In case you weren't aware, real estate in Ontario right now is absolutely insane. So as a 26 year old newlywed couple we had to get creative. the result is pretty cool.
The story here is that I bought a 3 acre lot with a condemned house on it. Tore it down, fought the government for 11 months to get permits and moved a house onto the property. I got the house for free, all I had to pay for was moving it up the road, pricey, but cheaper than building. By the time its done it will be worth over double what I have into it. I'll have 3 acres to play with and built a little track on, and I can walk to work.
The house was too big to be moved in one piece, so it was cut in half and trucked to the new lot

after that, it was rolled into place and jacked up to the sky
now that the house is in place and up in the air, construction on the basement and the add-ons, a mud room and a garage can begin
That last picture was taken this morning. I'll post more in this thread as it goes on. I've never seen a house built this way so its pretty cool watching it go up. The house will come down about a foot and a half from where it is now. THere are 8 more courses of block to go on before that. The high water table forced us to build it a lot higher up than originally planned. A huge part of the property will be made into a hill with fill.
How is it you will walk to work from your 3 acre estate? You work in forestry? lol

He was an electrician working on a church and found out they were tearing down the old rectory, a nice two story house. he traded his time for the house and had it moved 3 miles to a nice city.
I have 8 mm movies somewhere I will try to get a photo of the move.
I also have the bill from the city power company to move lines to make way for the move.

How does one go about finding a free house! Well done.
How will the joint in the floor joists be supported? I couldn't tell from the foundation pics.
We also started on the interior, took out the wall between the kitchen and living room and ripped apart the shower today to re-tile it. Gotta grab some materials in the morning to turn the old laundry room into a walk-in closet for the wife. Really happy with the progress so far!
Calling for an average -4°C for most of next week. Way too early for that kind of weather.
When are you guys planning on moving in?
