About Thomas Covington coming back to Europe. Today I spoke to a well informed insider and he said following thing. Because Covington still got a one year deal with Husqvarna, Mitch Covington has tried to create a "Monster Energy Husqvarna Team" lead by Jacky Martens with riders: Thomas Covington and this is the biggest news Justin Barcia!
Husqvarna wasn't really against this idea, but to get these two riders both Husqvarna and Monster Energy needed to go "All-In" also financially. Something Red Bull has blocked, going politician-modus. Non of the two Austrian brands (KTM & Husqvarna) will (ever) support a Monster Energy sponsored team (financially). Monster Energy is the only brand of energy drink close to Red Bull and Red Bull clearly didn't hesitate to use their power at the KTM Group to prevent a Monster Energy Logo shining on a official supported Husqvarna/KTM bike.
So Husqvarna has told the "Covington clan" that they can't support them in this project and they (talked) or are still talking with almost all brands. But knowing that most teams doesn't have the same financial space as Husqvarna/KTM because they don't sell as much off road bikes, I suspect that they won't be aiming at Justin Barcia anymore. Thomas Covington and Max Anstie on Green,Blue,Yellow,Red,... bikes would look like a solid team but the same can be said about Guillod, Tixier and others like Searle.
However wouldnt it be better to look at a team that allready has solid financial backing? If you get Monster and you combine that with what a Gebben, Hutten or Motobluez allready has then what is needed from a factory would be much less then to start from scratch. (not taking into account that those teams probably are allready under contract for 2020 at this point in time)
He has finished outside the top 10 in 67% of the races
He has finished outside the top 7 in 91% of the races
He has just 1 top 5 finish (a 5th place)
He has just 29 points more then Brian Bogers, who nobody considers as good all year.
(i get that he offers value with his Lupino like performances and possibly some upside combined with him bringing sponsorship).
If Barcia can get a long term contract for good $ i'm sure he will be interested to talk. Not saying he would come just that with him showing interest in GPs before he seems like a guy that would be interested in talking.
I have no idea if he is under contract though.
BOS told Rodriquez had back injury and cant race... but seems just fine and will be riding Yamaha.
BOS teams seems.. i dont know even what to say about it after all happened.
Pit Row
Thats awesome for him!
In MX2, KEMEA Yamaha gets the full factory status. Geerts and Watson stay on board.
Henry Jacobi will move to MXGP, with SM Action-MC Migliori. Maxime Renaux will stay in MX2 and Andrea Adamo in EMX250.
Hutten Metaal becomes the official EMX250 team.
IceOne bringing back AJ is a good move imo. He has been better than many expected this year, hopefully he can crank it up a notch for next year. Did Jonass have a contract for next year already with Husky?
Rumor is also that Livia will be again picking some talent in Australia, any Aussie knowing something about that?!
Imo hiring Evans is a good move for HRC if they keep him in MX2. With 1 year extra experience, a factory Honda and Prado out of the class i could see him as a potential championship contender.
But moving up to MXGP now? Seems quite a risk that you end up with a guy outside of top 10 in most races again.
I would sign Vlaanderen for the 450 ride and then put Evans on Vlaanderens HRC 250. Evans + HRC in MX2 could win the title in 2020.
