Will Dungey Be Able To Run #5

If Dungey comes back for sx this year will he be able to run his number 5 or will he have to change it because he’s been out of the sport for a while now?

As long as this years champs don’t take it I don’t see why they wouldn’t let Dungey run the 5

I guess we’ll have to wait and see if he does come back, and if anyone chooses 5, and maybe if the AMA lets him use it again.
Also, my opinion of people expecting someone to “ kiss the ring “ when it comes to using a number should just get over that.

It's a number not an identity. He's had a few as I recall. Pretty sure he'd be fine with something other than 5.

Is it as simple as him getting his license? Then as a past champion the rule about choosing a career number applies? Or do even past champs need points from the previous year?

Technically you need to score 25pts. in order to be eligible to keep your career number for the following year unless you're out with injury.

That said James Stewart managed to keep the 7 by sending a letter stating he was coming back.

I think they'll bend the rules for him to keep the 5.

If that happens and Ferrandis wins the 250 national title, he'll have to keep the 14 or pick the only single digit that would be left which would be 8. He could also pick a different 2 digit number.

I personally would like to see the 8 back out there.

When I think of McGrath, I think of him clearing an SX triple with a #1 on his bike.

#2 will always be RV to me.

Just to be relevant to the thread....I don’t care about permanent numbers much either but if Dunge does come back, I hope it’s with the #5 on there. Whatever number though, it’d be sweet!!

Um I dont think you know how the number system works. There's very few people in the world who would be eligible for number 5.

Yeah I do. Which is exactly why I started my statement with "My opinion" which means I understand by the rule he isn't necessarily eligible. But "My opinion" is since he's a multi time champ I think they should allow him to run it if none of the current eligible riders take it.

Cannot be bothered disagreeing with you, rest assured I do know the number system. You need to win titles and earn "X" amount of points for a single digit even Alessi needs to meet criteria for his 800 and Hanson cannot keep his 100 (Yes he does not race for a long time) because 100 onwards is for visiting Euro's and then all of the other restrictions that the AMA wants to enforce.
