If I wrecked badly and put a good dent in my helmet then I would replace it. But not for scratches and tiny knocks. I'm not saying that's the right thing to do but it's the only thing that's realistically affordable for me over time.
That is the truth when it comes to how most of think.

Sorry but this is so annoying Tongue Replacing your helmet everytime time you "crash" is unneccessary. Everytime you smack your head sure! Absolutely but eveytime you "crash" is ridiculous. Pointless spending money when your shoulder, feet, arms or hip took the impact. Dont give me the cant put a price on your head line either Tongue
Where do you draw the line. Football players wear the same helmets over and over. Smashing the crap out of them.

We are also starting to see the effects of that....and it's only going to get scarier if you ask me.

No, if I did I would have had to replace a helmet near every race. I race off road enduro/HS I run top 3 A/B level and go down at leas a few times per race, not saying a take a dirt nap or anything but some are fairly good get off's. Ask yourself if you think a crash in a sx race happend do the riders stop and get a new helmet??? the (I replace my helmet every time) guys are just like the OEM,oil, this or that's the only way for the most part, full of BS.LOL
Dude, you are wrong. Sorry. But helmets are made to absorb a certain level of impact ONE time. I race off road too. I crash nearly every race too, it's just part of it. But most of those crashes don't require helmet replacement. When you hit your head hard you know it and you should replace your helmet. If the styrene inside is compromised it will not absorb a second impact. Likewise for a cracked of severely flexed shell.

Hi All,

I crashed on the weekend at about 50kms p/h, head first into the dirt and was unconscious for about a minute. Big scratches all over my helmet. I'm assuming by these posts I probably should get a new one .....

Signs point to Yes.
I replaced mine after getting knocked cold in a bad one. I think we can all sort of judge when it might need replacing.

If i crash hard i change it. Mainly i don't change it because of money, i'm a 17 student.. If i had more money for sure i would. Always from the money side, 50% of the times that i crash i bend my handlebar, (twinwall 999, 150€), so if i had to spend 200/300€ for the helmet and 150€ for the handlebar, probably i couldn't ride anymore

Welcome to the vital brain trust. You can expect a very heated debate on whether or not you should replace your helmet after a head first crash resulting in being knocked out.

This thread reminds me of a trip to Glamis in the late 90's. The people camped closest to us had a teenage kid on a KX250 who was the definition of a squirrel on wheels. The kid was jumping all over without scouting landings and was a Novice rider at best. We found a good hit that was probably 100 ft to clear, but you could jump out to about 150 without any worries. Kid tried to jump it after I and another recommended he not jump this one. As expected, he ate crap and got knocked out. The mother came riding up on a quad after he crashed and was regaining consciousness and asked us if he was alright. My buddy without missing a beat "How smart was he before the crash? I don't think you'll notice any difference" The mother then proceeded to say that at least he didn't break his helmet, he had crashed several times in that one and didn't want a new one! LOL!

Only one helmet replaced in 30y of racing, due to a crash.
Only after a head first jump over a camelgrass bump in Morocco, after which i got my arm straight into the running rearwheel and ended on my face downwards with the bike on top of my upper body.

I felt mighty alone there lying there for 1/2 hour till next competitor found me...
That helmet is sitting nog on a place of honor on a shelf.
It was an Arai btw.

1. Concussion = replace helmet
2. Signs of possible concussion and I go Max 1 or 2 hits and then helmet is done
3. Replace every 3 year even without crashes

Foam lose their ability to flex from sweat and water. Also getting micro compressed when riding and it moves back and fwd/up and down.

Arai says you can drop your helmet up to a metre high & it'll be fine.

There is a huge misconception concerning the difference between on and off road crashes. If you ever crash in a street helmet and your head makes contact with the ground you should replace it. Dirt helmets have much more impact technology, which has been more noticeable in recent years. Dirt helmets are MADE to withstand a certain amount of impact that does not require you to replace them after the slightest tip over.

It's really common sense. If you don't remember a crash, then replace it. If you fall and scratch it, but it's a cosmetic scratch and the internal liner is not damaged then you are pretty safe to use it again.

I believe a handful of people in this thread are honestly being hypocrites. The average person could not afford to replace their helmet with another high end EVERY single time they go down.

I do if like previously said with the inside foam being crushed. I purchased a new Shoei VFX-W and lawn darted and was con·cussed and the shape of my head had crushed the foam in about 1/8".
Had to put it on the shelf after calling Shoei. If I'm not mistaken with Shoei and others if the black paint on the foam shows visible white or spider web the recommend replacing it.

