I don't even think it would be safer and I think it would be way worse racing. Terrible idea this is motocross, this is how it's done, leave it alone. That had nothing to do with the start. Jmart made a bad decision and Amart crashed. It happens.

No triple crowns were fine. That's not changing how we race that was changing the race program.

Perhaps You need to spend more time watching classic movies (animal house) and less time coming up with solutions for problems that either don't exist or probably would only be made worse by your "change"

More track time, more starts...increases risk of injuries

Too busy to be watching movies, either plowing snow or riding

Another weekend, another post by someone who has clearly never raced before about how to make the racing better...

I watch racing. I just don't spend alot of time watching TV. I've got plenty of other things that keep me occupied. Mostly family and work...

I understand some of the disadvantages, but would anyone disagree that it might be safer? Even if it's by half a wheel, it would give those who are fastest (say in the heat race) the ability to stay out of harms way 'more' after the start? Opinions?

We talk about headsets, but large organizations like F1 and Nascar also have staggered start positions too...
Did you stop to think that maybe car racing has staggered starting grids only because it was inconvenient to line 20 cars up side by side?

Car racing is a trillion dollar industry. But yeah I guess they could just never figure that out.

You're probably right. Car racing folks are just smarter than all us dumb dirt bike folks (except you, I mean).

Things would be much safer if they could just all agree that some of them should hang back on the start and let others through the first turn first. Once it's safe to go, the ones in the back can proceed in a safe, orderly fashion. It's all this "racing' that keeps causing accidents.

A Split start gate like they have done in the past in Vegas may be an answer.

This would break up the bottleneck at first turn (because now there are two "first turns") and allow for separation of the pack before the lanes converge thus making it safer IMO. Definitely more challenging for track designers because of the space constraints but possible.

Maybe someone could post an old Vegas Track Map to illustrate what I mean.

Staggered starting gates where the slowest guy goes first.

Just an idea...first lap must be wheels on the ground. No jumping until hitting the finish line jump.

Again, multi time world champion and one of the most successful drivers of all time versus his team mate who isn’t even hounding him in the same (maybe some different “settings) car.

Hamilton costs them a fortune and gets them results, can’t say I blame them if they have to pick one or the other favouring the guy they pay most for and is most famous.

Still don’t think it’s all about the car though.

Anyway, this is a motocross/supercross section. If they stagger the start the back markers just become lapped quicker.

This isn't NASCAR or F1 this is SX/MX where everyone is on the same gate. Go find another sport if that too scary for you.

Changing the start is blasphemous. Metal launch pads takes the nostalgia and art of gate prep Out of the equation. That’s change enough. Nothing more.

Leave the start alone. Stagger starting is maniacle and stupid.

This is a hell of a lot better idea than staggered starting gate.

I’m just picturing Roczen and Webb side by side down the back of the take off of the supercross triple and 70ft. of roost shooting in the air! As they are WIDE OPEN to the top of the next jump only to absolutely lock up the binders as they come over the top followed by more HUGE roost sprays. 🤣

It’d be exciting that’s for sure.

*Before I get flamed, I’m cool with MX/SX starts just how they are, I just laughed when I pictured this. If anything they should ban holeshot devices and take away the grates again, those 2 things would create a lot more separation.

Why not in SX ? rythme lanes or jumps after the start are very dangerous. These guys put their life on the track so why increase de risk of blow up their nucles or back ? It seems the goal is make the sport safer right ?

Staggered starts would be fine if the slowest get to go first so they might not get lapped and we can watch some racing as all the fast boys come through the pack. Kinda like a weight handicap in horse racing. And to stop sand baggers in the heats and qualifying give points to the heat wins and fastest qualifying. It’s like the 80’s when they tried 2 start rows slowest in front.
