Picked up an rm125 2004. In an ironic twist of fate this is my 3rd 04 rm125 ive owned over the years. Dont ask why, it just happened that way.

Its a little hammered, missing a few pieces, and dirt caked everywhere

The plan is to simply get it ready to just ride by replacing worn or damaged parts, fresh fluids etc. at this point if the parts works and functions its staying as im on a limited budget. if everything pans out ill do a full tilt built next year

first thing i did was toss the 1-1/8 bars and their adapters. this top clamp is solid so i didnt want extra junk on it and until i swap the clamp out im running 7/8 bars

tear down was the subframe and air box. the air box is just caked in dirt and oil. ill have this cleaned out nicely

silencer is...well...in need of attention. was missing about a 1/3 of the packing and what is there is soaked in oil and the mount was worn.

new packing is on the way and will have a shop weld on some new material

and picked this up off of ebay for a steal

not too many bolts needed special attention. the rear brake cyclinder ones are hex key and they seem soft. ive always rounded these out. will replace with a more standard bolt.

the only thing holding the gas tank on was the retention strap but the bike is coming down

JB weld is not a cure all. both pipe on the right side were cracked and "repaired"

i ordered a set of used ones that were straight. Ill save these to send off for repair and bracing later on

And its all apart
ipt>

im always suprised at what parts are missing, or worn, damaged or simply not attended to.

on this bike i am suprised none of the bearings so far are dry and actually have grease and only a handful of bolts have been seized.

Now that its all torn down, the first step back is to get the frame sanded and repainted

Got the frame wire wheeled and painted. Decided on yellow

Also swapped the rear spring for a heavier one and finished repacking the silencer

Update

Ive gotten to a few other areas of the bike. I installed new brake pads and rotor up front and rebuild the master cylinder.

I installed a new Guts seat cover and seat foam

cleaned up the jetting, I leaned out to what PC recommended P: 40 M: 360 N:stock 2nd clip

For triple clamps, i needed to swap out the whole set to run oversize bars but I wanted to avoid dropping a lot on aftermarket clamps. Fortunately parts from other models in the same year range fit. I installed clamps from an 2006 Rmz450 without any issues aside from questionable clearance with the stops.

Swapped out the stock seat for an sdg. Its the cheapest option for a complete seat but i wanted to try a seat with a taller profile. The taller height is better (im 5'10 so the bike is a little cramped) but its profile doesnt lend to getting forward though i tend to sit back on the bike anyways

I also installed some fastway pegs. Theyre kind of like legos in that they come in pieces. Building them only took a few minutes to apply the locktite and insert the pins. These are also notable for being able to be lowered which is how i installed them. These are also much wider than my stock pegs (though compared to newer bike this isnt much of a selling point.) To change the height you will need a vice to press the barrel in and out**

At the track I rode the first half of the day with the Fastways (lowered)
Overall they sit close to an inch lower and to the rear
The lower setting suited my legs better as i could grip the seat with my knees. Sitting was more comfortable and I felt more at ease in the rider triangle and the wider platform was noticed. The biggest issue i ran into was catching my toes in the deep ruts. I mustve caught them about 3-4 times, once going through a quick straight away (with ruts) that picked my foot up and one that really scared, caught my toes and pulled then down around the peg. After that i really tried to think of my foot position and had to focus on riding on the balls instead of my arches

For the sencond half of the day i rode with the stock pegs. First thing I noticed was my knees sitting higher, I felt a little cramped back on the bike. Once i was riding around when I was standing I did notice standing higher up on the bike, with this feeling I wasnt as worried hitting tall ruts as much or leaning the bike over on jumps

The Fastways are better than stock for their sheer size vs stock. As for the lower setting, Im not 100% on board with it yet but I have bad form and only put a little bit of time on them

Throwback Thursday with all the rm125s ive had.

