Never tried one, after my time. But my first thought was the same as the gopro cam. If I am tried, hot, or what ever and just want to slide my goggle's strap off, wouldn't the strap kinda catch? Dunno

2. A break away fin is not going cause you any grief in a crash. In order for your head to be rotated in such a way that your neck is jarred, a shear force would need to be applied to the outer shell of the helmet. This same shear force would instantly break away a helmet fin that’s not rigidly mounted, so I’d be perfectly comfortable putting one on. And, just as added security, a 3D printed one can easily be made to have an almost hollow center, so it would buckle under an impact.

Edit: mattyhamz2 actually has the first one I’ve printed that was a test model, but an updated design is on the way since the Moto 9s have a really oddly shaped section in the back.
Let us know when you get one worked out, have a Moto 9 here that needs some 00’s funk on it!

I loved these back in the day and used to run the M2R helmets with the big fins, but I’m just not digging the new style fin on the modern day helmets. Looks good on some, but looks out fo place on most imo

Agreed. The Moto-Fins look killer on the Moto-9's, almost look like something that would come on them. But then you see one on a Shoei (what I run) and they look somewhat weird which is why I've been holding off. Hoping to see if some more styles of fins come out. Something a little more rounded like what they used to be or like the old sixsixone fins would look good. IMO the 661 helmets with the fin (right before they got out of moto and into mtb I believe) were the best looking helmets ever, along with the old M2Rs Pastrana used to run.




On a side note I got lucky about 5-6 years ago and found one of these (same thing but fake CF, not real) on clearance for $5 or around there. Wont find a helmet round enough to put it on, but damn its cool!

Glad this thread got bumped, looks like I forgot to update once the design for the Moto 9 was done.Pinch

After going through a few iterations I decided to start using a flexible material to allow the fin to bend out of the way during a crash rather than break off. As you can see by the photo, it’s printed hollow with only a thin outer wall so it’s very flexible. Each fin also comes with 3M double sided tape for easy mounting.

Have you guys ever thought to make something not so pointy?? Old fins had a cool flare to them and they weren’t just triangles.

Yes Mark 👍 we have actually rounded the tops of the fins so they are not so sharp and edge we have better pictures on our Instagram @factoryfins. We spend alot of time with each helmet fin design so that each fin fits and the fins flow with the design of the helmet shells themselves. Most modern helmets are not so rounded. For example the Fox V3 its quite edged and has lots of straight lines so it would look strange to have a round fin like the fins from the 90s 00s ect on it. We're always looking for ideas and feedback so if you have any more suggestions feel free to contact us through our social media. Thanks

I was going to say the same thing, most modern helmets have very sharp, pronounced lines so a curved fin would look extremely odd. That said, there's actually quite a bit of complex geometry when it comes to making them fit the helmet correctly as shown in the images below, they are definitely not "just triangles".

You guys have a very impressive selection for a lot of different helmets, major props to you because that's a pretty big undertaking to get all those designs just right. It took me a while just to get the moto 9 fitment correct, and at that point I just never really got around to designing for the other lids as I focused on other parts.

Yeah these new ones are ugly but the older ones from late 90s and early 2000s looked way better. Just like all the gear and graphics.

I had a chrome one. Never used it. May still have it, but I feel like I may have of disposed of it. All I know is it makes you a King or a GOAT. Guess I should have used it.

Hey thanks dude appreciate it. We've put so many hours into designing them, some were a little easier than others but we're happy with how they turned out. You've got some pretty cool stuff as well cool to see it on some of the pros bikes 👍.
