Yeah, it's an entitlement thing. "Give my kid/nephew what he wants or you are an asshole!" Training the next generation to be the next Veruca Salt...… (And NOT the kickass band either)

I've always tried to teach my kids that autographs are meaningless. For the most part I think they all have gotten it. The first National that I took my oldest son to at Washougal was fun because he would actually wait in some of the lines for the little posters that the riders were given out and when the rider would ask if he wanted it signed, he'd say "No thank you" and walk to the next spot. He just wanted the posters for his wall.

We ended up at the pits for Larry Ward and he was just sitting in a lawn chair up against the trailer. I had instructions from a friend's wife to tell him hello because they had grown up together near Snohomish/Monroe. It was hilarious because as we were talking Larry sort of grabbed my son by the shoulders and turned him around and signed the back of his shirt up near the shoulder, almost out of habit. My son had this really weird look on his face like "What the heck just happened?"

I wish I had a video of it.

The one autograph that I know that my son did get was on a snowboard by a guy who used to own a board/skate shop here. It was one of Joey's "signature" boards by Lib Tech I believe. But that isn't something with monetary value, it was just more of a sentimental thing because Joey had basically helped him with his riding for so many years and it's a very sentimental item fro somoene that he knew very well.
Well, Larry Ward wouldn’t sign my cast! So I’m entitled to fake anger!

He did go on to dice it out with Jimmy Button in the second moto, right up to the checkers, which I considered a personal tribute to me and my broken wrist. The End.

One would think this happens a lot (get asked to sign fake stuff). Why not offer to sign the kids shirt, SX program or whatever and make a fan for life instead of taking the douche route

I'm happy with lots of things you post - I will just never understand your fixation on talking down to your customers. Never.
Just like I'll never understand your fixation with trying to get me to change my behavior.

Would have been cool if Reed said, I won’t sign that, but I’ll swap you one of my current number plates and sign it.

I think people are missing the point that Reed is not trying being a dick, but actually try to PROTECT his fans from buying something phony that he endorsed.

The memorabilia biz for these guys is messed up, Feld taking their cut and not allowing them to sell their own stuff at events. Looking at it like, “the guy is only trying to make $200, what’s the big deal, he’s made millions” is wrong. Don’t think anyone here would let someone else profit from YOUR hard work. Like, would it be cool if someone else got a promotion at your job off of the things you have done/accomplished?

In my opinion, and that's all it is, Reed could have simply said "I can't sign that, sorry. But let me tell you why"... That's it. Explain the position to keep a rejected fan from spinning it. Here is why I can't or won't....

Heck, he may have even done that and we just don't know it.

It is a big deal if he had a no compete in his contract. Think what he has to feel like saying no to kids just to protect himself. X amount per race multiplied times how many races saying no.

Signing something for a fan doesn't necessarily mean "I endorse the product that used to sponsor me 5 minutes ago"

Comes down to the individual contract. I don’t know what’s written up pertaining to his contract. I do know a no compete in it means no compete.

I’m not sticking up for him. Even myself as a plumbing contractor, I have a no compete with the company I’m currently working for. There’s a lot of things I cannot do or even wear.
I agree, it sucks for the kids especially.

Chad Reed refused to sign a team Yamaha Reed 22 backpack when I was 13yo at 2004 Houston SX. My dad bought me the backpack I picked it at the event. I was a huge fan of his until then. I asked him why he said one signature per person cause he already signed a poster and handed it to me. I got pissed crunched the poster and threw it in his face while cussing him out as loud as i could haha.

Oh and we took the backpack back to the booth and told the vendor what happened, he hooked me up with all the Carmichael shit, and Ricky signed it all 🤙

I have an authentic Reed Jersey. He didn’t seem to have a problem signing that.
Some people really struggle to see the difference between Authentic & Replica..
He wouldn’t an sign authentic one at Tampa.

Couple things....

They weren’t at the truck, so not like anyone could “grab a real one” and sign for the OP

I spoke to the guy the OP was referring to this morning, that he said he spoke to, he said Chad noticed something was off on the plate the OP presented, he asked the guy I spoke to, they looked at it and he asked the OP, “where did this come from” and the OP said the website in question, one allegedly KNOWN for turning out “replica” plates.

The OP was explained as to why it won’t be signed, and was then asked if they had anything else that he could sign, that he’d sign most anything, but not the replica plate, the OP said “no”

So, in closing
They weren’t in a position to just grab another or something else
The OP was told why, and what the problem was
The OP told the team the plate came from the website in question, one known by the team for this issue
The OP was given the opportunity to have anything else signed, to which the OP declined

Case closed

As much as I am not a fan of corporal punishment, if I had a 13yo who did what you claim he still would have a difficult time sitting down. Hopefully your father spanked your ass, but it sounds like he was an enabler and got his little brat another piece of memorabilia to make his little brat shut the hell up...…

One can only hope that you've changed a bit since then.

Even before you posted this it seemed clear to me.

It's nothing like when we sent my buddy's kid down to get Jose Canseco's autograph after batting practice on a poster the kid had in his room (he was the kid's hero) and the dick hole said "$10.00". Kid came back crying.
