Herlings would have undoubtedly felt that glancing hit, especially if it had just been damaged in the prang itself, so it's understandable it might register, to him, as being what may have caused the injury. But, he sure as hell wasn't landed on. Which, is a bit of good luck, in this latest back luck for him.
I hope he heals up, but, with the rate of injuries he's sustained, previously, and now this one, it's highly unlikely He'll get near the title count of Everts, Cairoli, or some others. He's certainly one of, if not, the most mindbogglingly talented and fast riders I've ever seen. Scarely so.
I thought / hoped we'd see Herlings show up during a break in the GPs at, say, Unadilla (He was set to do it one of his injury ruined 250 years) this year , but, I'd say that's not going to happen now.
Such a bummer for Cairoli. In a report I read, they (he / his Team) put it down to a weakness in his arm / hand from the previous weeks Big prang, and it sort of explains the nature of this prang. I do hope he can still ride competitively for the rest of the season. It's not over, yet.
Sadly his always pushing at 150% mindset that we all love bites him in the ass way too much. His need to "Dominate", live up to "The Bullet", etc has already costed him many titles & race wins.

That’s exactly the problem. He’s not exactly trying to win at the slowest speed possible. Going down like that in the sighting lap is stupid when your nursing and healing an injury. A bit less ego massaging and some more pragmatism wouldn’t go amiss. Now he’s out for longer. We all know he’s good enough to win Moto’s at this level even with a broken foot. This is not the way forward for him. Slow down, still win and be more healthy = more titles. Having said that Jesus he’s good to watch when he’s pinned.

he has had that many fractures with almost every crash in his career its unreal , ,some were bad luck and some were bad decisions but in the end there was a fracture and time off and a title gone ..
on the other hand , Gajser seems to be made out of rubber bones , looking at his crashes and he walks away 9 out of 10
i hope Tony gets back soon and makes the rest of season some how interesting as rest of riders are too far behind
