Seems like a lot of GNCC folks live in Greenville, but I like moto also...
any GOOD mx tracks close by? I love sand...
Shoals has about 7 tracks and MotoVated has 5 I think.
There are others in the area. Gtr is about an our south.
ClubMx is in Chesterfield, SC
as far as riding goes there isn't much for trails in the upstate, just tracks. tracks here in the upstate are typically some form of red clay. But farther down in the lower part of the state starting around Columbia are sand.
The race scene really isn't that great for mx. Everyone just wants to practice and not race (mainly due to seat time and local mx is expensive and a pita imo) but woods racing is booming. So most people around here who like to race will practice moto and race woods. Half of the mid east hare scrambles are within an hour of my house and aonia pass is a little under 2 hours from me and they have quite a few hare scrambles there.
Weather is typically good, I don't mind the mud and I ride year round, I've only had to throw on some latex gloves because of it being cold once so far. and thankfully the shoals has the equipment to scrape the track if its muddy.
So imo if riding is a high priority for you and you want to be pretty centrally located Anderson, piedmont, Powdersville, Pelzer, and Williamston are less than an hour from at least 4-5 tracks.
Pit Row
At last count we have 18 operational tracks in this state. From Chapin I have 8 tracks within 1.5 hours, 4-5 under an hour. Year round riding at most of those, but of course in the winter you bundle up, coldest months are usually 30s AM and 40s or low 50s PM. Practice fees are $20-30 depending on where you go.
As BH said, the race scene is fragmented in this state. Lots of little series doing their own thing. But if you want bigger races the Ultra and Mega series also hit this state from time to time, or you can road trip to those rounds. I actually just put out a feeler on the SC Motocross facebook page about trying to make a very limited (4-5 race) vet tour that would overlay on existing series. Something that people could hit, see different tracks, and have fun without committing to a 12 races series or race the same track over and over. I will say the +40 scene here (for racing) isn't huge. It seems like most of the guys that stick with it are pretty serious, not as many casual racers C/D vets as I saw in Washington. But lots of them come out to practices, that's why I was thinking about that kind of series.
I am originally from Virginia, so this feels very much like home to me. Different pace of life here than out West, but I like it. We also very much enjoy Lake Murray, that's what actually drew us here, but the moto has been pretty freaking great. Check out my Youtube if you like (it is under my name), I've got a playlist for SC MX tracks, I'm hoping to get to most of them this season.
Some cons - you won't make as much money here, but again, expenses are lower too. The winters aren't freezing but they also aren't California. Summers are hot and humid for sure, that's when you go to the lake! And speaking of Florida, it's accessible for winter road trips so that is nice. I got to race Daytona Vintage SX last year, so that was cool. Hope this helps!!
I am retired so I wont be looking for any career type job.
The city of Greenville had been rebuilt and has a number of cool restaurants on and around the river. They have also converted the old railroad tracks into a bike trail that runs through several cities. Employers in the area include BMW, Michelin and a lot of tech companies.
