MX is a family sport, but more importantly, it is a friendly sport. We can get competitive on the track and we argue in here, but when push comes to shove, we help out our fellow racers. It's no surprise to me that complete strangers have helped me out through the years when in need, so I always go out of my way to do the same. Here are some of the things I've been helped with over the years:

-Larry Lemire gave me a Moto-4 visor when I broke mine back in the day.
-Matt Condon's dad helped me fix a flat in the pits between motos.
-Complete strangers have swept my gate or lent me tools at the races.
-Dave Hassell probably literally kept me alive with water on a day when I forgot my cooler.

There are too many to list. Share some of the times when you were blessed with help.

I decided I was gonna ride my Africa Twin to the top of a mountain on a 4x4 trail with some Jeep buddies until I decided to try and make it up through a boulder field 12,000 ft. Dropped the bike twice and bent a front brake rotor. I turned around and began to limp my bike down the mountain. About 100 yards from the trailhead I get a pinch flat in my front tire. Three dudes on KTMs stopped and helped me lift the bike on to a boulder, pulled the front and helped me patch my tube. If it hadn't been for them I have no idea how I would have made it home that day.

Three front flats later I decided it wasn't actually like "a big dirtbike" and bought my SXF.

I was at a Mid-Ohio vintage race a few years ago. Did well in my first moto, so I was psyched for the second. Hotter than hell, and a long day. As I was getting ready for the 2nd moto, I realized my front tire was flat. No time for a tire change, so I tried putting air in it, but no go. Out of nowhere, a guy pitting next to us walks up and says, "use my front wheel." He was riding the same brand/year as mine, but different displacement. The wheels were identical, so he helped me pull mine, put his on, and I got to the gate just in time. I've had similar experiences, but this was probably the one that really sticks in my mind. I always try to remember that day if I see a fellow rider/racer who needs a hand.

I copied and pasted this from a post i wrote from last year.

The guy is an inspiration. Same goes for Carston, Earl and all the guys still grinding. I was racing Reddick one year and borrowed the inlaws rv. It was having issues in the pits and wouldn't run. I was looking for some wire tie for my grips and asked a few pits next to me and headed to the office. I came back and Earl May had wired my grips and some guy was under my RVs hood working on it and fixed it. Itv was Barry Carsten. I had never met them before but they went out of their way to help a fellow racer. I will never forget that. Huge fans of all these guys.

Rodney Smith helped me get a small rock out of my fork seals with a tear off and replace my oily brake pads, supplied by him, at club moto, back around 2003, on my RM125.

Al Posey drove my to a race and I pitted out of his box van, even though I was an average C class rider.

Iron Mustangs MID 80's Michigan, Brian Swinks Dad was camped next to me. I broke a clutch perch. I had one but it did not fit the bolt diameter. it was too small. Mr Swink said ' I'll drill it out and make it fit". I said "Will it break since the body is so small?' .... "No, you'll be fine" first lap it cracked through the small remainder of the perch. He seen me pull in to my camp with the Clutch lever hanging down to the axel. We both turned away to ignore one another. few races into the season we both had a laugh about it.

RIP Brian Swink

1989ish Vital's own dirtbikemike offered me his KX500 to race when my 125 grenaded in practice, and for some reason I accepted. I didn't get to practice on the beast, so the 1st moto gate drop was my first time to ever ride a 500. Awesomely terrifying.

Sounds like Barry! When I was a 14yr old 80cc kid, Barry did private lessons and we scheduled a few. During one session, my YZ80 seized. Barry used his leg (his boot on my swingarm) to push my bike (and I) back to the truck while he rode his own. And he knows a thing or two about RV's. : )

At a Loretta's qualifier when I was still riding an 85 I blew out the rear wheel on Friday practice, Dude next to me had a spare and let us use it and said he would leave us his address to ship it back to him. Woke up Saturday AM to find another spare rear with a fresh tire and two spare front wheels with a note saying "Don't worry about it, My son doesn't wanna race anymore." and he was gone. Never got his name or anything, but I did give those wheels to a close friend who was in need of them 2 years later. Moto is full of really good people.

