Resting Heart rate?

I know it’s universally debunked, but I’m curious to know how the HRMAX calculation of 220 minus your age works out for you?

Yes, I’ve read all about how this is innaccurate, but honestly, it works out bang on for me! I’m 40 yes old, I cannot push beyond 180bpm. (Road cycling)
And yes I remember hitting 182-184 just a few years ago too.

So I’ve began to ask as many people as I can how the 220 minus your age works out for them.

Is that with a chest strap.

Watches are notoriously inaccurate for heart rate monitoring.

Also something i learnt from a trainer is each exercise is heart rate specific and your max HR on a bicycle is different to running and rowing and vice versa.

Strap, I have done a few tests to see if it's correct and it is.

Is that on moto?

Compare it with your max on a few different things and you'll be surprised at how different can be for different exercises.

I’m 48 and my cardio is lacking right now after working away on a film for 3 months. Just got back to gym this week.
I’m around 52 to 55bpm resting average but drop lower than that sleeping. My HR alarm is set for 180bmp.

I use a garmin set-up when I am at the track. Resting I have seen mid 30's. Max the last couple years was 199. After my corona average max dropped about 5. 180-185 is a great moto range for me but that got shaved with the virus too. Normally I am in the 50's but as soon as I throw a leg over the bike it jumps to 120. I am 53.

Anybody that tells you covid does not damage you is FOS. FYI I had it for 2 months.

Damn I'm feeling way out of shape in here. My low over the last 4 weeks is 65. Average resting over the same period is 73. Working on cardio again after being lazy through the covid crap.

I'm surprised how many are in the 40-50 range. I always thought that was too low. I'm 51 and mine is in the low 60s resting (using my Polar watch). On the bike I get up to around 170 max. Was out mountain biking yesterday and was between 140 and 160 most of my 9 mile ride.

I was around 40-41 when I was racing. Now I'm 56 and not in shape and it's 72.

I actually take medicine because my blood pressure is too low. Without it, my heart rate will dip into the high 20s (asleep).

With the medicine high 30s, low 40s. Its pretty funny to watch nurses at a hospital freak out as their machines go off when I get it measured.

I race mountain bikes, and am a pretend dirt bike racer, too.

I’m in excellent shape and my resting heart rate is around 75bpm. I’ve had a high heart rate since I was young. When I run, I can run all day if I keep my heart rate at 175 while my friends will pass out if they go that high for a sustained amount of time.

As many have pointed out, it is very specific to individuals. I have been an endurance athlete for basically my entire life. My resting is usually mid 50s, and one of the main ways I can tell if my body is tired or if I am getting sick. Max on the bike is 196 and I will sustain 185+ for whole motos. Running above 170 for me wont last more than a couple mins(sprinting) I'm 48 and my max HR has been essentially the same since at least 2009 when I started wearing a HR monitor with chest strap. WIth out a chest strap, you are guessing. The new HR monitors are getting much better but the lag time is still significant compared to a strap and miss chunks of time especially if the HR spikes are in bursts.

I bet if I dropped alcohol-caffeine-cigars from my routine I could get it under 50.

Everyone is different and unless something really strange happens it shouldn’t change much from 20-60. It will go up over time as your heart becomes less efficient or not as strong as it once was but barring health issues and with moderate activity and paying attention we all should live long productive lives. Get to it.

There’s got to be some selection bias here. Lardasses like me are far less likely to report than in shape people with stellar stats.

I’d love to see what everyone’s training routine is that gets them close to a Moto heart rate. I’ve tried a lot of different stuff, and there’s not much that will give me the same amount of max HR that I get during a Moto.

Last year I started running up and down local dunes with a 25-40lb weight vest. i would add more weight Every couple weeks to help keep my HR higher as I adapted. It’s really helped with core and leg strength as well with the limited time I have to train.

I had planned to get a rower or Erg this winter, but last I looked, equipment was priced ridiculous and hard to find because of the rona.

Lard asses like myself don’t even know what they’re resting heart rates are. So Definitly some selection bias lol

running doesn't do it for me either. Mountain biking does.

Polar strap, rest around 45-48, max at 200, 33 years old. I cycle a lot, lots of HIIT, lots of moto. When I do a 35 minute moto, I am at 175-185 the whole time.

With the meds for the low pressure do you feel more energetic and the opposite when not on it?

I’m 57 and in a good shape as reported by my very recent riding license medical exam. 10 days ago I measured as low as 41 while resting and the next day a peak of 177 on the Polar H7 strap during a moto. Adding my age to the max heart rate gives a 234, but the generic 225 reference is just a simple average representation

I'm 29 and is usually inbetween 40-50 resting HR, usually just test after I've sit still for 15min or so. Don't ride anymore so only cardio I do is 40min run 2-3 times a week after the gym.

My daytime resting HR is around 45 BPM and I'm 52. I've been some form of endurance athlete since I quit racing Moto at age 19. Back in the early days of Polar HRM, I would wear a chest strap at night to record my HR and I would routinely be sleeping at 30-35 BPM when I looked at the data. I have not looked at sleep HR data in 20 years at least though.

In terms of max, the highest I've ever seen is 201 but that was at the end of a 4-hour bicycle race and I was likely dehydrated. During training I would normally see 185 back then on the bike. On XC skate skis I could put it into the mid 190s, that is just because of the higher amount of muscle recruitment compared to the bicycle. As I've aged my max has come down a bit, now around 178-180.

TBH, I hardly ever use the HR strap anymore. Almost all of the training I do on the bike is done by perceived exertion. No HRM, no power meter. I spent way too many years being a slave to data....

I’m going to wear my watch tonight and see. I worked out twice today and pushed pretty hard so I’m sure it will be a little high but I’ve never worn it to bed so this will be the closest I’ve been to knowing what it actually is.

I put it on a couple times today while sitting still, and it was around 70. Kind of disgustingly high compared to most on here!!
