I have an 03 CR134, with porting, head and power valve mod, air striker carb, rad valve, 07 air boot and air box vents, god knows what else. My son has my old 05 YZ125. With all the mods I did the CR motor is about on a par with the stock YZ, maybe a hair faster. The CR handles and turns quite a bit better. I can't compare the suspension because the 05YZ did not have the SSS stuff and the CR has B kit suspension.

I think the kicker is the 6 speed on the YZ but I would not trade my CR for his (my old) YZ.

I had an 05 with pretty much the same setup. I put 05 Showa CRF forks on it as well. I also have an 05 and 06 YZ's and have ridden the piss out of them all.

The CR134 is one of the best handling, most fun bikes I've ever ridden. Powerwise, it does not have the midrange of the YZ, but if you've ridden 125's as you came up thru the ranks, you'll be totally fine with that. It's a friggen buzz saw.

Handling, the 06YZ is significantly better than the 05. MUCH less fade when you get past 15-20 minutes. But that CR with the Showa forks is freaking awesome. Every rider that's been on it (that knows how to ride a 125) gets off with the biggest grin on their face!
my 05 with showa A kit front and rear. Has the blue kit back on it now.

I just got a 2007 cr125, its plenty fast just hoping of superminis and only weighing 110 pounds, I was thinking about getting a yz125 but the cr just had more of that "fun factor" just because they don't make them any more and I think the frames look more "big bike" style, if you don't car about power why wouldn't you get a cr?

I rode a 2000 cr 125 for 2 years and loved it besides the fact that it had absolutely no bottom end. I swear my 1996 cr 80 had more bottom than that thing. The chassis on my cr 125 I thought was pretty much perfect. I put a fmf fatty and a turbine core silencer on the 125 which helped a little but it was still kind of a turd. Ive only ridden a 2002 yz 125 but the motor on those bikes are good everywhere and pretty much bullet proof.

YZ, no question. The Honda is a turd as already pointed out upthread.

Look at it this way, even though the technology is abit dated, an 06 yz is relatively like buying a 2013 in the same shape.

pro circuit header/expansion chamber, what ever you call it, with a fmf shorty, boyesen reeds, me weighing 110 pounds the thing rips, I have 2013 kx100, bottom end is no where close, a 1998 cr80 having the same amount of bottom end is a joke

Is the 04' YZ a good bike? A buddy of mine has one that I could probably pick up for cheap to play around with. It's completely stock and probably has 10 hours on it. It's been collecting dust in the garage for years. I actually took it out a couple years back after cleaning up the carb and using fresh gas it fired right up. It runs great! Suspension is definitely a bit soft but I could easily respring it.

Funny you mentioned that. I just made the decision to move my son from his KX85 to a 125 and just skip over the superminis. He wanted the Honda also because it looked more "modern" than the Yamaha. Well, since we don't race and the Honda is a little shorter, I said what the heck. I found a 2002 in good shape and purchased it. So far he loves it. He says the power is pretty similar in delivery to his stock KX85, just more of it. The Honda is basically stock, but it does have a Pro Circuit pipe and silencer. Both are good bikes.

What year cr 125 u have? The 2000's where turds stock. I'm sure I'm not the only one that says so. The rm's were turds that year too.
Nm jus saw 2007. I'm pretty sure the bikes had a lot of changes over 7 years.

I recently bought my son a yz125. I can't remember the model for sure but it was either an '01 or '02. I got a great deal on it. The young guy selling it just wanted to get out of riding all together. He included a FLY carbon helmet, race clothing, boots, oil, etc., all for $1600.00

The bike has new plastic, new tires and everything looks and works great. The only thing we've done to the bike is thoroughly cleaned the carborator and change the oil and filter twice. He has logged roughly 10 hours on it. It fires on the first or second kick almost every time. He is riding the snot out of it and having the best time. The bike is perfect for his size. He weighs around 140 lbs. I'd say the fun factor is off the charts.

Everything is stock on it, but I plan to buy him a new pipe and silencer and reed in the future. I can't say enough good things about the bike. BTW, I personally prefer a steel frame. That was a factor, but certainly not the only reason I bought myself a '13 KTM 250xc-f. Another wonderful bike imo.

WOW this thread popped back up out of nowhere! So I ended up getting an 02 cr125. I looked at a bunch of JUNK and then out of nowhere Craigslist came through with a gem... literally. It is as tight as a brand new bike with thousands in aftermarket parts (wheels, triple clamps, braking rotors front and back, etc). The only downside is that it was a woods rider's bike and had a huuuuge FMF Q spark arrestor on it and the rear mount for the pipe was cracked. Replaced it with a Pro Circuit pipe / silencer. First ride I was very rusty (and a little scared) after a 6 year hiatus but I was happy with the bike but it still felt off - like it wanted to run but was choked up so I went after the power valve... Fabricated a larger stop to let the valve actually open and now it friggin rips! It had some head work and porting already and with some jetting, it runs REALLY well! Definitely not the turd I was expecting. Still may do the air striker carb and maybe even the 134 kit (just because) but I am actually happy with it.

Over the winter I am going to change a few things cosmetically but this is how I got it (minus the previous owner's numbers) and I modified the graphics that were ugly as shit. So far, I have a total of $1980 into it so I think i scored!

will hang with most things if you are on it Smile

So the last factory Honda CR125 built was 2002, the motor was basically turned into a built Yz125 motor. Allot of the parts were modified to be very similar to the Yz But the factory CR125 in 2002 put out over 42hp.

yes the chassi is better on the honda, but yz has better suspension and far superior engine. also its unchanged to 2021 so parts are plentiful

Perhaps this was mentioned before but the 2006 YZ 125 had a tranny issue. The shift lever that interfaced with the star gear got updated in 2007. Be sure to change this part if it has not been updated already. The tranny eats this bearing/bushing and then pits the transmission gear faces and it is costly to repair (speaking from experience). After transmission was fixed I put a 144cc kit on mine and it was a lot of fun. 197lbs dry weight, how can you go wrong? Damn it, I want another one!
