My ol buddy Zap mentioned me when I gave my pint of beer to Bengt Aberg on the Carlsbad Fwy when his bike broke down and he rolled over to us. The crowd went wild!
My pop owned a liquor store in downtown LA back in the day. Each yr we would bring kegs of beer to the event. This one yr we had FIVE KEGS OF HEINEKEIN!
Two for the night before and three for the race turned out to be the perfect combo... Three Dark and two Amber, I remember it like it was yesterday. One of the crew got so drunk he almost rolled onto the track, we yanked him back quickly before he got ran over.... lol
I'll never forget carting the kegs up the uphill in the morning, we had throngs of people wanting to join our pahtay....lol

I like your style!
I have many Carlsbad memories....first time I raced there was December of 87 on my 79 450 Wheelsmith Maico. A buddy of mine and I set up for the REM race and I didn't have directions to the track but had an idea where it was. Got down to Palomar exit and asked for directions....got them and the old guy said "good luck today!" I hadn't raced in a few years and it was cool he said that...you had to be there.
Could never get over how the uphill could be so muddy in practice but like pavement in the PM.
Only time I would do well there was on the rare times it was tacky. One hard packed day (there were so many) I got home and had done pretty well for a change on my 88 CR500 Honda....told my girlfriend I passed a lot of people late in the second moto...she said "great...how many of those people were on the ground?" :-)
i met so many racers over the years
first race the 100cc class on a green streak..CMC,were the classes were packed
2 100 classes..6 125 classes,4 or 5 250 classes and a couple 500 classes
i was in a couple pile ups in my first moto ever..was following a guy on a 100 cc bultaco..came around the the top of the hill for the big ski jump and the guy rolled the jump,i just missed landing on his head and crashed trying to miss him..not bad for the first moto of my life

Yeah, it was known as the fastest growing sport in the US. My HS had a team after I graduated in 72..... I was pissed.
There were over 800 riders and I had to park not too far past the gate house. It was two motos by then though.....ran into an old Ohio buddy of mine at that race, Bob Sullivan, and we did a lot of racing together after that and still go to the pro races together.
That's what I'm talking about!
That’s some fast company you and Bobby were competing with Bauer.
Pit Row
The tracks will claim 3-400 riders but most everyone is riding at least 2 classes and they are still not getting in more than 20 min. of track time.
My parents and I went a few times in the 70's and 80's.
Fortunate enough to be there when Marty won.
I still have all the programs from the races, one with BobbyM listed in there too...
Both of my parents are gone now, but good memories from the races...
A couple of years ago my wife and I took the kids to Legoland which is pretty close by..
here are pics from my hike down to the track and what was left....
I grabbed a ziplock bag of dirt with me and brought back just because...
2 100 classes
5 or 6 125 classes
4 or 5 250 classes
2 500 classes
each with 25 to 30 riders from jr. to int. to expert
i hated practice on my 100 cc..i couldn't even hardly make it around the track,it was so muddy ..i saw more bikes and riders at carlsbad then anything in my life
it was real popular with every make and model of bikes...sachs,greeves,penton,monark,zundapp,ossa,bultaco,montesa,hodaka,maico,bsa,CZ,and of course the big 4
Its my first try on the new and improved Vital Vid page, its 23min long, so i figure its better going directly to the vid page, rather than embedding.
When I went to LL’s back in 2004 I could not believe the amount of $$ and the humongous rigs were there for amateurs.
Also the tracks while not prepped as good weren’t as DEADLY with do-or-die jumps. Some of the stuff local Novices/Intermediates do is insane!
Today the sport is MUCH MORE cutthroat imo and some people are racing for the wrong reasons and are completely clueless.
Thx for posting that Scottie, I will have to check it later....
I never heard of this place before, How good could it have been if it's not there anymore?
...and what is a "CMC" anyway?
Better check the history books regarding Carlsbad... or look it up on You Tube.
And don't let Sondra hear you say "What is CMC anyway"
Her family help create the So Cal motocross racing world in the 70's and 80's with CMC. Some of the worlds best riders raced with CMC... Hannah, Ward, Johnson, Glover, and McGrath are a few.
