I'm back! Absolutely NO issues in the transmission or motor. They have one final thing they are doing tomorrow that they have little faith in but going to cross it off the list. If that doesn't work there is going to be some serious actions that the dealer and myself will be taking against Yamaha. This entire process has been close to a month now and Yamaha and been very uncooperative. I am just one person, but one person that has bought three new bikes in the last three years. Along with up-selling four other customers to brand new Yamaha's. Very dissatisfied. Another racer in my local community is also trading in his 2018 YZ450F for another brand. He has had numerous problems completely unrelated to the ones I'm having.

Please describe the event better.

Slipping? like a car with a slipping clutch, it rev's but no forward motion is gained.

Skipping, like the kill button was tapped. Skipping would feel as though it died for a split second.

Please elaborate, it's been a month since you felt it.

I took this video when I got it back last week when they swapped all the electrical. You can hear the noise very easily.

Wow, that is crazy. Now i understand why they can't find the problem. If it only does it under a load it might be hard to find the bad part. Does not SOUND like transmission.
Sounds like a pressed on gear is spinning for a second? I took a look at the parts diagrams and I would have them double check the gears on the starter clutch and damper assembly. It must be something slips under heavy load. Look for a gear pressed on where you can't see any problem. Like a cam gear that spun, you can't tell it spun, it doesn't leave any marks when it spins. Is there a pressed on gear they are missing because it looks good? Sometimes when you press the gear off you can see where the gear was spinning.

There is a gear spinning on a shaft that should not spin. You might not see the problem until you press the gear off whatever shaft it is? The trans does not look like it has any pressed on gears. Look for a drive gear in the system that is pressed on? I only see pressed on gears for the starter clutch? The gear will not spin in your hand, it will take huge pliers to try and spin in a vice, or match the foot pounds of torque the YZ puts out in 3rd.

My call is a pressed on gear is spinning under a load. I am not sure how the starter clutch works in the 18 yamaha.
I would put the starter clutch and damper in some aluminum vice jaws and see if any pressed on gears spin with some huge channel locks. Does not make sense it only happens in 3rd?

Hope they figure it out, must be stressful for everyone involved.

I believe the starter clutch is something they are looking into today as well as an in depth more look at the launch control.

Funny enough you should mention that. This is the problem that the other rider in my local community had. Over a grand to replace that was covered by Yamaha/dealer. He only put a few hours on the bike after they replaced it and now the bike won't start at all cold/hot unless the choke is on. Runs like shit and the valves are completely in spec.

Sorry for your bad luck. Based on your description I thought for sure tranny since my 2 smoker did the same thing when new. Haven't seen your video since I am on a work computer- but will check it out tonight. Keep on the dealer and keep calling corporate until you get someone willing to help!!! Good Luck!

Not a thing from Yamaha yet. Words can't describe my frustration and dissapointment with them. The local shop has taken it upon themselves to literally swap everything from a completely brand new bike onto mine trying to resolve the issue. I am completely screwed no matter what I do at this point. I can't even trade it in for something else because of this issue, and even if I did I would be taking such a financial hit it wouldn't even be funny.

It's going to end up being something small and stupid. That's how it always works

Yamaha has dropped a whole new motor in my bike. That fixed the problem lol. The original motor is going back to be pulled apart and diagnosed.

Even though they took a bit, and I’m sure that was protocol, can’t argue with them giving you a new motor. That’s pretty decent customer service.

Good friend of mine Coty Schock just roached his trans today for the second time on his practice bike. His race bike trans went while qualifying for Red Bud. Both 2018 Yamaha 450’s practice bike went at approx 10 hours and 3 hours after the rebuild. Race bike trans went at approx 8 hours
