I’m sure this question has been answered already but I was reading MXA and what do they do with all those legit tires??? Give them to the goggle/gear/man friends, use in practice bikes, give to privateers, or could a guy post covid rules get a bunch of them?? Curious mind, as that is a lot of money being thrown out if they just trash them...

Hand them out in the pits sometimes.

I’m friends with a pretty high up XC2 rider and when he rode for Maxxis I was able to get his take offs all the time, now Dunlop sponsors the team he’s on and they won’t let him give them away no matter what. Still have a stack of Maxxis’ from him though and I’ve really grown to like their tires, They stay grippy forever!

Makes me long for the good 'ole days. 20 years ago if your timing was good, some of the factory mechanics would just let you have them. I've ended up with some pretty cool tires over the years. I once had a factory prototype D737 rear on one of my RM's that came off the #1 bike.

Dunlop cuts a lot of them in half so they can't be used, especially the special compounds that some of the factory teams use. They say its a liability issue. Also some of the softer compounds wouldn't last as long as the tires they sell and they don't want people trashing the brand because the tires didn't last as long as consumer tires would.

Pirelli doesn't do that though. I've found enough Pirelli take offs to last me a few seasons. So far this year I got 2 fronts and 2 rears from A2, score!

Most of the tires will be redistributed as practice tires if they arent blown out.

I ended up with Mike Craig's rear sprocket one time after the Dallas Supercross.

The thing was used for only one race and was practically brand new.

Blackfoot racing kept and returned all their spec race tires to Michelin. Lots of privateer teams/riders sell their takeoffs at the racetrack. You can usually find a pile of takeoffs for sale in the pits.

Yup.... it's a liability issue.
