Steve Wise & Magoo Didn't Value DeCoster As Team Manager

Disclaimer, Steve Wise has much respect for Roger and they are close these days, but it wasn't always that way. If Danny was still with us, I'm sure he would have that respect and friendship with Roger too.

I have been a life long friend of Steve's and was recently on his Facebook Live weekly show, "Moto Fellowship." On the show this week Steve said something I never knew. He said that in 81 when Roger was the Honda Team Manager he didn't think Roger had anything to offer the riders and didn't pay attention to his input. Steve was 25 and in his words, "thought he knew everything!" He said Roger would ride with them at the test track and Steve would pass him with ease.

Steve also said that he talked to Magoo soon after he moved to Honda and Magoo told him the same thing.
He blamed it on being young and that he has matured over the years like many of us.

If you haven't listened to his Facebook Live show, "Moto Fellowship" check it out on Tuesday's at 7:30 Central Time. He usually has an interesting guest and they start out talking moto and the Steve always ends with a great message of hope.

A lot of Honda riders felt that way, but he was never the manager, Dave Arnold was.

Yeah well Roger was relatively new to managing teams back then and I'm sure he was learning what he needed to know and how to deal with people working for him for the first time. His track record has been pretty damn good since then.

I’m pretty sure all the pros can pass their coaches “with ease”. I think Steve is just pointing out the cocky attitude most had and teaching us another lesson about maturity and patience.

Kinda common knowledge Roger is clickish. Been more than a few riders who had icy times on his teams. Some even won championships yet were still disregarded.

Sounds like people are reading too much into this and Wise is just sharing an honest, personal story about the arrogance of youth.

Some of us can’t always look back and see when we’ve been too arrogant, it’s great that he can.

He was, and he was fast and smooth. Even in 82, he was still fast.

I know bad Brad would try to talk Roger into racing some vintage stuff but he always declined the offers, and there were many of them.
