Holy crap, Hondas finally coming out with black rims now! This is a massive win for all the people saying they want black rims on Honda! Only took them like what? 10 years?

Wonder if the launch control can be programmed in an 18? Sure would like to have that!

That would be bad ass and I’d probably have to have one, assuming it is mechanically identical to a 1980.
My buddy and I would do speed checks every now and then. Why? Because his CT-70 had a speedometer. I'd be out a little bit ahead on my XR-75 (on a down hill ~ 1/8th mile dirt road), but we had to get on the binders kinda of early so we didn't get out into any cross-traffic on the main road. We'd swap bikes too, to verify. We got that speedometer up to 46mph before slamming on both brakes! Great fun. We were 11. Laughing

Now I get why they sent Short over to Husqvarna/KTM to spy for them.

That is some funny shit Harry. Yamaha 60s, XR75s, 74 YZ80s, Tuff Skins, stuck throttles, and chains across the road. I had fun with all those things except the chain across the road.

I had just finished up building my side hack bicycle. Every weekend we would ride our bikes down to the main Blvd in town where all the Motorcycle shops were at. Sit on the bikes and bug the sales guys until they gave us free stickers to go away.
There was a large parking lot next to a music store outlined with metal poles and chain in between. For years there was one spot with no chain between the poles that had a perfect ramp to launch your Stingray.
I did the usual drill of pedal wide open, quick look over left shoulder for traffic, then swing out to the center of the Blvd and cut back hard right to line up in between the poles. About 10 feet from the jump, WTF barbeb wire ? Only had time to raise my arms to protect my face and neck. Hit two rows of wire full tilt. Was laying on the ground tangled in barbeb wire with side hack on top of me scared to death because I got it right in the neck and pretty sure I was gong to die right there. As I'm lying there this old lady walks by me 10 feet away. I'm moaning help, help. She didn't even look at me. Just walked right by.
My buddies got me untangle and kept telling me I was fine. I knew they were lying because my arm was tore open in a few places and blood was all over my shirt from my neck. Called my Mom and she came down in the 53' VW converible. Put the side hack in the back seat, went home and got fixed up.
Went to school Monday and my teacher asked what happened. She said it looked like I got stang led by barbed wire. I told her I rode my bike into barbed wire. She thought there was some kind of foul play going on so I had to get my buddies to back up my story.

Harry, did your Mom put those iron on patches on your Tuff Skins whene you blew the knees out?
I hated those things. If they were on the outside they peeled up and looked even more ridiculous. If the were on the inside they scrapped on your knees.
Heck yeah, Broseph! She did indeed put the iron-on patches on my SEARS TUFF SKINS!! To be honest, I'm not really sure what happened to the TUFF SKINS I was wearing that day. I think the knees were just so blown out as to be "unpatchable."

Haha! Cool story man. I'm surprised that back then a lady walked by and managed to ignore you.

