What were the 84 kx125's like? I found one locally with a steep asking price (I can probably talk him down to $600, the bike runs and looks ok).
That bike was a really good handling, confidence inspiring ride for sure and was fast enough stock.
It was pretty reliable as well from what I remember.
I'd take a good look myself at it if the bike were in my area.
I went to the '90 YZ 250 that was my all time fav bike owned.
But had a lot of green going thru my veins for years.
I've seen rare sightings on craigs in NorCal on the '88/'89's.

Are there many differences between 84 and 85 as far as finding replacement parts goes?
Also, does anyone make a replacement gas tank for these old bikes? The one on it had gas left in it for a long time and is very discolored. Or can the discoloration be taken out somehow?

I parted out a few 84s and 85s and still have a few parts.
No replacement tanks, just OEM ones on FeePay

Yeah, like TJ said, I seem to recall a frame issue on mine; can't recall where mine was except I think it was around the engine cradle.

If it were by my area, I'd VERY highly consider it...IMO.
Part availability or not, it seems that it hasn't been hammered in the ground and if it were in my area, I'd go thru it and if all's good buy it despite the part availability.
We MXers are real resourceful when it comes to finding other parts to match up and make work, if needed.
If you do get it, let us know and good luck.
I'd buy it in a heartbeat if in my area.

It looks like it is in very good condition from the pictures. I would snag it up if I were you but of course that is just me.
A good bike with great power.
One thing though,
in case it still has the stock crank bearings in it, do not use Belray oil.
For some reason it caused the teflon bearing parts to desinigrate.
I had to put a set in.
They turn great, very stable in the air.
Just keep an eye on the fasteners. If you look close at it, I'll bet you can find mis-matched nuts, and bolts...It was a great bike in 1984.

I have a 1988 KX 125 New rear tire with 49t sprocket with extra 47t sprocket. Extra gas tank (has small crack in it. but can be fixed) It runs great.great for beginners. I rode it last on June 21,2008 but wife went out and bought me a newer bike. She wants this out of the yard. $750.00 or best offer needs to get out too much stuff in our yard.

Both were awesome bikes. I think I raced my '84 more than any bike that I had before or since (almost every weekend in '84).
My brother also had an '84 125 at the same time and I really can not recall too many issues with either of our bikes.
One odd thing that I do recall that I thought was worth a mention was that the water pump impeller seemed to have some odd tendencies to wear out and/or freeze up on occassion.
I don't rember ever frying a motor as a result, but seem to remember a steamy moto or two that nessesitated us checking for the source of the problem.
I know that we went through at least a couple that season. I can't recall offhand, but I think it was a plastic impeller. I also remember that the impeller housing even cracked on my brother's bike one moto.
Just thought I'd thow my 2-cents in for whatever its worth--- you might just want to double check this or keep an eye out from time to time.
Have fun!! ...I'd say for $700 you got a great bike at a real good price.
