Shoulder injury?

I had a racing misshap back in the end if August . I had some injuries that have been addressed at that time. I have gotten an mri on my shoulder. It turns out I have torn my supraspinatous tendon. I meet with a surgeon in two weeks. Has anyone not had a rotator cuff repaired? I was required to do pt before my insurance would do the mri. Pt has allowed me to feel good and return to the gym. I feel ok, not perfect. Just curious if I can survive without surgery.
If you have had surgery what can I expect as far as the recovery?

I always find a doctor I trust that comes with recommendations and follow their lead. They are the experts. Vital will give a million different answers.

I had to stop playing any sort of throwing sport due to torn rotator. But it doesn’t bother me to keep my arms below shoulder height. Some of my gym routines are modified because of my limited over head range of motion. I won’t get it fixed as I don’t care to play ball sports to that level again.

I think it’s up to you and a doctor at the end of the day.

Thank you! I feel I can live with it. Not sure of riding but believe I could. Just wish I could of had it looked at when all the other injuries where healing,

2010 Injured my right shoulder, little movement to the side & forward, physio said they would get me back to normal even with torn muscles. 6 weeks later MRI showed Torn superspinatous 90% & also infaspinatous 60%.
Surgery required plaster of Paris around waist & full arm in plaster with stick holding arm out 45 degrees forward out slightly out 3 weeks then a cushion & strap system. Long 8 months rehab due to wasted time getting MRI. It's good now.
Feb 2018 injured left shoulder but they were more concerned with L2 compression fracture 12 weeks with corset to stabilise fracture. Another 12 weeks later They said left shoulder wasn't too bad but I insisted on an ultra sound which showed superspinatous torn 50 % and I would be ok & how did I feel about their decision not to proceed with surgery.
My question to my consultant was if in the future I damage other muscles / tendons in same shoulder will this superspinatous still be able to be fixed having muscles shrinkage. Surgery was carried out 2 weeks later & this time only 2 months rehab.

It really depends on how much your superspinatous is torn & how much power you have already have back in the shoulder, lifting weights above head etc.
All the best with your decision

My right shoulder has some fraying in the rotator but haven't needed surgery. It will depend on how much pain you can take for how long. The thing right now is if you have restricted motion, you will end up with frozen shoulder which can be fixed with exercise but can add to your recovery time after surgery. Long story short, keep using your shoulder loose.

Mine is torn completely. Separated by 3cm. I can move it all directions. Behind my back is difficult but I can move it there just can’t push it away from my back in the physio test.

Have the surgery.

I dislocated my shoulder snowboarding, popped it back in within seconds of it happening. Fast forward 3 years, I dislocated it again and this time I tore my labrum and the head of the humerus was completely out for 7 hours while I waited at the ER. This was the first time I did it in dirt, and it has happened 3 more times since, as well as damaging my other shoulder trying not to fall on the already bad side. I've done all of them either in the snow, or in the dirt. Doctors say I have a lot of muscle mass in my shoulder area and it's hard to get it back in.

It wears on your confidence.
Can cause further injury not wanting to fall on the previously injured shoulder.
Certain movements hurt still to this day.
Injuries more often than not happen while doing silly, stupid, dumb stuff you'd never think you'd get hurt doing.

I was supposed to have surgery last March, but alas, COVID. I'm still waiting to have surgery, and I promised the wife I wouldn't ride Moto until I fix my shoulder lol... fml

10 years ago at age 53 I tore my rotator cuff and labrum pretty bad. I held off on surgery as long as I could. Finally it got to the point where they told me, if I didn't get it fixed it would get to the point where they couldn't fix it.

I did all the PT and exercises they gave me for home religiously.
3 months from my surgery I was released to go back to normal life, riding and the gym as well. I have 100% movement and no pain.
Eventually you'll need to get it fixed. But that's up to you and your doctor. Good luck!

What kind of recovery time for your surgeries if you don’t mind me asking. I own a business that I do need to use my arms in. I missed a month after the accident from more serious injuries. I broke 6 vertebrae in my neck, fractured one rib, fractured jaw, minor brain bleed, and a compressed artery in my neck . Not sure my employees will enjoy me missing work.

Be patient. At 50 you should know...time flies. GET IT FIXED. Before you know it you will be back.

