My $.02

I'd stay away from the upper level Rams with air suspension if long term durability is your goal. Zero chance that crap holds up over time and it would seem to be a pretty costly out-of-warranty repair. Same with the active grill shutters and the other gimmicks that FCA puts on those trucks. Otherwise, I think the 5.7 Hemi is one of the best motors you can get in a half ton.

Two of my buddies have '16 F150s, one with the 3.5 ecoboost and one with the 5.0. The turbo v6 is the better truck motor. Makes gobs of torque at low rpm and was designed from the get-go for truck applications. The 5.0 was originally designed for the Mustang; its a high revving, relatively small displacement v8. It's a solid reliable motor, but for towing and hauling the 3.5 is the better engine.

I have no experience with the modern GMs but I've always heard good things about the reliability of the LS motors.

The Tundra is outdated and overpriced in my opinion.
You notice that Chevy, gmc, and ford all have active air shutters

As a long time Toyota Tundra owner (bought a new one in 2010)- we have finally decided to buy a new truck. Loved my Tundra, but they haven't changed in 13 years and I wanted something different. I know going from a Tundra to a Chevy or Dodge is taking a major step down from a quality/reliability standpoint..(not interested in the F150).

I loved the looks of the new 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 and took one for a test drive. The interior is way outdated and cheap/basic as fuck. The ride was decent and the engine was typical Chevy- lethargic. Bottom line- your not getting much value for the price.

The salesman convinced me to drive the new 2019 Ram. Knowing Dodge's quality is terrible and their reliability is horrible I was very hesitant to even drive one. Took one for a test ride and loved the truck. The interior is very modern and has lots of options. The ride quality was great and the power was on par with my Tundra.

So anyways..my friend/neighbor owns the Dodge dealer and got me a great price on a new Ram (~$14,000 off MSRP).

If you end up considering the Ram, the hemi is a solid motor. It basically was 345hp in the 3rd gen Ram and now (4th gen and also 5th gen brand new Rams) it is 395hp. When I ended up with my 2017 I tried to consider other trucks but the only one that sort of interested me was the F150 and it was more expensive as well.
The GM trucks interior (and exterior) really turned me off. As mentioned, the gm motors are sure as hell easiest/cheapest to modify/tinker with.

ps- This is my 3rd Ram and I haven't had any major quality issues

Ford guy here, but purchased a Chevy 1500 a few years back because of the price comparison with ford.I wouldn’t say its best any any categories, but just overall just a good truck. The 5.3 has been around for a moment and is a good platform. Not sure if they’re still having issues, but I turned of the AFM and got a tune... plus a few other things. The AFM was important for my generation 5.3, because people were burning oil due to uneven piston ring wear. The tune was just for fun. I would purchase one again. Not great mpg, but not as bad as the the Tundra my father has.

I fell down a rabbit hole looking at ZL1 camero's but I'd have to give up my dirt bike for that. Decisions....decisions...

You seem like a wise/frugile guy looking for a late model, not loaded to the gills with option kind of truck.

This should steer you absolutely clear from a 1/2 ton diesel pick up truck. There are pointless. You get a lower payload typically, lower tow rating, have to deal with emissions systems that are still relatively in their infancy which often lead to costly repairs.

On a serious note, go look at new trucks. I think you will be shocked that a "New" truck with all the available incentives will probably only be 5000$ more in the end than the 3 year old truck with 40,000 miles on it.

I've moved on to the 3/4 ton diesel trucks due to hauling a toy hauler to the track, but prior had a 13 1500 LT crew cab with leather and bucket seats. 14k off sticker when purchased new, traded in for like 8k less than original purchase price when it was 4 years old with almost 70k on it. Never skipped a beat.

An equivalent optioned ford is 5-8k more than a Chevy, and even more than that to the Ram it seems. Not sure why the Rams are so cheap.

In 2016, I had a 2007 Tundra and went shopping.
Call me an idiot, but I was only shopping Ford and Toyota because of all the bailout bullshit with GM and Chrysler. On top of that, I live in the North, so GM and Chrysler products are going to rust prematurely because they use really thin substandard metal. My dad is also a courtesy driver for a GM and Chrysler dealer. He said the GM trucks are like a revolving door going through the shop with constant problems.
After driving the two, I ended up going with the Ford with the 5.0. I just didn't trust the ecoboost for long term reliability.....yet. I have a friend that works for Ford and leases every two years. He's had both ecoboosts and the 5.0. He said that the ecoboosts will outperform the 5.0 for MPG and quickness when empty. When towing, they get real hungry and the MPG will drop below the 5.0. BTW - not one problem with the F-150. I think 3 or 4 small recalls for dumb stuff, that I actually haven't had done yet.
The reason I didn't go with the Tundra was the same as someone else mentioned, they gulp the fuel and the motor is largely unchanged since 2007. I like the styling, but not that much.
One downfall of the Ford, any motor, your insurance will be the highest of any of the trucks. When Ford went aluminum, it was the first truck to ever cost more to insure than the Tundra.

If you dont quite need the space and towing of a 1500 get a frontier. ~$5-10k less than 1500s.

I did look at those, one of my very close friends is a salesman at a local Nissan dealer but that truck is severally overdue for an update. The interior is very outdated as is the engine. I'm just not in the market for a mid-size, as mentioned before I've owned a couple Tacoma's and they are just too small for my liking.

Understood and agreed. I might get one of them myself soon. The value is just too good right now. Outdated for sure. But reliable and simple also.

The engines are dogs compared to newer stuff tho. But there are used crew cab 4x4 ones with 15k miles for like $18k. Thats a good amount of truck for under 20k. If the ridgelines were a little cheaper id prefer a ridgeline if im honest. But there almost 10k more for a similiar mileage truck.

