so if IVs were allowed, that would mean everyone would need an IV to be competitive, week in and week out..... So that would mean well over 100 riders would be getting them, creating a potential health hazzard/ shitshow - not only to the competitors, but also the medical waste it would create. Who is gonna pay for all that waste? Who is gonna pay all the nurses? Maybe they could take the money from their union dues?

If its so bad, they should just shorten the races- a bunch of teenagers and young men routinely doing IV insertions given by bike mechanics or parents in the middle of a national with all the dirt etc. is a recipe for disaster. Competing in a motorcycle race should not be considered a medical emergency.
Some additional points:

Shortening the races is an option too.

Plenty of IVs have been given on the battlefield with little complication.

Getting heat stroke is a true medical emergency - prevention is the key.

Giving someone an IV isn’t hard. It can be done with little training and saline isn’t that expensive. I learned in less than a couple of hours during a combat lifesaver course. It’s been awhile but I’d bet I could still do it easy.

It was 105 degrees at the 1981 250 National. We were warned at the rider's meeting about hydration during the race. In the first moto, nearly every rider stopped for water except Hannah and Howerton. In moto two, they both stopped for water. Were they pussies or were they smart? Oh yeah, it was in June.
Great pic! Thanks for sharing. Where is this? They were not doing whimpy 30+2 motos either. I still think 40+2 is what it should be.

1981 St. Petersburg National. I went 21-28. Only 38 riders showed up for the 250 class. I guess no one wanted any part of that 105 degrees. Yes, it was 40+ minutes.

I can’t believe we didn’t see hydration packs on riders yesterday. I know Alessi did that at least once. They make small enough packs that you don’t even notice, and the hands free system means you never have to locate the hose to grab a drink.
Trying to hydrate during the race is WAY too late. Should be done the day before and continue till you race. Drinking during the race is tits on a snake.

If you didn’t hydrate or prepare beforehand, of course it is too late. I never said that.

Getting electrolytes and water throughout an extremely demanding moto, especially moto 2, would be beneficial. If it wasn’t, why would racers be drinking water and electrolyte drinks between motos where there is such a quick turnaround time. Anytime you can replace, even small amounts, will help. Especially in Florida where the humidity is so high and we don’t get the significant benefits of good evaporation off your skin.

Shoot, I mean, even letting it dribble out of your mouth and down your jersey would help. I know it does for me.

Remember that getting ready for LL's thread?

Said in there you have to pack on water, and that takes time.
Your body, your muscles, store water and it isn't something that happens right away, it takes time, and by the time you're thirsty,, it's too late

I think the shower idea as they come off the track is a great idea. Even in their riding gear, soak them down with cool water as much as they want. Ice bath later, but something to help bring core temperature down immediately.
Years ago the Northern Ireland GP kilinchy (the John Donnelly) they threw buckets of water on the torso of the local racers to keep them cool mid race, it worked well but would it be allow today ?

I remember racing as a kid, people, including us, would bring fire extinguishers filled with water or pump pressure 5 gallon bug sprayer bottles.

Our Dad would spray us as we rode past mechanic area

This is ridiculous! Remove heads from asses please. This is motocross! There don’t need to be more rules to pander to the few guys that can’t cut it in the heat. Two fields of 40 riders and a few have heat stress issues. It is what it is! Like holy crap. That’s like saying that Denver should be off the schedule because some guys get altitude sickness! Ridiculousness. No ivs, let the format alone.

You can also rinse minerals like potassium and salt from your body by drinking too much plain water.

I remember a news story where a girl in Colorado I believe took ecstasy and drank too much water. Upon the coroners report it was water intoxication listed as cause of death not a reaction or overdose from the ecstasy. What a shitty way to go.

Maybe instead of drinking the water, it could be instead slowly dripped onto your body to supplement sweat. Not sure how you would rig up such a system

I’m sorry. I know it was hot and really rough conditions but this is their job. Their whole life revolves around training and riding and I find it hard to understand how one 30 minute moto could really be as tough for these top guys as it really was.

Blood born illness from an IV... it’s an IV not free based coke or meth and a bunch of homeless dudes shooting each other up in an alley sharing the same needle! Where do you guys get this stuff?

maybe spend some time in the military and see a dirty environment with dudes humping a hundred pounds of gear through the bush in Georgia, Louisiana or AFG that fall out and get an IV whacked in their arms.... been serving for 28 years and have never heard about a blood born illness from an IV.

As for medical waste, throw the needles in a sharps container and collect the IVs and bring them to the nearest urgent care or ER and they will dispose as needed.

That being said, when you need an IV for heat exhaustion or stroke like cooper had at the end of Moto 2 you are down for the count and should not be allowed to go back out for the second Moto and probably next weeks race.

Awesome! I thought that was St. Pete. Sunshine Speedway. I would have been there too. Don't remember the heat being so bad though because we raced all summer long in Florida anyway! Ha!

I still have my open face Electro helmet I wore that day.

I think we were just tougher back then. Smile

I bottle water for a living, and I tell everyone who will listen what to look for on the label.

If it says "Filtered by reverse osmosis" ONLY, I wouldn't suggest drinking much of it.

You should see on the label "Magnesium Sulfate, Potassium Chloride" at the bare minimum as an ingredient.

Those 2 minerals like to attach themselves to water.
If you drink water without those, what you drink starts absorbing those minerals from you, and you just pass them. That's not good.

Never ever drink distilled water, and be warned about R.O. water. Those filters can take too much out.

Read your labels if you drink a lot of bottled water.

Ouch! Threw up 4 times, blurry vision, and could hardly walk after the podium. Dude definitely gave his all that moto. Glad he made the call not to go for it in moto 2.

Yes right, stop the riders that getting cooled down by the wind, it will take 5sec and they will start to boil inside. It is not about water/hydration, it is about body/organ temp.

You do realize that every race every single rider stops at the end right?

They also get to remove goggles, helmet, gloves and boots and get access to unlimited amount of cooling.

Stoping to later continue is the absolute worst thing to do when conditions are like that.

Man I know it's not the "cool" thing to do, no pun intended but wear a small camelback. You don't have to look like a full on woods rider....but wear a small one and put enough in there for you to recover for crying out loud. Just try it and see how you like it.

But Jesus, the liquid would have minimal effect. It is the heat that is the issue and to drink a mouth or two during a 35min moto would have minimal to no effect on heat.

The issue with heat also escalate ones they turn down the speed and start going off track.

I have myself issues with heat and all I want to do at the end of a moto is pull my gear off and stand on the outdoor shower I have for a minute or two to cool down. I'm typically not even thirsty but I'm boiling from the inside because of all the gear.
