I'm a diehard Toyota Tacoma owner but I need a newer half ton truck to haul a 20' travel trailer. Tundra is an old design with good reliability but poor gas mileage and an ugly design. The 13th generation f150 looks bitchen and gets 26 mph...better than my tacoma. Would this truck tow a bed full of bikes and a loaded travel trailer through the CA mountains well? I've read some stories the ecoboost is not that reliable. Any help would be appreciated.
I didn't go into too much details with him because I'm not too much of a fan of that motor. I went with the 5.0L 2016 F-150.
i get 32 highway and 26 city( with a 14 foot dual axle loaded up to 6k with a 355 rear
get the 392 rear
go up to the service window and ask how much a eco boost turbo costs
the 19 ram 1500 with the hemi get best towing and is awesome get the 392 in that with e torque you get 20 highway
id rather go with a steel truck with 15k off then a aluminium.
i just bought a truck
for 32k you can get a ford with the 2.7 eco xlt no center counsel cloth small screen 2x4
or a ram 5.7 v8 ( or eco) Laramie with a bigger rear end big screen leather sun roof and a center counsel 4x4
i know what id buy.
Whenever I need to get around traffic going up the Pass I Just stomp on the throttle Can feel those TwinTurbos kick in pulls like a Mother F**ker.
Bought it new in 2015 and love it. Good luck in whatever you decide to buy.

If it was me I would get a 5.0 or a ram with the 5.7
I love the eco but it’s a diesel and it’s not for everyone
But good for me with the low end torque
The 2.7 and 3.5 ecoboosts have similar low end and significantly more horsepower than the ecodiesel Ram, plus don't have the diesel emissions equipment to deal with (a consideration if you're keeping the truck for a decade or more).
VoidMain- the milage got better when they went to the aluminum body and then put the 10 speed in them. I have an '18 Raptor and it's getting about what you're seeing with your 2014.
What you have to look at it where the truck makes it torque for the eco it’s 420 foot pounds at 2k rpm and for the eco boost it’ 400 (for 2019) at 3k rpm
For the later version of the 2.7 it’s 375 at 3k rpm.
We see who the winner is. And at the price point of 32k you can get a ram eco or hemi big horn( maybe a good deal on a Laramie). Or a ford 2.7 eco xlt for 36 and have half the stuff
Then with the 4K you save you can get a egr delete hot tune increase you mpg by 5 more and a leather kit and then still have saved 2k on your new truck.
And do you really want a aluminum body truck. Easier to punch holes through.
Honestly you can buy what ever you want, but I think fords are over priced and I can’t stand the v6 turbo idea. I think turbos are for diesels or high out put super cars.
And really in longevity I think a eco diesel or any v8 hemi coyote or the gm 5.3 or 6.2 will beat a v6 turbo
3 seconds of searching, xlt 4x4 supercrew with the 2.7:

I don't think the Ecodiesel in the Ram has a particularly stellar reputation either.
Yes the eco had problems 16 below but 17+ are awesome trucks
But the way it looks ram takes for in everything except for horse power wise
Old:
New:
so with the 2.7 at 18 city and 23 highway and the eco diesel at 20 city and 28 highway if you are driving a 100 mile round trip
gas will cost for 87-12.06 dollars, if you run the required 89 its 14 dollars.
diesel it will cost 10.25 and the def you will use is 50 cents of def( not even)
then auto guide used 2 crew cab 4x4 trucks one with the 2.7 and one with the eco diesel and did a 54 mile loop
for the 2.7 its 18 mpg and the eco diesel 26mpg.
there for the eco wins in the highway and the city.
then we will use tfl trucks numbers for mpg
for the ram eco 4x2 with 7850 pounds behind it ( more to equal the 4x4 weight) mpg up the hill was 6.1
for the ford 2.7 eco boost 4x4 with 7600 pounds behind it mpg up the hill was 4.3.
the ram eco diesel pulls ahead again
and the cost per mile for the 2.7 is 19 cents with the eco at 15.7
Sure, look at fuel savings for cost difference. But the two year old 3/4 diesel will bring 95% of purchase price on trade, while that gas truck will bring 50-60%. Perfect example, 06-08 3/4 diesel, 20k. 06-08 gas job, 10k if you're lucky. I trade my 3/4 diesels every 2 years with ~30-35k miles on them, and typically get about 3-4k less than original purchase price.
If you're towing, avoid the ecoboost gas truck. Ford themselves even says this. The day you see 26 mpg in a 4wd 2.7 f150 crew cab or extended cab, on a regular basis, i'll eat my hat. BTW, theres a current criminal investigation with the fuel ratings on these................
Pit Row
But for me if I can save a few grand for me and my company over the years I’ll go for it and if I get all most 10. More miles to a gallon that’s a no brainer
One thing I would not buy is a ford eco boost ( don’t like the idea of a twin turbo v6) or the power stroke 3.0 go watch the tfl on the power stroke on the ike (lol)
I guess it’s different strokes for different folks
But the big thing is the price premium of the diesel over gas. You'd have to really be towing a lot to justify it in a 1/2 ton. And in that case, a gas v8 3/4 ton is probably still the better truck for the job.
I have a Ram with a pretty loud exhaust and it sounds sweet (v8) but if it goes into MDS (4cyl mode) it sounds horrible.
but with all this eco boost talk i went out and test drove a 2.7 and a 3.5 just too see
i didnt like the 2.7 and the 3.5 was pretty fast and cool but i still stick to my eco diesel and me hemi
also i didnt like the layout of the ford.
the also apprised my truck for shits and giggles and gave me a 35k thats more than i payed for it lol