I agree with this. If you can see that the foam is compromised, then it's time to replace. If not, the helmet is still good.

PS, are you Jaybird from Reflex back in the day? If so, you are the one who told me I should sign up for mxonline tournaments. Had a lot of fun battling you in those days.

Sending mine to Shoei today for inspection. I endo’d over a small double racing AX, and got a slight concussion. Wasn’t completely KO’d, but I don’t remember finishing the race, leaning my bike against the wall, and walking into the stands to sit with my buddies. I couldn’t even remember where we parked for a couple minutes.

That’s funny. I raced with a jaybird on there too. He also told me about the mxonline races.

That is not a good way of determine if the helmet is still fully functional. Compressed foam is very serious and you do not need cracks to make it 50% less safe.

Sweat, and multiple smaller crashes compress the foam to a level where it looses it's absoring functions.

If I have a bad crash and hit my head that helmets done for, I have kept an old one for a spare in case some odd reason I need it, but the last 2 helmets I retired had cracks in them anyway so no way id use them anyway.

I've never cracked or deformed a shell. That being said, are there manufacturers offering replacement foam liners? I hear the foam breaks down over time regardless of crash history, and surely swapping foam would make more sense than a new helmet. Same goes for smaller hits.....just get new foam... I suppose the answer would be no due to legalities and money, but it would be nice

Ok, I partially agree. If the foam isn't compressed, it's still safe. It would have to compress a fair bit to see cracks. Best to send it in for inspection if you're unsure of the damage.

The issue is that you won't see partial compression with the eye. You might be able to feel it, if you compare a new vs old helmet foam by pushing it in but I doubt you actually feel the difference.

If you look at a heavy crash with severe concussion, but without cracks in the foam (I have had 2 of those), you might not even see the foam has been compressed.

It is like people trying to determine the health of a piston by just looking at it. You need tools to measure it, and maybe even do an x-ray to expose flaws. Specially if we are talking about sweat and long term overall compression to the eps-foam that is not area specific.

I would love to see some scientific data on foam after various impacts, would be really interesting. You can do a cheap mini study by crashing your head into regulator eps-foam and see the effects ?

Yeah, I had a new helmet for about a month and had a crash that resulted in a concussion. It sucked that I had to hang the helmet up, but it was worth the piece of mind.

Respectfuly, you’re 100% wrong on this.

First of all with Street helmets it’s very possible to have an easy low side and scuff the helmet but not actually ‘impact’ the helmet. I saw this many times when I roadraced and after thorough inspection the helmet wasn’t compromised. Now if you ground down the shell any appreciable amount you’d still replace the helmet but with superficial scratches it was no big deal. I’ve also crashed roadracing and had zero scratches on the helmet but the EPS was compressed. For example a crash in the rain and you tumble into the mud.

Second of all, off road helmets are not designed to take multiple impacts. This isn’t to say every single time it touches the dirt it needs to be shelved though. We have all had easy tumbles through the dirt, but If you didn’t feel much if any of that impact and you pull the liner out and inspect the eps, the shell, etc then you’re good to go. Pretty much every manufacturer paints the inside of the eps black so it’s pretty easy to see if the eps has been compromised in any way.

And yes I’ve got a row of helmets in my garage that have been retired from crashes and literally wore one helmet for one lap roadracing before hitting the ground and it was put on the shelf.

I've always replaced mine after a head slap or a hit.

But then their is people like JS7 who will grab a brand new helmet and give it a nice scratch on the ground before even putting it on.
i've actually seen a few pro's do it. Deegans kid was another i seen do so.
No clue why, maybe goodluck? ahaha

Yes, that's a luck/superstition thing.

Most helmet companies will inspect a helmet for you if you are unsure.

Iv got a fox helmet from 5/6 years ago that has done about 10 laps out of the box, then I chucked the bike at the scenery big style, shattered left shoulder, 4 broken ribs and tore my thumb off my right hand, that's now plated and screwed back in place, got a free ride in Helicopter away from that one... Helmet looks fine but never even considered putting it back on my head, it did it's job, took me 18 months to get back on a bike and when I did it was with a new helmet.

I don't replace it after every hit. Or at least not immediatily. I pull out the helmet liner and check the foam and of course the outside shell. If it doesn't look too rough I just ride with it until I feel like buying a new helmet. Most of the time that is when I find one with a good discount.

So you don't agree with sending it in to have the foam inspected? Got it. If you get a concussion in a helmet, replace it. Kind of a no brainer.