The Stoke is STRONG in here.

From LL’s to Baja to Mammoth...

I’m amazed at the level of camaraderie that I see and experience with all of you.

It’s a pretty cool thing that we all share.

Never go to a track without a couple of BR9ES plugs in the toolbox. Probably given out a dozen or more easily. Always get a shocked look when I offer. Had to rejet one kids bike... I think his dad was a little jealous untill I started to explain how easy it is to do and what to look for. 😂

Last weekend, forgot my tire pump. Scanned around the pits, heard this dude bitching about his bike (brand new KTM 350), look over and happened to see a tire pump in the back of his truck. So I walk over and asked to barrow the pump, he said sure. I just grabbed my wheel and headed back over (was swapping to a scoop). He had got his pressure gauge out which was nice.

Pumped up the tire, checked the pressure and it read 10psi, checked with my hands and it felt more than 10psi. Thanked the dude, walked back to check with my nice motion pro gauge, it wasn't 10psi, but it was 10psi high!

Walked back over and explained to him that his bike problems could be from running 23psi in the tires, he was like "holy shit" Laughing We got each other straight for the day, love that stuff.

I wanted to race the first race at my local track Seminole but had not rode in a year after an injury but decided to race anyway because I wanted a trophy. lol In practice a guy whiskey throttled a jump and his bike launched a berm across the track and ghost rides into me crushing my radiator. I was thinking I was done when up and coming pro Oscar Diaz and his amazing father came running up with a new radiator they had in their truck and helped put it on quickly. I didn't really know them except some days at Seminole 10 of us would have the whole facility to ourselves so we rode together a lot but I had been gone awhile but they would not take one penny for it. It was a fun day even though I blew 4 massive leads on the last laps with 3 beautiful holeshots and a 9th to first charge. After not riding so long I could not hold on or even reach for the clutch on the last laps and choked but was so fun and I ended up with a 3rd place trophy so mission accomplished.
Oscar and his dad and my boy Jeremy Shuttleworth were cheering me on making huge gap gestures with their arms in the air but I blew the leads and we all had a good laugh afterwards. Oscar and his family were so kind and he was an amazing talent. Unfortunately he was invited to a money race in Nicaragua and after winning his vehicle was followed and machine gunned down by thieves wanting his winnings.
Such a tragic loss to our moto community. We lost a great person and no doubt he would of went to the big leagues of moto with his skill and support. Just the thought of how kind and loving the family are brings tears. RIP legend.

When I was a teenager living in Carson, there was a cop who always gave me a hard time. I’d start my bike and guess who’s patrol car was slowly rolling by. He would just look at me shaking his head.
Couple years later my grandmother passed and, my grandfather and I moved to Harbor City. There was a super small man made track next to abandoned Navy housing. It was right across the street from us.
You weren’t supposed to ride there but, a lot of people would sneak in there, do a few laps and disappear.
It had a couple of decent jumps, a few berms and, a table top. Well, I seized my motor at the bottom of this place one day and, was struggling to push it up the hill to get out of there. The heat didn’t help either.
Out of nowhere a guy on a KX 250 rolls up and, offers to help me push it up the hill. We finally get to the top, I I tell him thank you. Well, he takes his helmet off. It was that cop. He just smiled at me, walked back to his bike, did a lap and was gone.
I couldn’t believe it.

Factory for 5-minutes- ....Racing at Spring Creek in the +30 class and it starts to rain and rain and rain. I do not have tear offs because the was no rain in the forecast. My tear offs are in Kansas City.. I am wearing SPY and Bevo is going down the line calculating who is wearing what brands and such. He is done....walks over to me and says, " Where are you tear-offs ....?"

I told him "Kansas City"... he reaches into his butt bag and hands me Fresh Scout Goggles with tear offs.

Man I felt factory for 5-minutes....Thanks BEVO !
