Anyone know why amatuer mx is not going to use transponders any longer?

Was really nice to watch results lap-by-lap from work!

We were told @ the SE Regional the amateur motocross (nationals, regionals, ect.) will not be using transponders any longer. They were buying them back for $20.00.

By nationals the probably meant the Amateur nationals.

They were absent from this years LL regional qualifiers and LL website has no info about it for this year.

Amsoil to sponsor live results for Loretta's.
For the second year in a row, Amsoil will sponsor the live timing and results for the AMA Amateur National Championships at Loretta Lynn's ranch. This means racers will be get all lap times from practice and from racing at no charge at the event. Better yet, all the fans at home will be able to watch the live results by clicking the link above. In 2007, the live results site received over 10 million hits during the 5 days of racing.

New Transponder to be used at Loretta's.
Trackside Software is proud to work with MX Sports by providing the official scoring for the 2008 AMA Amateur National Championships. Trackside will introduce an all new transponder designed specifically for motocross at the event. More info

Reserve a Transponder for Loretta's.
All racers will be required to rent a transponder for the 2008 AMA Amateur National Championships. The transponders are not for sale as this is their initial release. Rental cost is $30 along with a $100 deposit. Full deposit is returned when transponder is returned at the event. Reserve Transponder

Word in the beginning of the year was the new transponders were to be somewhat like the pros use. It would have cost around $230.00 to buy. I'm guess the ensueing uproar of parents not wanting to dish out the $$ changed all that.....but who knows.
They were supposed to be the ones you mount on the forks (which would require most to buy 2!!!)

I believe you probably heard about these. There's been some discussion about them here in New England where some tracks use transponders now. Concerns were over cost, number needed if running multiple bikes as you point, as well as the fact that they need to be charged/recharged.

Darrell!! Getting around the moto web I see.

The big stink and probable reason why you may have heard that there would be "no more transponders" was because a company has been trying to force the use of the more expensive units by buying and destroying the cheaper units. Quite a few tracks were looking at dropping them rather than charge the riders almost triple the cost for the new units.

The folks at Trackside were able to negotiate a deal better units which are what they will be using at LL's this year. Here it is...


Slightly larger than the older version but no need to re-charge like the other companies product and much better price.

I raced a hairscramble event a month or so ago and they had small ound ones that you zip tied onto your chest protector, you paid $20 and you keep it all season, should you run the full season. Seems like they should be able to do it easy.

I have that one as well. Makes you wonder what's up!


You could even see your position and lap time as you came through the scoring gate.

Damn 1400 riders at 100 a piece deposit. Need a Brinks truck to haul that out.

MX Spurts, aka Morgantown Mafia, told someone they would be out of business if they used the transponders anywhere but LL's.

That was passed on to RT through a third party so no direct contact was made, for fear of Octopus dirty tricks/retribution. Check on it yourselves. Sounds like Morgantown Mafia typical bullshit.

timing loops cost peanuts. Don't see what the big deal is. I have one on my own practice track, we just use the AMB transponders we have for our national championships, link it up to my laptop and hey presto, we can keep tabs on our moto times. piece of piss really. Cool

AMB-iT is the old name of MyLaps. Trackside was bought by My Laps. The new transponders are all subscription based. The older ones you charge them and they work at tracks that use the MyLaps / AMB decoder with wire Loop in the track. The $20 transponders or the ones you stick to your visor are not the MyLaps / Trackside system. They are usually RFI systems which do not work very well on motocross.

I just bought the "latest" transponder last year, Tried to renew my subscription this year and it wouldn't let me. I guess I know why now. Complete bullshit and I just paid $125 for it and they want to buy it back for $20. Kiss my ass. I'm getting about tired of the mafia tactics.

Ill never stop riding, but I think our racing days are just about done other than at the local level. Its becoming a power trip for certain people and none of the changes are for the "good" of the sport. Only for certain peoples pockets.

I just bought a MYLAPS X2. I started racing REM and they use Glen Helens transponders but the transponders are dying. GH doesn't want to buy and supply transponders so REM is asking people to buy their own. I bought a 2 year subscription so we will see how it goes.

Mine is something like 10 years old Grinning best $20 ever spent. Although admittedly I havent raced a SORCS event in a few years.
