It's been a long time since I've ridden a 250f. The last time I rode one was a 2011 kx250f and I had an 07 rm250 at the time. I couldn't believe how easy it was to go fast and cut a good laptime on the 250f. But it wasn't as fun or lively as my rm which is what has kept me on 2 strokes still. 250f's have come a long way since then too.

I currently have an 18 yz250 and race the 250 class which is mostly young guns on 250f's and the over 35 class which is mainly guys on 450's. Different parts of the track suit the different bikes better but at least in the 250 class I know I have one of the fastest bikes on the gate with only reeds, a pipe and good jetting.
I've also ridden 450's and while they are fast, they just don't have the fun factor for me that my yz has

If lap times and race results are your main concern I'd stick with the 250f, you'll most likely cut the same lap times as the 2 stroke and do it more consistently. If you wanna feel like you really worked for your result or just have fun go with the 2 stroke
What you wrote is exactly what I was thinking it would be like.

The YZ250 2T is a decent platform. It’s not a great bike, but it does the 3 main topics mediocre on which bikes are judged. It’s in the middle of the spectrum when it comes to the engine, handling & turning.
Also I don’t understand when people say a 250 2T has a violent hit.
At 6’1” / 225 lbs. I can man handle the ones owned or ridden through the yrs..
IDK maybe the average rider is of smaller stature & size ?

I say go for it on buying a 250 2T. If you don’t like it you can always sell it. That’s what I’ve done when buying a bike.
I’ve always kept a 250 2T in the stable in the past 3 + decades since they’re a blast to ride.

You’re a grownup, buy the damn bike. Nothing like the rawness of a 250 2 stroke. Lightening in a bottle. Why not have a 4 and 2 stroke? Any bike gets stale, it’s nice to switch them up.

I raced about a month ago on my 2T 250 and noticed that in a lot of corners the four-strokes cut really tight lines. If you can't bomb the outside because it's muddy or something, you find yourself stuck in tight four-stroke lines in some places.
The main reason I ride two-stroke is financial. I can fix it myself for a lot cheaper than a 250F. I know too many people that had to do $3k rebuilds on their 250F.
I really want a fuel-injected two-stroke, which limits me to Euro brands.

This! This is why I will never own enough bikes.

I really want a 300tpi and FC350 to add to the stable. But I love my TC250 and can’t wait to ride my RM

I wanted a te300i then the wife got the 250i and I love it enough power n torque for me love my TC250 but alway want something different so sold it last week and wanted the FC350 could not find one the stumbled on a rockstar 450. It’s my first ever 4t and in corners rolling of the gas I was getting flung forward needed some practice.

Spent all day between my TC125 and FC450 and would say lap times where almost identical as that’s as fast as my balls will let me go Smile fun factor was amazing on both....

You can never have enough dirt bikes...

Yesterday I rode a mates 2018 rmz250 with yoshi system back to back with my yz250.

Out of corners and down straights the yz pulls a lot harder, it makes the rmz feel like a 125. However, the track was rough with a lot of square edge bumps straight out of the corners. My yz would skip around on them where the rmz just drove straight across them. Going through ruts the rmz just carved them and I could snap the throttle and it would surge forward where the yz would snap and lift the front wheel unless I carefully rolled the power on.

I didn't time the laps but from the seat of my pants I feel there was nothing in it between laptimes after I got used to the rmz. Being that I race in vet class I think I would get killed on the starts on the rmz against mostly 450's but other brands with more power may do better.

It just reinforced my previous comment, its a lot easier to be consistent on the 4 stroke but it is a bit dull to ride

Hard to compare. The 250 2-stroke is a lot stronger then a 250f. I read some comments saying its similar in power to a fourstroke but I disagree. Maybe try one first, it could be a rude awakening coming off a 250f

The yz is hard to hard. The power is way to aggressive. Gone back to a cr250 the power is more four stroke like and doesn’t wear you out from hanging onto it all the time

I race vet b and thats how i feel. Sometimes the power of the yz helps me but other times its a bit squirrely. This is my 6th yz 250 so ive tried to perfect my throttle control but im no rc or reed. Lol

Congrats, you're gonna have a lot of fun on it. Check out the jetting thread for the Mikuni if you want to tinker with it. Doesn't really need anything else.

Rode 2 strokes for years (KTM 250’s and 300’s) before switching to a YZ250FX. Absolutely HATED the 4 stroke initially but after years of suffering through atrocious KTM suspension I decided the KYB stuff was so good I had to give it a chance. 4 FX’s later i still think it’s the best all around bike(s) I’ve ever owned. Switching to the 4T was initially hard but now I can jump back and forth easily. I spent 10 months on a YZ250X but just never liked it for playriding- great race bike though- but decided I liked the 4T more and got back on an FX.
