How hard can it be? Figure if I can change a tire that repacking the muffler should be easy.

Get the good packing like silent sport or similar that is like yarn. Dunno what muffler you have but do know the Yosh repack kit comes with the quality stuff and bands/rivets. The steel rivets are gnarly. I bought same size in aluminum.

I'd change tires all day over getting pissed off and itchy repacking a muffler. They never come apart easy, get bent up in the process, then don't go back together good either after being hit repeatedly with the dead blow.

It's not hard at all. Go for it. Caveat...if the muffler is old and never been repacked, it might be a pain to get it apart. But please make every effort to get it done. Loud bikes with blown packing are super annoying.

it's a major pain in the ass. Things are just kind of mashed together so the difficult part is pulling the canister off of the inner core. I actually bent mine to shit the last time i did it so take your time!

This right here. Save yourself the trouble and just buy a new silencer. There are plenty of new or slightly used OEM takeoffs available on Craigslist if you want to stay stock.

It's not the degree of difficulty in question, just the results. Anyone can drill out the rivets, remove the old packing and put it back together, it's just a nasty job that rarely (in my experience) produces a good result.

"Dead blow" Yeah that's gonna cause a problem. Laughing

Use a rubber mallet as you pull it apart. Tapping it really helps. Nevertheless, from reading some of the comments, I guess I've been lucky. But I do mine annually when I grease the swingarm and steering stem. Maybe taking it apart regularly helps?

I hate maintenance as much as the next guy but I've never thought of re-packing a muffler as a labor intensive or technically challenging task.

OEM or aftermarket? 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

I just made a video for Yoshimura that should be coming out soon. They said that using the correct grams of packing dramatically changes the performance. With the race teams testing they found removing as little as 150 grams(1/4 pound) can reduce the power of the bikes.

My yosh systems on my Honda I bought the repacking kit comes with the packing, rivets, and new stickers. The rivets that come with the yosh stuff are no joke I broke two rivet guns, so I was heading down south anyways I stopped by there shop and they took my system in back and got them all dialed in for me super nice ppl.

Serious question: Why would a 350 with only 25 hours need a repacking? Truly curious. I run my 450's for ~200 hours and packing is still good.

Depends how hot and how you ride the bike. I’ve heard OEM stuff sound like crap after 25 hours. But also seen some look like new after 50.

Could be the difference with use plug caps during washing or if you pressure wash and it makes it way into the packing.

Makes my hair stand up thinking about re-packing mufflers (I get itchy just thinking about it), but yes, way better than a tyre change.

I lay out the new packing beside the bike. In the morning the re-packing elves have done their magic.

My old YZ 250F with Big Gun exhaust lasts about 4 hours. I use FMF 4t packing. When I open it up...there's nothing there...a few black ashes. I'm pretty handy at it by now. Having Allen head screws instead of rivets doesn't hurt.