They should bring back the trail 70 (or was it a 50? My memory aint what it used to be). That was a fun machine and introduced thousands of people to riding back in the 70s. Not me as I was introduced to riding on a Yamaha 60. It had a red fuel tank and a black seat. Also got to ride a Sears mini-bike a neighbor had. That thing was fun. They were all fun though if you stop and think about it. My greatest thrill though was my best buddies XR75. That thing had some torque for us little kids. I remember meeting him in Mr. Woods woodshop class (yes, that was really his name - talk about being born into the job). Anyhow, he told me he had an XR75. Well, being in 7th grade and all when kids say stuff you sometimes figure they are just blowing smoke, but it turned out he lived just a couple of blocks away so I went over there after school and sure enough! He did have an XR75. It even said "XR75" on the side plates! So to show him I too was a dirt bike riding stud, I took all my birthday money from years of saving and bought 1974 YZ80. See, grandma and grandpa and aunts and uncles and mom and dad would always chuck a few bucks into your birthday cards back then. My mom would confiscate most of it and save it. So I begged her for that money and she gave in. I had like almost $500! So I bought the YZ80. That thing was a pig from hell. My buddies XR75 blew it away when we'd drag race up and down Jack's Ranch Road. Even back then though I wanted to learn how to be a dirt bike mechanic so I took it all apart and put it all back together again. I only made two key errors - lessons I will never forget. Back in those days you were able to put the carb slide in backwards. I managed to do that and the dang thing would not start. So I ran it down the driveway and bump started it. Apparently the best way to make a 74 YZ80 go fast is to put the carb slide in backwards. That thing took off down the street with me hanging on for dear life. When I bump started it I didn't throw my legs over the seat. I jumped on "side-saddle." Big mistake. Now my Sears Tuff Skins were the only thing between my knees and the asphalt. Worse, the bike was wide open and absolutely screaming. I finally laid it over and stared, stupified, at the screaming machine as visions of the piston shooting out of the head and through the fuel tank danced upon my shocked brain. I limped over to the bike and...can you guess? Grabbed the spark plug cap and yanked with all my might. Holy smokes did I get a shock! I recommend never doing that. The other thing I did was I forgot to torque the sprocket bolts. Now, don't get me wrong. I didn't have a torque wrench back in those days. I just didn't tighten them. So now that my YZ was dead in the street, it was then that I noticed the sprocket had flung out the bolts and broken the rear hub. The sprocket had climbed several inches up the swing arm and chewed that up along with the rim and spokes. The whole thing was a smoking pile. To top it all off, my sweet pair of red Sears Tuff Skins were shredded, my knees were bleeding, my knuckles were scraped, the left grip was torn off along with the clutch lever looking like a "J." I'm sure there was more damage, but that was along time ago and I don't remember everything. Besides, my hair was standing straight up from the shock the bike delivered. My little brother thought that whole episode was the best entertainment he'd ever seen. So anyway, Peelout Bro is 100% correct about making sure those sprocket bolts are snugged down tight. So before I did all that though, I was riding behind the high school on that YZ (because all the other kids did that) and it was late one evening. I'm tooling along feeling like a real moto stud when I see it. "It" was a chain stretched across the dirt road to keep us kids from riding behind the high school. Now mind you, this was an "official" chain. This was not set up from some environmental nut-ball with an axe to grind against us bad-ass moto-studs...this was a chain between two steel poles set into the ground with concrete by some enterprising high-school muckity-muck. Alas, it was too late. I was going pretty fast - at least third gear! The sun was low behind me setting over the sierras and I saw the chain too late. I was able to lay the bike on its side just as I passed under the chain. The chain caught my right handlebar just below the throttle assembly and launched the entire throttle to somewhere out in the desert, continued on under my right arm and caught me in the right chest. I managed to get up, but man was I hurtin'. I felt like I'd hit a chain stretched across a road! You can imagine that feeling. Somehow, in this woozy state and my ribs feeling like they were blown out, I managed to get up. Now it was really getting dark. Somehow, and I know you're going to think I'm making this up, I managed to get the bike started, and ride it home PULLING on the shredded throttle cable end that was exposed when the throttle assembly got flung off. So anyhow, yeah, I hope Honda makes a cool dirt bike again someday. I always wanted to do one of these annoying walls of text - hoping that other "wall o' text" writers will get a freaking clue about how annoying these walls of texts can be. Hey, at least I have taken the time to use punctuation some "wall o' text" writers write sentences like this one I'm writing now with no commas no thought to spelling or grammar and the sentence runs on so long it could become its own paragraph and it just all becomes practically incomprehensible if you know what I mean?
Without a doubt that's one of the best sentences I've read on here. Tongue

I hate black rims. They are overdone and boring to see now. Cool 10 years ago when only a few people had them.

No spoke skins? I thought black rims had to go with spoke skins. Where's the spoke skins?

Whats the best way to take the black coating off the rims of most of the new bikes?

No doubt about it, Henbrory. Thank God there was nothing like that back then. However, I do kind of wish it had been recorded. It's funny to relive that experience in my mind. Now. Wasn't funny at all when it happened. You know, to this day I can't remember what I did with that 74 YZ80. Probably just junked it after that.
