Ah I understand. I have seen people recommend both RAL2001 (Red Orange) and RAL2002 (Vermilion) but I've never seen them compared side by side with, say, some new OEM plastic to see which one is closest.

Hard to tell here, but they are definitely more orange than they look...and quite different from each other

Thanks again. I bought an 82 CR250 off the show room floor back in the day. Traded my 80’ KZ 750 in for it. I loved that bike and like everyone else wished I still had it. I remember my open face helmet, duck bill visor, some gloves, boots and not much else in the way of protection. Haha. Enjoying bringing the 87’ back to its glory days where it belongs

Absolutely we will !! Keep me updated on how things are going. I wouldn’t doubt if we know some of the same people. Throw some pics of your bike in if you can sometime. I’d be interested to see it

Keep in mind this is not a restore, I am just bringing it back from the dead.

Very nice......you’ve done a lot of good work. I’m curious what you did with your water pump, or did it clean up pretty good. Everyone worries about water pump issues when they buy an old bike. Corrosion was a big problem and I got lucky mine was so good. Was this years engine all black? I see a lot of restores with guys leaving their cylinders clean, not painted. Looks good I think. Great work....keep us updated on the progress!

Awesome job! One recommendation is I was able to get NOS piston and ring on ebay for my '86 CR125, I would definitely try to go that route over Weisco top end if possible.

Thanks for the kind words!

The water pump housing was really pitted but functional for now. Thankfully many years share the same part so I am going to throw a few more hours at it and replace it down the road. The cylinder and head come silver stock for this year, but the power valve exhaust 'boner' is black but I am going to wire wheel it silver to match the top end. like the attached pic.

Maybe should have. Most everything Has been OEM, but in this case I got what I thought was a good deal on a Weisco piston kit. I sent it to Powerseal USA with my cylinder and it’s done and coming back. Piston is matched to my cylinder so I think it should be good... we’ll see

Great project. I got a free 1986 YZ125 a few weekend ago. It did not have much corrossion either. I have it running but it needs a lot of love. This thread is motivating. It has all original plastic with the exception of the rear fender. Here is mine:

For the record, this isn't my bike. I was just showing an example of how I wanted to treat the power valve/exhaust. But yea, its a gorgeous restore.

Keep posting the updates, Mark.

Thanks Brian. A lot of hours put into it, but it’s fun. I love seeing it coming to life. So you say FREE !!! That’s a great project Brian. I know pictures don’t tell the whole story, but that looks like a bike worth re-doing. If you start on it, keep us updated. That could be a great bike

I will Mark. I have another thread here on the forum for this one. It is a 1986 YZ125. I got it at the same time. It took it out riding yesterday.

All the '87 plastics are available, in the correct colour, from UFO. I wouldn't waste my time trying to restore the originals unless I was going for a full on, "as new, show-room floor" 100 point concourse restoration. And even then they would cost WAY more than a set of new ones from UFO!!

Thanks, but It’s not wasted time. I bought a UFO rear fender, and may buy more. That’s not the point of my restoration. Anybody can buy parts. I’m not just anybody. I take some pride in doing all this stuff... and I enjoy it. I can assure you this bike won’t be a show bike.., it will be raced

Got a nice Christmas present from Powerseal USA.....cylinder finally came back and it looks great. Ready for paint. Also finished up wrapping the silencer with new FMF packing and should be ready to install once the pipe is done.

I"m sure you know this, but clean that cylinder before use....I blow out all the holes with compressed air several times, wash cylinder in the sink with hot soapy water, use a toothbrush on all the ports, then blow it out again with air, then take a clean white rag with WD/40. And keep wiping the cylinder walls until the white rag comes out spotless....I just had an 89 CR 250 cylinder done by Powersealusa & the crud that came out of the threaded holes & ports will surprise you....

Good advice... it did come with a sheet of instructions to wash with soap and water and a few other things. I’ll clean it up good before going back with it. Looks like they did a good job though, so happy about that.

Sorry I missed that. Looks like UFO is the only choice. Partzilla does have the fenders in flash red.

UFO has nice aftermarket plastics. I had to order the rear fender and number plate in red orange and it matches perfect. I think that’s all I’ll need, but we’ll see after I get through sanding.
