I had one of those. Handling and suspension were pretty good,but it was absolutely the slowest 125 . I had an old 76 Yamaha MX125 that I kept(still have it) that would flat out motor the Kawi all the way through the power range. The '81 KX125 was a bit better in the motor department, basically the same bike.

Yep, one of the slowest 125's of all time. I knew a fast guy that installed an RM125 engine in his 1980 KX125 because it was impossible to make it fast enough for a Pro.

Thanks FTE. Personally, my buddy had a '74 KX125 that blew up too many times to count, I didn't want a Kawi at all until that '84; sweetest 125 to this day remember racing.

In 1980 Billy Liles won a lot of races on one of those and also on a KX420 one of the worst open bikes ever sold to the public.

I'd also like to have a CZ 125, and that's another bike slow as molasses.

A friend was a team Green rider that year and he won the district 7 #1 plate on his but as I recall they bored the carb and did a lot of cutting/reshaping on the pipe but it all was on a team green bulletin.

If you can get ahold of SND on here his dad might remember what all they were doing to them.

I saw think Ryan Bast ride a 125 CZ and his was quite fast in the Expert class a few years back at a Sand Hill Vintage. The bike just didn't make noise and go nowhere..Smile .
And it was against the Jap bikes(no KXs) too.

No problem Larry. Its funny how some things affect your life. That 1980, 260 pound, KX420 convinced me that I should concentrate my efforts on medical school. Liles doing well on that beast was a remarkable testament to his skills.

I still laugh every time I think of the day Bill Handly and I asked Mr. Liles what pilot and needle they were using in their 420, his response was " hell I don't know he only uses the main jet".

Billy spoke at our regional awards banquet this year for SEVMX, he still turns some laps at the occasional vintage race.goes damn good too ! Still a good ole down home boy , always wiling to spin some tales from his racing days , a lot of fun to hang with and bs about back in the day.

BTW tha'ts a nice job on the 125, even if they were slow and broke in half a lot!
