Bar clamp blunder

Ended up blowing out some threads on one of the holes for the bar clamp. Tried chasing the threads, bolt still threads in /out but I don’t trust it with even minimal torque applied. I don’t want to drill/retap to a larger size, but will a heli coil be an appropriate fix before having to swap out the whole top clamp? Haven’t stripped threads in years so I’m pretty disappointed in myself 😂

I would trust a Timesert over a Helicoil in a situation like that.

Sometimes the inch size equivalent will be slightly larger, allowing more thread without drilling and tapping.
Maybe get a 5/16 tap and see if that will cut more thread material, and just run one 5/16 bolt until you get new clamps.

On a non stressed bolt I think a heli-coil is OK but Slipdog nailed it.

I’ve never had to install a heli-coil before, id have my buddy do it at his shop. But I’ve read that M6 holes don’t need to be drilled for a coil, is that correct? I figured you’d drill it to M8 for the m6 insert?

Crf110 lol. Big problem for a little bike. I appreciate it though!

Isn't there 3 other bolts holding down the bar? I'd helicoil it, put that bolt in first, then torque down the other ones.

Ditto, Timesert. Might as well wrap tin foil around the bolt threads, if you’re using a helicoil.

A properly installed heli coil will be stronger than the original threads.

For what it is, a helicoil will work. We use helicoils on molds to fasten aluminum billets to the plates. Billet blocks could be as big as 120” x 72” x 12” thick or more. Theyre plenty strong.

Are you guys serious not trusting heli-coils? If done properly they are every bit as strong as the factory threads.

I've seen numerous head bolts use a heli-coil on some big HP V8's with no issues.
