The XL's (OK L/X) HP and weight will keep it from being a cost effective way to own a true street legal Motocrosser track weapon.

I suspect the XL will make a very dirt capable long lasting smooth feeling ADV bike with some proper (aftermarket?) mounts for bags (and rear pegs) it will hit a niche that hasn't been filled too well, a reliable low maintenance Thumper for crossing continents. It's most important advancements may be the foam filled swingarm and the sound deadening engine cases.
Good Points!
Also, the X is a different version of this motor: more power, no catalytic converter, weighs a lot less...and it’s a dedicated Baja weapon.

This one will be doing a “Bay Area” street run tomorrow...then Hollister Hills on Sunday...
Then it’s off to Baja Designs for a dedicated head light for serious off-roading.

Oh, bye the way...the stock headlight on this thing is the best stock head-light I've ridden with...I was able to put in some good “Night Miles” in the Shasta National Forest. The Baja Designs light will be necessary for proper Baja 1000 pre-running.

I'll be in Hollister hills Sunday morning riding a CR2 2t. I'll looking out for you..
I'd be Interested in checking this bike out. The last time I rode an enduro was a couple of cousins 74 XL100 in the late 70's & his brothers 82 XL125 in the early 80's..
BTW - I don't expect to ride the bike if it's going to be there just wanted to see it up close..

Last month a guy at Huntington Honda said they were going to charge $14K for one of these very "versatile" scooters.

Is that right? That would be hard to swallow.

Remember kids, the reality is dirt bikes make lousy street bikes and vice versa, and "Dual Sport" is neither...

Excuse the lack of knowledge, but with a pipe and mapping (All adhering to California's very strict, logical and no nonsense omission standards (sarcasm)), couldn't they benefit a real pep in the step? Are they detuned too far with low compression?

So... My buddy got one a month ago. He has about 800 miles on it.

He has been pulled over 5 times so far, never a ticket, just a pull over to "check things out". He is seriously getting tired of it. Two weekends ago he got pulled over going into a gas station, then pulled over 100 feet after pulling out of the same station by a different cop.

Just a heads up................

I kid you guys not. Back in the day, when Bultacos and CZs were the hot setup, there was this guy that used to show up at local AMA dist 7 Motocross events. His name was Vernon. He would ride his Kawasaki Bighorn to the track.
They were I think 350 cc 2strokes, Enduro models. Might even have had autolube injection, didn't have to mix the gas.

He would take the lights off, run top 4 or 5, sometimes run up front even, in the open class.

End of the day, while everyone else was loading bikes into pickups and vans, he'd be putting his lights back on.

And then ride 40 or 50 miles home. True story.
Jim pomeroy used to win the pro class in sunnyside wa on a old suzuki with blinkers and a horn! He would go into the corners and hit the blinker and honk at slower riders

I converted my CRF450 to be a street legal supermoto back in about 2007. First test ride with light and a plate I was pulled over within 5 minutes of being on the road. The officer said she figured it was stolen bike for sure, but when she saw the paperwork and the lights/signals/plate/etc. she sent me on my way with a "that's a pretty cool bike".

I know this guy who knows a lot about making Honda's go fast, and he just got one to play around with in his spare time and after one decent ride, he's already looking at a few bits mentioned. I wouldn't be suprised if there is a Vortex ECU out soon enough that delivers a lot more. He's also looking to junk a lot of unnecessary things like thermostat etc.

Thermostats are not junk, I just added one to my 19 FX. Best mod I've ever done to a bike, makes a difference when the temperature drops below 50°F.

There's no pipe that works on the Cat-Converter equipped CRF-L...for now. If a person REALLY wanted to make it "tunable", you'll need to swap out the "black box" for an X model's and I believe there's a main-harness change, too. The pins/connectors on the L are different and that's to keep you from messing with it.

I know some have been critical of the 38 hp number, but on the exact same dyno a 18 CRF250R made 36 and a 19 CRF450R made 53. So that’s actually pretty dang good considering it’s an emissions compliant bike.

I want one. A Rally version would be awesome.

I believe there is a pipe, Yosh, FMF, both will work, but you need the Vortex to use them

Yeah in those extreme cases. Helps regulate coolant flow and and running temperature and warms up the engine faster to achieve more complete combustion and better emission levels. Wouldn't be required in the warmer months or states.

That's my point: you'll need to change a lot more than just the pipe. It's not an inexpensive thing to do. A pipe that could work with the stock ignition/map could be made...but, it will be an "L ONLY" pipe. No-one's done that...that I've seen, yet. The FMF & Yoshimura pipes are for the X.