Good point. Modern "midsize" trucks have about the same capabilities of half-tons from the late-90s/early-00s. If you don't need to tow 6k or more regularly, a midsize will work fine. Tacomas are a little too pricey but Colorados, Frontiers and the new Ranger are pretty good bargains for what you get.

I bought this about 2.5 years ago and have no big complaints. The 5.3 is fine for me. Gas mileage is pretty good(18 average). It rides and drives very good. I’ve driven a large mix of trucks between my jobs and honestly think they’re all pretty good. I bought this for the looks. Next truck would probably be the new 19+ Rams or a 2500 in any brand. Only complaint with this generation gm is no air vents for the back seats.
no air vents in the rear is why i ended up going with the RAM2500. i can't believe Chevy/GM have not changed that design yet. my dad has a '16 Chevy and if you're in the back seat you're gonna either freeze or die of heat. also the DEF tank on the Chevy is a HUGE turn-off. what fuckin' moran designed that?

Well atleast the new generation has rear air vents and a tucked away def tank. You just need to get passed the horrible look of the truck now. Laughing

Yall sure the gm doesnt have back seat air vents? Pretty sure they're under the front seats.
You say the tacos were too small but have you test drove a colorado or ranger? Leave the tacos for the short guys. My colorado averages 26-28mpg a tank and rides like a car but I find it plenty big. At least until I way overload its towing/payload and then a full size sounds good lol

One thing I did notice is RAM dropped the eco-diesel for the 2019 year models. That seems a little odd to me and also seems a little suspicious. In terms of warranty and parts availability I think I'll stick with a gas engine. So far I'm considering the RAM 1500 hemi and Ford 3.5 eco-boost. As time draws nearer I'm going to test drive both and see which one I like. Thank you guys thus far for all the information.

Ford did not take any bail out money. Instead, about 5 years prior, they leveraged most of their most important trademarks to help restructure. They leveraged the blue Ford Oval, 'Ranger', 'Taurus', as well as others.
They weren't pompous enough to just think they could fake their way through the tough times with low quality products.

That might be because they got caught cheating like Volkswagen did with the diesel emissions. GM got caught to. It was just not plastered all over the media and kind of swept under the rug.

RAM messed up not putting the Cummins in the 1500. Nissan has benefited massively from RAM’s decision to go with the EcoDiesel.

I agree. I don't have the money for a Titan XD but if I did that would be the truck I'd buy and ONLY because of the cummins. I have no desire to own their gasser.

I picked up my new Ram last night...of course we had to drive into a storm on the way home..

Pulling our boat 200 miles north this afternoon so I’ll be putting it to the test right away.

Ram dropped it for a full re design because of the new 19 frame and body parts etc. it has all ready been announced that it is re designed and coming out in 2020, Chevy is also coming out with a straight 6 Duramax
Ram did get caught up in the emissions stuff because it’s a vw motor there for all new owners get a 2600 dollar check and a 2 year 50,000 extension on their warranty
Ram also didn’t put a Cummins in for the reason that Cummins did not have the proper motor available and didn’t want to have to design a new one, the titan XD Cummins would not fit in the ram the titan has a larger frame but less towing. ( I’m kinda confused about this)
Really the eco is good for long commute and towing every day

That’s not true. Cummins designed and built the engine that’s in the Titan for the Ram 1500. Ram decided they didn’t want it because it didn’t hit their fuel economy goals. They wanted to hit 26MPG and the Cummins only got 24MPG. So Cummins was basically stuck with the engine, and instead of letting all that R&D go to waste, they worked out a deal with Nissan to put it in the Titan. The EcoDiesel isn’t a VW engine, it’s a VM Motori, which is owned by Fiat.

From what I’ve herd from the ram dealer is Cummins didn’t want to design a motor, Nissan had Cummins build the motor for them.
Sorry typo Vm not vw

From Automobile magazine:
While not yet officially EPA rated, Head of engineering at Ram Trucks, Mike Cairns, says he expects the Ram EcoDiesel to reach at least 26 mpg highway. “Our simulations were showing 23 to 24 mpg for [the 5.0-liter engine],” Cairns told us last week at the 2014 Ram Trucks press introduction in Westlake Village, California. “We love Cummins,” he continued.”The 6.7-liter is by far the best in its class. But the 5.0 is not optimized well for fuel economy.”

Nissan saw the bigger engine was still in development to be used in light and medium-duty commercial vehicles. “We were going to put it into something, and Nissan stepped up,” says a Cummins representative of the new 5.0-liter engine. We asked Nissan’s Vice President of Commercial Vehicles Joe Castelli if the engine would just serve duty in the 2015 Titan or whether Nissan might put it in any other vehicles. “It’ll fit in the NV,” he said. “But we’re not going to do it if all we’re going to see is a one or two mpg advantage (over the gas engines).” Nissan has also said that in surveys, it has found that 17 percent of pickup truck owners would consider switching loyalties if a light-duty truck were available with a V-8 diesel. The company figures that’s approximately 300,000 customers per year.

5.3 is a really simple motor and you can tune it to hell
That 16-18 body is super clean with the body color match on the bumper with the z71
The rams are clean to it’s just preference I think the ram has more towing and payload.
Go drive both and see what you think
Did some research on that and from what I found the update was done in 2016 model year. However I could not find where RAM officially addressed the issue, customers (reseachers) noticed the part numbers changed in the 2016 hemi. After doing more reading some guys are reporting the issue can still happen in the 2017 and up engines. The work around I've found is using redline syn oil (high molybdenum content) and turning off the MDS system. These two things are supposed to put the odds in the owners favor to keep the cam issues from occurring.