This one is my sponsorship application photo on am 03 rm125

These two were on an 04 rm125 during a summer series. I thought racing a 125 against a field of 250fs in the novice class when i was a top 5 guy would be fun...it wasnt fun being buried off each start

I picked this 04 rm125 up in 2011. This one i regret selling as it was just before the two stroke craze really came back. I picked this up for $1000. It had been an amatuer race bike for a local kid so the engine was built well.

Got out for some racing finally. Tracks was one of the sand tracks in Norcal at MMX. not the best place to be when your a big guy on a 125.

I used to kill it on starts all the time but today i was behind the whole way. It didnt matter much as by about lap 3 arm pump was bad enough i had to back it off to parade lap speeds haha. I at least had fun just pegging the throttle through the deep sand berms, but i would've loved to be fighting up front where i used to be but age and time away has diminished my skill. Goal is to at least 4 races this year to start.

Bike still needs some attention, sorting out the suspension settings, testing different parts, possibly warped clutch plates, and other small items

Test report

Pirelli Scorpion MX32 Extra X

80/100-21-100/90-19

Ok, im picky most likely like everyone else here about tires. Im also on a budget which means not picking top level Dunlops or other models.

I've ridden every brand at one point, Dunlop 756s, Bridgestone m404's, Michelins Starcross, Maxxis and even Shinko's
so i feel i have a good pallet for tires.

I really like having my tires predictable and obviously have good traction which is what these have given. Other budget tires like Maxxis or Dunlop 952's I always felt lacked performance necessary for use outside recreational/OHV park riding. So far on Sand and Intermediate clay these have been solid especially when a pair is $130 on Amazon

I bought a very sweet 07 RM250 which had Fastway pegs on it in the lowered position. At first I couldn't figure out why I had so much problem with the shifter position. I moved them back to the more stock position. At 5'8" can't say that I care for them in either position, the width bothers me too. Have looked for a set a stock pegs a number of times since or even the KTM pegs that are close to being the same.

Stop me if you ever heard of a suzuki with clutch problems.

Last race bike seemed down on some.power and when I did starts it was grabby/jumpy whatever. Finally opened it up to find flakes in the oil and it was silvery.

Plates didnt look too bad coming out, some obvious wear until I found this guy
I'd your wondering, if cracked and then shredded the missing pieces which explains the flakes

All in all two innermost fiber plates cracked and the basket has some notching which is no surprise

I had the same clutch plate issues with an 01 RM 250. The 2 inner most fibers would break like yours did. I ended up taking one of the fibers in to work with me (I worked at a motorcycle shop) and matched it up with a fiber plate from a ZX12 street bike. The ZX plate was the same size, but was sooo much better. I swapped the last 3 fibers for the ZX plates and the clutch worked incredibly well. If you have friends at a local shop, see if you can take one of your good fibers up there and match it up with a plate that may have more grooves or better cork material. We sponsored a very fast local amateur the same time I worked there and they used to run CR fibers in a YZ250F. Said the clutch felt better and lasted longer with the CR stuff. Might be something to consider, just figured I would share my similar experiences with you.

I had that happen on a rm125, the broken plate nearly cut right through the hinson inner hub! You can't get them anymore.

ProX sell a oem inner hub and pressure place and they are inexpensive... i ran wiseco basket and replace the proxX hub often

The RM's are known to eat clutch plates when the basket starts to wear. The best thing I've found is the Barnett clutch basket. The SS tab covers stop wear and help the plates last longer. Pro X plates are a great option. also.

I think 04 was the most interesting year for 125,s. The 1st year everyone made a 250f. And 125,s are supposed to compete with them, I thought it was crazy at the time. I ended up with a 04 cr125, I was getting a 06 rm125. I looked the cr over and left with it, 3k out the door. I,m on my 2nd one now, 1st one was stolen.

I had a clutch do the same thing. Inner hub was worn out as well. Went with the prox replacement as well.

On my 250 RM I used OEM pressure plate and inner hub since Hinson's were tough to find. I had them hard anodized and that more than doubles their lifespan.
