At first I was thinking "Keefer-esque", but I'm on board. Kick ass Derek!

Rup, thanks for the post. You've got to be one of the best posters on this site. Another good one.

I’m 56 and a fit 185. But I was never fast, and I never will be fast. I get passed by kids on 65s on occasion (Those bastards!). I hope he has a blast, qualifies, and finishes. I’d never even think of trying - props to him. If you ain’t trying, you might as well stop living.

Not a hater, just said I'd discourage him -- at his age -- from trying to qualify for this race, and I stated why. He's probably not nearly as fast and he could end up hurting himself or others. I get that it's a cool, feel good story and all, but if it was some 280 pound young guy who wasn't near the speed of the others, you all would be saying he doesn't belong out there. I can respect that he's moto to the core and is fast for his age, and was a fast pro in the 80s, but there are times to be realistic.
So you are saying that if you were cruising thru the pits at Iron,an and saw this dude geared up standing next to his bike about to head to the gate you would approached him to talk him out of it???

The answer is NO, No you wouldn’t

Don’t discourage him from doing something you can’t

How come every single thread has to have haters, naysayers or arguments?

No matter the topic it always has to slide sideways.
I just did a little porting on this one.

I raced with Derek back in the day in the pro class and have raced him in the Vet class a few times in recent years. He destroyed my ankle when he slammed me at the '81 Lake Whitney 250 AMA National in the qualifier. We talked afterwards and he was laughing the whole time! He was so fast and smooth.

Like a lot of us he has slowed his pace from the speed he was during his pro days. He was a top 10-20 AMA pro in the late 70's early 80's. Its amazing that he scoots around on that 125 they way he does. He is still very smooth. He managed to qualify for the Over 50 class at Loretta's this year on his 450 (I think), but finished outside the top 30. One thing for sure is, he had a great time, something he has always been good at!!! And no matter what place he is in at Ironman, you know he will be having fun!

I liked his comment, something like "had a little bad luck at LL, well not bad luck, ya see I don't train ....."

That was funny

Alright, I just got off the phone with Derek and he finished up the LCQ just 4 spots shy of making the show tomorrow. He wanted me to pass along a Big Thank You to ALL of y’all that wished him well and had his back. He certainly gave it his all and for sure put himself in front of a lot of those young guns. He showed up with a positive attitude and put himself out there. It’s easy to be an armchair quarterback but I can assure you he isn’t. He’s a great guy/friend/Brother and a huge supporter of the sport that all of us in the MX community love and well respected down here in the TX moto scene. Great job Brother, I love ya man🤘🏻💯🤘🏻

Don't usually revive older threads. But this pic of DW a friend posted on FB is worth it. Some of us are cool. None of us are lined-up-next-to-Howerton cool.

How many MXers can say they’re sponsored by Baskin Robbins? That’s a win in my book!

I can understand your point seeing you’re a curmudgeon that doesn’t ride himself.