Your body is a well engineered structure. What happens when you take out a key component - LOAD SHIFTS ELSEWHERE...and you then tear something else. GET IT FIXED.

When you are in rehab...and doing exercises to rehab...get one of these goofy looking things.

They are designed to isolate key muscles and tendons in your shoulder for injuries just like yours.

Get the surgery, work your ass off in rehab, and do ALL the exercises they give you for home. About 3 months you'll be good to go if all goes well. Torn rotator cuffs don't heal without surgery, unless it's a very minor tear.

I only missed about 4 days work. I'm in sales so I was able to drive and get around to see my accounts.
It's only a sling. I'm an avid runner, so not doing any cardio was killing me. After a couple weeks I would go to the gym and hit the eliptical pretty hard with my sling on since it's no impact. After about 3 weeks I asked Ortho Surgeon if I could run with my sling. He said yes but be careful and snug it up good. I know it had to look goofy, but it worked out. lol

I have that desire also. I have done stair master with a leg cast, cardio bike with an external fixator on my leg and spent many hours in a gym on crutches. I just feel good at the moment and I am scared to go in reverse again.

I know a lot of guys that have had the surgery. Since they are firemen the bar for them to recover enough to be released back to full (arduous) duty is 6 to 9 months.
You really need to see a physical terrorist for advice. The guys I know that had shoulders done did PT before the surgery. The more strength you have before any ortho surgery helps with recovery.

I have been doing pt for seven weeks and the gym. Push-ups have returned I can do 3 sets of 30. Pull-ups Friday was 3 sets of 9, half what I was before but still a good amount. Bench much lower than before but do 205 ten times. So progress is happening. Hope it would help recovery ?

Right shoulder, total recovery time 8 months, able to use it to a good degree after 5 months
Left shoulder 3 months recovery, good use and mobility after 2 months.
You seem to have good movement & strength so recovery time should be reduced

My tip: get it fixed. waited 3 years, and after surgery I went back to work too soon, not respecting the limitations set by the doctor. He said I had waited too long in the first place. Now I have reduced shoulder movement, and adapted weird ways of compensating for pain, and dislocations, so I get bad muscle knots on my back and neck strain which gives me headaches. I think we should be a little more humble as to the injuries we sustain at times, and listen to professionals Silly

If you can bench 205 ten times and do 27 pull-ups and felt good enough to return to the gym after PT and PLUS you are still making progress then give one good reason why you would need surgery. People with shoulder injuries severe enough requiring surgery would be lucky to get a 45 lb bar over their head. Not all rotator cuff tears require surgery. AVOID if you can!

That’s how I feel. Maybe the surgeon can change my mind. I don’t think I can race anymore if it doesn’t get fixed. I have no real memories from the accident but I have dreams. One I had originally but now seems possible is my shoulder ripped on the jump. Once I landed I couldn’t slow down and missed a corner and rode through a property fence. Makes more sense than forgetting to turn. Maybe I am done even if it does get fixed?

Exactly. When my rotator was torn I couldn't lift hardly anything above my head, let alone heavy weights.

UPDATE

I did ended up getting my shoulder repaired. I had it repaired 10 days ago. The MRI actually looked different than what the doctor found. The bone did not have the tendon ripped away, the tendon was ripped in half itself away from the joint. So it was a little different than a normal rotator cuff repair. Mush quicker surgery. So far I feel good not much pain, not what they had warned me about at least. Hopefully things stay that way. I do have PT twice a week which is them moving my shoulder for me. I do also get to do arm curls for now. Their plan is to make me wear the sling till 3.31.

Work has been ok, I can paint with my left hand and do most stuff some how. I do need help on some things. I own a body shop,

I had surgeries for both my shoulders...the right from baseball and the left from lifting weights. I thought the right shoulder would heal with a partial tear in the supraspinatous but it never did. Even after two surgeries (the first Ortho totally messed up), it was better and I could throw again but still had tears in the muscle. In October, I went to Colombia to have stem cells in my knees and shoulders. So far I would so that they have definitley lived up to my expectations.

Good luck with the rehab. My brother just had RC surgery on 3 out of 4 tendons and is facing a long recovery. Shoulders suck.
