Cr500 vs crf450

How do they compare in racing mx. like using Rory Sullivan cr 500 and a equivalently tricked crf450. does the 450 have a big advantage over the 500 if so what where and how?

The 450 has an advantage because it's slower, easier to control, and not as scary Laughing

It's really hard to compare because there isn't a true apples to apples comparison. The cr500 is an old bike so never mind the motor, the chassis just isn't up to snuff compared to a new crf450.

I've ridden a couple cr500s from the 80s along with some other 500s and the motors are fun because they have so much power you can short shift them more like a 4 stroke if you want to but they can be a handful. They can also be difficult to start, especially if they have a metal tank with the word husqvarna painted on it...

I think a 250 2 stroke is a lot more fun on a motocross track since the average mortal can't ride around the local track at a speed that a 500 smoker wants to sing at.

No. You can not race a 2 stroke larger than 250cc in the 450cc class. Dizzy

Besides the CC thing, bikes have to be production based and homologated for use in AMA professional competition, which that bike most certainly is not. Also, I think the rules state no bike more than 3 years old is allowed to compete at an AMA pro MX race.

Ive owned both. Completely different animals. I prefer steel frame 500's over any aluminum version. I would take a new CRF450 over any CR500. In the end you will own both. Just saying.

Not a CR but I raced a KX500 for a couple years recently. No thanks.
Yes, everyone should ride one at some point but holy hell, just too
hectic to ride. Fun for a while until you get tired and then, no fun.
It was like I had to train my ass off just to go ride a practice day at Pala.

Much happier and safer on my 450. (And I still have my KTM200 for two stroke fun.)

I raced the two off them for many years , in my opinion they are pretty close on how you ride them , neither one would turn real well , so you learn how to lug them through the corners , they both where a pain in the ass to start until you learned the trick , they both tend to use engine breaking , because the 500 was a bitch to get slowed down , you never used 1st gear , you rode the track pretty much 3-4 gear , the big difference was when you get tired the 500 had a way off sneaking up and biting you in the ass , where the last year I owned a 450 (08) I could get away with a lot more mistakes , on the 500 a mistake would wake you up real quick , I would tend to think that any one that raced open bikes for a long period off time felt right a home the first time they rode a 450 .

I always wanted to ride one that was balanced and blueprinted. Its like the white whale. Mystical and Fantastic. Always talked about and stories told but never got that chance.

And to the person that said no more than a 250... HA, go ride a stocker 500 and then a 250. Here's a test. Own one and never take a wrench to the case bolts if you are so confident. No lock tight allowed. Then tell us they don't vibrate more than a 250.

Don't know if you remember my 88 CR500 Honda that I raced through 94. I went from that to a 250 Honda and did not notice the vibration difference....not saying they don't vibrate more but just wasn't a factor for me. I also ran Pro Taper bars and a Scotts Steering Sabilizer on both bikes.

Mike did you put a flywheel weight on the 98? I know over the years they added a little bit of weight but I enjoyed riding my bike more (and stalled it less) after the flyweel weight.

How is Shaun doing?

currently in the process of restoring a 1989 cr 500- will be blueprinting the cases and balancing the crank, porting the cylinder and playing about with different squish/ pipe set ups to try and find a nice smooth, broad powerband...

it will be interesting to see how my laptimes compare to my 2015 350 - sometimes I race a pre 89 'evo' class on the same day as the normal 'A' class on my modern bike, so a back to back comparison on the same track/ same conditions/ same day will be good to see!! Normally when I race my 87 cr 250 on the same day as my 350 i'm around 5 seconds a lap (sometimes a bit more dependant on track conditions) slower than I am on the new bike. I'm guessing the 500 will be a little more competitive. The difficult thing will be getting the suspension and brakes to perform like a modern one. That's the really noticeable difference from the 350 to the 87 250, the 350 brakes and suspension are far superior, which they should be on a 30 year newer bike!!!!

I'm in the process of putting a 87 CR500 motor into a 07 RMZ250.Evil One of the best handling 250-4T bikes made. I'll upgrade the brakes, suspension for my weight, and the real trick to using a 500-2T, is a moderate flywheel weight so it hooks up better and limits wheel spin, and keeps it from rushing through the powerband. I'll post more when I have it on it's wheels. 500-2T's are not for everyone. Riding should be fun, and that's why I also have an RM125, just for giggles.Tongue

Actually, most of the new users are not able to access or handle all the operations of Electric Toothbrush as there may have several restrictions. They will definitely get an actual solution suggested by best electric toothbrush that will be fruitful for solving their issues easily.

I think a closer comparison would be KTM BRC 500 to a 450. Counter balanced 500 cc 2 stroke power valved engine in an updated current model steel frame.

I'm just finishing a 2017 CRF 450 Conversion (98 CR 500 engine in a 2017 CRF 450 Frame) I'll let you know once I ride and race it. Motor is in the frame, suspension is complete, just need to finish the new airbox. I owned a 2008 CRF 450 Conversion before this and loved it. Wanted to upgrade to a new chassis to match my 2018 CRF 450. Done right they are excellent bikes and tons of fun to ride!

Are there still people who think that a CR500 is faster?, in early '90 the 250 2T proof they where faster to ride.
Come on there is 25 years development between them.
My SXF450 had on the Dyno 57,8 HP and a much wider powerband compare to a CR.
I don't think a standard CR has much more HP, google it.
There is more myth than realism of the CR500,
Oké it's has the most beautiful sound on the track and good memories but that's all.
And if you're faster on a CR than on a CRF you are doing something wrong.

Your SXF doesn't have 45-50 ft lbs of torque that's what makes the 500
