Urgent help (kxf 250 big problem)

Okay..
i was changing the oil filter, put in the new one, put the spring on the the oil filter plug, evergthing is fine. of 2 screws, i start screwing the bottom one, and i feel it's a little hard. So i took it off, the top one went in easily with my hands. I re-try screwing the bottom one and still doesn't go on.
I looked at it and there was a filing on the screw.
QUESTION: if the thread of the screw is damaged, what should i do? I'm not going to change the carter as it's a '14 kxf.

Run a chase in the hole, it should be fine if you haven't ran the screw in too far.

If its the bolt thats stripped youd have to order a new one online/at a Kawi dealer. Or your next best bet would be a BOLT kit, just make sure you get the one that comes with the right bolt and not just the plastic bolt kit. But if the hole inside the case is stripped too then you may need to get it drilled and tapped, but you may be able to save it.

Weld up the hole & redrill and tap. Any competent shop should be able to do this for you fairly cheap

Hope so. Tomorrow i'll call local shop, the owner is a great guy and i'm hoping he is albe to do it. His son raced internazionali d'italia and he is even a suspension tuner so i'm sure he will be able to help me.

Sounds like you have pulled the thread in the casing. Not sure what you guys call it but here its a Helicoil (thread repair kit) have a mechanic put one of these in.

Get a couple of new bolts for good measure. It's a simple and in-expensive fix. Good luck

Stay away from welding the hole up and then re-tapping.

If he is a suspension tuner then I can guarantee you that he has repaired thread for fork guards and will easily sort you out.

These aren't that hard to install. Just be careful when drilling out the old threads. Keep the drill straight!

Do this ^^^^ it's most likely to fix your problem and is the quickest and cheapest option. The tread is still there but is damaged. If this does not fix your problem, chasing the thread won't affect your chances of using a thread insert down the track.

There is still thread farther in the hole just get a little longer bolt .

chase it then get a bolt that's 1/8 inch or so longer....done this before with great results...I do not like drilling/ tapping unless absolutely necessary.

Take your good bolt to a hardware store. Make sure you find out exactly what size it is ( metric) get a tap for that size and run it down the hole slow and straight by hand. If you can’t get the bolt in you probably still have thread left. Use oil when tapping and clean out all shavings

please do not weld and drill, that is the extreme. You have a small amount of shaving on the bolt end, take a 6mm tap chase the hole and a new bolt same length is fine reinsert. all better.

Glad you got it fixed, but for next time go a step beyond beyond the Heli-coil and use a Time-Sert. Much More durable than a helicoil, especially for a bolt that gets removed often.
