2004 Yamaha YZ125

Edited Date/Time 12/23/2019 3:12pm
Time for the next build! Hopefully I will remember to take a lot of photos this time.
Just picked up this bike from my neighbor who bought it new and only his wife rode it. Guessing less than 50 hours on the bike. runs great! Plastics are faded, some cracked. Pipe is rusty, needs tires, grips, lever. Stock bars on it are straight! seat cover is in great shape. Only paid…. TREE FIDDY!!!
For real. $350.

That is awesome!! Clutch cover makes it look like the bike has had very low hours...

04 yz's are where its at! Have fun with the build. I'll be tuned in.

Here are my plans for the build. Feedback is appreciated.

KKE Wheels (Ebay) Read lots of good reviews
Bud’s Pipe and Carbon Fiber Silencer
Restyle plastics
stock ’17 graphics
Attack Graphics Seat Cover
UFO Frame Guards
Powder coat Clutch cover and Triple Clamps
Dye Ignition cover black

Other stuff is just maintenance. Fork seals, countershaft seal, carb rebuild, etc. Will I see a huge difference with V-Force reeds? Considering that as well

V-Force reeds are awesome, I have them on my '05 yz125 that I am currently building and I definitely would recommend them.

Lots of good threads in here to pull from. Have fun with that thing, it looks clean! Maybe look into the new Dubya Edge wheel sets. Still cheap but I'd expect much better quality than KKE.

Great find!

My pick would be:
oem style graphics with oem style plastic
Cerakote instead from powdercoat

Keep her going!

I would go with a Boyesen Rad Valve instead of the V-Force. I never could feel a difference with the V-force.

I just did one of these builds last year. Here's a photo for inspiration. I personally liked the newer plastics rather than the restyled kits.

Also look on ebay for some SSS forks. You can find them everywhere now for a reasonable price.

I agree with Agent on the Dubya Edge wheelset, and they'll hold value over KKE. Another vote for the Boyesen Rad Valve as mentioned by MxSkater. The Boyesen RV was the single best bolt on mod we did for the 04.

Nice! Ive been trying to score this yz125 for tree fiddy…. No title, no carb many missing parts and the engine is a basket case claiming it only needs a top end… yea right, the cases are 75%split already. Did I mention NO TITLE? Dude wants 700 as is and wouldn't accept my offer of 350 (those are 2005 forks btw) anyway he thinks he can rebuild it and sell it for a profit in california hahahaaha!! I mentioned the no title issue and how he's lucky to break even after the rebuild he. Claims he can rebuild it AND get a title for it AND still make money 💰.lmao!! Aint no way and the only reason is take it w/o a title is bec I can rebuild it and run 🏃 it as a track only bike.

Finally got some time to order a few parts and start disassembly. I took some pictures of normal high wear areas so you can see how clean it is.

I've decided to take the build slow for now. Doing stuff that HAS to be done. Bling parts and stuff will come slowly later.

Started Disassembly

Wear on each side of the frame and clutch cover

Pipe is a little dented and rusted. Going to strip the paint and give it a works pipe look until I get the Bill's Pipe

One little spot of scraped paint and rust on the bottom of the frame

Original Chain Guide and Slider

Straight as can be Radiators

Cylinder looks perfect. Original cross hatching. Might have less hours than I think

Not a spot of rust on the bearings

Had some good weather last weekend so I threw the bike back together for a quick ride. Ran AMAZING with the Lectron. Restyle kit showed up Monday along with graphics. Love the new look!

The 96-04 steel framed YZs were considered the top runners of their time. The 02-04s are considered the best of the last years but the earlier 98-00 had more punch. I'm bring back to life a 02 that has a 97 top end, bills pipe, vforce and blueprinted. Should be a lot of fun when done.

The 04 125 just felt different than the 05... (steel frame I'm sure)both were set-up about the same, but I remember it was easier to lay the bike in a rut and it held it's line better, whether it was a tight or sweeping turn it didn't matter, the 05 was great also, but the 04...you just had to be there I guess, lol.

Sweet find. I love the steel frames from those years. I’ve got a 2003 that I built and is a ton of fun to ride
