Thoughts on New Ray toy dirt bikes

My son is turning 1 in a month, and I'd like to get him a toy dirt bike for either his birthday or Christmas, or even for when he is a little older. I was at Walmart and Target months ago and think I only saw one toy mx related and it was bike, with a trailer and a truck.

When I was a kid I could get the Hot Wheels at Walmart at any time. I came across the New Ray toys that you see at the races, though I have read quite a bit of reviews of them being cheap. Anyone with bikes that can give their opinion? I am probably looking at a 1:12 scale size bike.

My kids have some, they’re cheap toys. Pastrana has somehow been riding without handlebars for months, but it’s Pastrana so I’m not surprised. lol I’d be more worried about a 1yr old chewing on it and possibly gnawing off a grip or number plate and choking.

This site has so much cool shit(more than MX bikes too).

They’re okay. Your 1 year old will destroy it. There isn’t anything as good as the old hot wheels, unfortunately. Even the generic Nitro Circus bikes are becoming hard to find at Walmart.

so they dont hold up so well? Pretty sure my mom has like 5-10 of the Hot Wheels ones my brothers and I had as kids if they aren't worth it.

The Hot Wheels one's I had are all pretty well together with the exception of a Nathan Ramsey replica that the front fender constantly falls off....crazy I still remember than 20 years later.

A 1:12 scale moto bike for a 1 year old? Who are you trying to kid 219, that's for you.

I'd say don't do it. He'll be chewing the bits and pieces off of it and choking on them. Or poisoning himself with the paint and coatings.

Go to wally world and look for a big honking plastic job that is not very detailed and true to life. Less things to break off and go down the wrong pipe.

Or maybe something like this

Save the replica bikes for a couple years off. Or just be honest and buy it for yourself.

It really depends on the kid playing with it. I have one kid who is meticulous about his toys and another that thrashes everything. But I really think any kid less than 4yrs old or so and they probably won’t last very long.

My son is 5 and i'm fairly certain i could buy a real Roczen replica bike for as many toy bikes that i have bought my son. If we get 2 weeks out of one it's had a good service life. My son is definitely hard on them, but the build quality isn't top notch.

My kids have broken a lot of bikes. The 1/6 size bikes seem to hold up a lot better than the smaller ones. The handlebars, footpegs, and front fenders usually break. Steering stems snap all the time.

I feel like those toys are better served to just sit on a shelf for decoration. They arent really built as a good play toy for a child, from what i have seen.

The kids (18 months & 4 years old) both have a 1/6 scale.
*Both headtubes have broken. Easy fix with the right glue.
*Pegs break easy..both of them have 1 broke off. Gotta use an epoxy to fix. Don't bother with superglue.
*Once, fixed....really solid. Kids are not real rough, but they get good use.

They also have a some of the smaller sizes.
*Worth the price if you shop around online.
*Will usually withstand being stepped on in the middle of the night.

Overall we are pretty happy with them. I really wish they made a YZ2 stroke in the 1/6 size though....

I really want to get it for him. Maybe i need to slow down til he is 4 or 5, but i want it for him.

If im buying myself a toy, its not going to be 1:12 scale, Its going to be a 125 or ebike.

Thanks for all the feedback, maybe i will stick with the old hot wheels when he starts playing with toys more than eating them, then consider a 1:6 scale down the road.

There's another brand called Automaxx that makes motocross toys. Attention to detail on their bikes are way better than in the NewRay's. At the end of the day, unless they are made of iron your little kid will destroy them... For a collection point of view, Automaxx's are better but sadly the don't make as many rider replicas as NewRay.

I was the same way with my first, trying to rush them to grow up because there were so many exciting things I wanted to share with them but they weren’t old enough, but now I’m wishing they would slow down. You blink and they’re off to Kindergarten. So for some unrelated advice, just relax and don’t rush it. Cherish each little stage they’re in, because it won’t last long and you can’t get that time back.

Yes, my 1st. I guess in hindsight 1 is way too young for a dirt bike toy. I personally haven't bought him any toys yet, meanwhile my wife has bought a bunch of yard sale toys so I wanted to get him something dirt bike related. Probably be better around 5+.

I don't want to rush him into anything, so I hope I don't end up doing so. I'm sure he will at least like riding, whether he wants to race or not doesn't matter. I will support him with whatever hobbies he wants to pursue. I'd love for him to pursue some sort of professional career with a sport, as I think my biggest regret is not pursuing athletics/racing more seriously, but if he wants to be a businesses man, politician, or fire fighter I will still do my best to help him achieve that.

I've spent $100+ on these things.

These things are definitely not made well enough for any average child of any age to play with. They make more money when customers come back to replace them, so why use better materials and then have to charge more?

That might be a bit young for the New Ray toys, they are pretty brittle plastic and break easily. They do look pretty cool displayed on a shelf though haha. Ive bought a bunch to give to my nieces and nephews and they do not last very long.

Found 2 of my favorites as a kid. The 1 is Ernesto Fonseca. Had 5 that were completely still in tact, these 2, a McGrath, Dv12, and Tallon Vohland PC 22, thought for sure it was Mike Brown, but i guess I remembered incorrectly.

Had a few others that were missing some pieces like front number plate, front fender, front end lol.

BTW, my dad always said Honda made the best bikes, but not a single Honda toy is still completely together.Tongue

You can get the New Ray 1:12 scale bikes for around $9.00. I have a 3 year old and he gets about 2 weeks out of them. Those bad boys get "ghost rides" off the coffee table and across the room on a regular basis. Bars break, wheels break, etc. I knew that going in. Now that he is getting older they are well taken care of for the first 3 to 5 days......then destruction ensues. Ill fork out $300 for toy dirt bikes before a tablet any day of the week.

Google Automaxx dirt bike, click shopping. The first 7 out of 8 I see list them as being on eBay, all KTM's though.

All the KTM and Husky toys are available in any KTM dealer and at least in the MXGP races, they all are available too
