Holeshots the LCQ and then fades back to 12th... if i was the husky team manager I’d be so embarrassed to have that on my factory team. I dont care if he has never done SX before he is a world chanpionship contender last year and he comes 12th in an LCQ on the east coast SX?! And its not just a 1 off thing last night he did this earlier in the series as well. Pisses me off hes still got a ride.

What's interesting to see in person is that he looks like he's riding a long cushy GP bike. Can't turn and looks like playdoh in the whoops. He looks like the most awkward guy on the track and I have to think that a lot of that is his bike setup is fighting him.

It's crazy to see 3 digit noname guys gaining 5 bike lengths on him every time they go through the whoops.

I completely understand that he's learning SX but I would still consider pulling the plug on this experiment and getting a jump on the MX season. Even though there is a legitimate reason for him struggling, it still has to be a threat to his overall confidence. He needs to be on his A game outdoors. We'll need him for the MXdN.

I could be wrong, but as I recall, his decision to race in Europe was because he didn’t want to ride Supercross. He’s not back here because he wanted to give SX a try. He’s here because he got bumped up and didn’t find a competitive ride to stay in Europe in MXGP.

He could've stayed in GPs another year in MX2 but then would have to go MXGP in 2020. He came back a year early because Rockstar Husky US had an open spot and could guarantee a two year deal, if he didn't come back this year they weren't sure how'd they structure the team the year after as they'd probably have to go a different route.

He has all the ability in the world, just needs to get over the mental hump and realize that all the bike handling skills he has can be applied to any track, indoors or out. When you spend 50 sec of every lap worrying about the few seconds that you are going to be in the whoop's, it's hard to expect any sort of decent result.

Add in the possible knee injury and it's gotta feel like a waste of time to even line up, mentally.

I think Covington would benefit as much from a good sports psychologist as anything. He's probably a lot better equipped to race a SX track than he's believed himself to be for the last several years.

Allow him to be a rookie. Come outdoors I would expect better results than SX.

While there are some other valid points in this thread, I'd bet dollars to donuts he's injured. He looked injured to me, riding very gingerly. Not to mention what an injury does to someone mentally.

I'm a big TC fan and hope he is much better outdoors. But I'm confident he won't be anywhere near MXoN.

Genuinely like the dude, great person and hard worker...

Now, he lived in Belgium for 5 years.. riding Lommel etc. before moving to Europe, he had virtually no supercross experience.. monster cup is not SX .. it’s very easy for the 85 riders. + no whoops.

He raced In Europe for five years, becoming very very good and winning races here and there. Now he has transitioned back to the US and it’s not as easy as people think it is to just move back to where you’re from after making friends and a home etc in Europe.

Yes, he rides for Rockstar Husqvarna here, just like he did there... but come on, if you think the bikes are the same, you’re crazy... tires, chassis, suspension, etc is all different as you guys have seen how much are done to those GP bikes!

You also have to remember how soft euros run their chassis ... even I struggle with it everytime I go over there, but it’s better on their tracks. He has probably never even had a SX set of suspension until he came back here.

Give him time, he just needs to be comfortable with whoops and big rhythms and riding in 2nd gear and not being in 3-4th gear leaning back wide open for 30 min!

He will be a threat outdoors.

He is simply just learning supercross and getting his feet wet! He will be fine in 2020.
someone that actually knows what they're talking about...you're out of place here on Vital, my friend! A welcome breath of fresh air...

Maybe I’m putting too much stock in him having ridden well at that track in the past. I would put him in a pool of riders that includes BB, AF, JB51 and CW as solid #1 choices and then guys like ET and AC making the list as well but just below the others.

He qualified and got an 11th at Minneapolis and 15th at Daytona, so I doubt there would be that much of a drop off without something being wrong (injury), unless his confidence is completely shattered.

he was never a permanent mx2 contender! he had some good results on some good days but that’s it.
if he finish a national in the top 5 i’m very surprised.

yes the bikes here are different but still, it’s a dirt bike. same with justin starling. he comes over, get’s a good bike ( martinez on the same bike wins many races) but he is just not able to get it together and throws the towel after one round. it’s all in the head! they just not mentaly strong enough!

I think your understating him. He wasn’t consistent but in his last couple years he was one of the 4 fastest. Last year when he got 100% healthy only the KTM boys were better, I believe he won motos in 3 or 4 straight races last year. Only top guys do that. He had TKOs number in raw speed that’s for sure, and after Pardo he is the next big thing.

Supercross is a gnarly and cruel series to jump right into, and more so now than ever. More so than when Musquin and Roczen jumped in, and they were GP world champions. I don't know what Husky expected from Covington in SX, but the dude clearly wasnt ready or is injured.

Why do people just state it as fact that US riders arent as good at mx... I dont get it. Anderson beat Herlings winning his mxon moto, Tomac has beat AC and Herlings a few different times and still has a winning record... Im not saying either of them are FMOTP, but the way people just state it as if its fact is a joke... Our top riders and GP top riders can and DO win at different times when racing eachother. The tops of both sides of the pond are at the elite top of the sport. The facts dont back up ur conclusion based off a bad mxon.. Outside this mxon the top guys from both sides finish right near the front I dont see Tomac winning at WW then getting 3rd as cant ride mx anymore... Did u not watch Tomac last mx season able to put 6 seconds a lap on Marv..

I don't think so because this is only one example. Look at Weltin. He rode GPs and the EMX series for years and he has been decent. It would've been interesting to see Lawrence race SX this year.

But that could sadly be the future. Especially if nothing changes regarding the US "amateur" scene and how they develop compared to the EMX system. US kids are getting more and more customed to short races and SX style tracks while the Euro based kids are racing 25 min + 2 lap races on the same tracks as the GP riders.

But now to Covington. This was one of the easiest layouts that i have seen for a long time. A guy with his talent should do so much better than this. His knee has to be the reason for this. I have still faith in him!
Short races is nothing new for US amateurs.

I'm surprised to see all the hate, while some of the TLD KTM guys have had rough nights as well. Those are also rookies and they've made some mistakes. Hopefully he stays healthy and get's some more confindence outdoors

Threat outdoors ? Hahaha
Come on, who was he beating over there? No one.
He’ll be a 7-10 rider at best , if that. Once he gets to the east coast rounds of MX the 95% humidity and traveling will eat him up. I’ve never understood the hype for this kid.

He better of give up on SX this year and train for the outdoors like Lawrence is doing.

Yes, hes from the GP's, but its gonna be a hell of a different story when he'll line up with the wrong settings behind the gate @ Hangtown ....

He's on a factory bike, getting swallowed up by guys that have never made a main event in the LCQ on the less stacked coast.

Mentally, hes just going to fall in pieces more and more, i just don't see the point anymore.
