The flywheel and end of the crankshaft are designed with a locking taper fit, meaning there is a slight interference fit at nominal. As the nut is tightened onto the rod threads, it pushes the flywheel into final position.
The woodruff key is used to help improve the concentricity of the flywheel in relation to the center of the rod. Power is transmitted from the rod to the flywheel via the locking taper joint, not the key.
The only time you can really get away with not running the woodruff way is on low RPM applications where concentricity isn’t a major concern.
What’s even more cringe worthy is his recommendation to just get it “good and tight”. Increasing the nut torque over the manufacturers spec will only lead to stress on the threads on the nut and rod end, which could possibly cause them to fail. And if it does fail, it’s going to be catastrophic.
This is basic shit in the mechanical engineering world and it’s very concerning to hear such wrong advice coming from supposedly on the of the best engine builders in the business.
I'd called about small claims court. Lawyers are expensive. 100-400$ an hour depending or more.
And what is the point of these build videos if not giving the consumers inspiration and ideas for their own builds? There is definitely some amount of responsibility for a publication in my opinion.
But this is a bit off-topic. I'll drop it now.
Motofinne is right. I now question advertisers in those mags. Doubtful I'd use many of them.
I contacted both mags that ran articles explaining everything. No replies. That seems to be very common of the people in the industry I've contacted for help. Or they say they'll "See what they can do." Never to be heard from again.
It just goes on and on.
As for those that defend him. How about you get him to do his job, since you all feel he's the best. We may never know as we don't have our motors back.
Pit Row
Again waaaaaay too many good motor guys to be waiting for this guy. When you realize it’s just a engine for a old dirt bike. In the grand scheme of things in life it seems pretty ridiculous. Like only Varner can build a fast two stroke. GTHOH!
Ghost
Give it a few more months and maybe he won’t have any new work coming in so he can finish all that back up work In between rebuilding his own and buddies Racing engines for every week. What a clown.
