Here are two scary quotes that draw some comparisons to current amateur motocross:

"The sport alienated and priced its hardcore fans out of attendance."

*Moto Comparison: Four-strokes, four-stroke hop-ups & maintenance, entry-fees several times higher than in the 1990s, ect.

"The drivers are all cookie-cutter just like the tracks. Either rich kids whose dads bought their ride or the sons of former drivers who look and sound more like boy-band pitchmen than race car drivers."

*Moto Comparison: Amateur racers who are well-financed via parents and/or sponsorship have a huge advantage, greater than in the two-stroke/no training camp era. The tracks that are ripped, watered, and full of supercross-style jumps are cookie-cutter in a sense. It seems the powers in play want to standardize the tracks and get away from natural dirt and natural terrain. This in theory would give well-financed riders at training facilities an advantage.

This is just an observation and my opinion. But there may be some truth to this, and maybe we can learn from a sport that is losing popularity. Going back to two-strokes and true amateur racing (no financial compensation aside from bikes/parts/lubes/gear, just doing Loretta's in the summer, kids in school being kids and not at training camps) would be nice, but it's not going to happen. That is unless in time there aren't enough paying participants to support the industry, leading to collapse and no resources left for elite amateur racers.

I agree with this 100%.

Not a Chase fan either, but for some reason NHRA series seems to have not been sidetracked. When they first announced their Chase, I was not looking forward to it. But, as the years have gone by, it really hasn't been too much of the story. You still get mano a mano matchups or very often la mano a la mano matchups. There are a lot of story lines and "characters" that you learn more about throughout the season. Keeps you tuned in, but also still has a lot of gearhead stuff too. A lot of interviews with Crew Chiefs, past champions, stuff going on in the pits etc. etc. A motor blowing up or 3 (John Force this season) doesn't hurt either.

Speaking of NHRA. How does a sport with million dollar machines allow full pit access with the price of admission and not have problems and yet SX treats its fans like we are sub human when it comes to pit access?

And for anyone that has not attended a NHRA event I would highly suggest trying it just once, and take anyone you know as I’m sure they will all be impressed. Watching a car go from 0-330 MPH in 4 seconds is something that will amaze you. If you are anywhere near them when they take off they make every organ in your body shake
I used to go to the pits at the Mile-High Nationals and loved when they started up the nitro cars. You can truly FEEL the power! ..and smell it...'til your eyes burn!!

The price more than doubled but ?oval hotels tripled and had 3 nice minimum.

Then they moved races from historic tracks .

The sport went bad before the chase.

And,you'd think NASCAR would not look for more things to do to make fans hate them. Then they mandate impact guns.

Sure, teams budgeted a million for them, made them on CNC and had them trick as trick gets.

Now they are junk. Run on air instead of nitrogen and have a shitty hose and regulator.

Teams with money are gonna win no matter what.
Impact gun?

My first passion was drag racing. Raced jr dragster since I was 8. I recommend going to a nhra national event not nearly as expensive and you can walk right next to the top teams. Supercross is 4x more expensive the promoters are definitely taking a lot of money. Unless they have to pay a crazy amount for the stadium.

That's a good point. Unless you know someone it's impossible to get into the SX pits after the race. At NHRA events we always give used up parts to the kids so they have a souvenir from the race. It's almost like winning the lottery to get a number plate from a supercross team. Kinda shitty.

Yeah I don’t know when it got to the point where motorcycle riders/teams decided it would be good business to shut the fans out. After all it is the fans that pay their salaries. No fans...no SX...no $$$

I stopped following NASCAR when they started the chase format. I will do the same if SX goes to the chase format. Why watch races that do not matter?

Cars with no personality, most drivers have no personality. It's not what NASCAR once was. I go back and watch old 70's and 80's and even some 90's races on Youtube, to me those are more exciting to watch. I still watch NASCAR but only tune in to see the last 10 laps or so. I went to Fontana and enjoyed it but watching on TV not as much.

Even NASCAR doesn't call it "The Chase" anymore. Why can't people here let that term go?

It doesn't matter what it is, could be sports, music, fashion, food etc., if something is underground or not mainstream and is tried to be made mainstream it will lose it's original appeal. It will become watered down for the masses which will eventually make the original fans go away and sooner or later the noobs will move on to the next cool thing leaving no one left to support it. People are always trying to turn things into something it isn't to make a buck.

Regarding Nascar, there is a road course near me called Watkins Glen International. The Nascar race every year draws massive crowds. They won't give actual numbers but track president said 95,000 last year. Used to hear rumors years ago about them wanting a MX National. It would be nothing like Utah and I think it would actually be good. Used to be a mx track near the back of WGI. It was cool to hear all the different cars.

How did the crowd seem at Fontana? Hard to find the numbers but it looked packed, at least in the main stands.

I have to get over there sometime. Drove all the way to Talledega but won’t make the 90 min drive to Fontana for some reason

You know It doesn’t really matter what us forum members want, it’s uo to the guys making all the money who are promoting the races and I’m pretty sure if they think it will bring in more $$$ then SX is going to go to a format similar to NASCAR in the near future. It’s all about the $$ amd they know a lot more about how to make them then we do

I quit watching when they went to cookie cutter cars. (long time ago) I liked seeing what advances the engineers could come up with and if one had an edge sobe it, the next year the others could adapt with a new car. Manufactures also lost interest at this time because there was no longer brand recognition. I also hate the chase.

The main stands in the middle of the finish straight were mainly full. But there were plenty of seats not spoken for down in turn 1 and turn 4. It wasn't a full house by any means. But there were more fans in the seats than in recent past years. Overall crowds around the concession area and under and in front of the main stands were crowded prior to the race start. Lots of fans with NASCAR merchandise for them and their children.

The "chase" or "play-offs" have nothing to do with Nascar's decline. It has to do with high ticket prices, boring 1.5 mile tracks, "dirty air" giving leader a huge advantage, and younger people not watching TV any more!

The 1.5 mile tracks need to be turned into road race tracks, the Charlotte Fall race will be the 1st one this year. The teams will be testing the course tomorrow, should make for much more exciting racing!

One name makes NHRA better than any other motosport for me....John Force. I watch the entire program in the hopes that I'll get to hear a 20sec sound byte from that wound up old bastard. MX needs a guy like that.

It is boring as hell to watch, I agree with that. Kinda like the St Louis race that was on last night.

One thing that may change your mind is trying someday to drive one of those cars in a circle. It’s not that easy....ask Juan Pablo Montoya or Dario Franchitti.

I had a buddy who raced locally at Irwindale in the Sportsman series. It may look easy but believe me when I tell you there is a lot more to it than turning left. It’s kinda like SX....sure looks easy on TV. I have newbies watch SX with me and they are like “oh so this is what u did when u were younger”
I’m like oh yeah...that’s just like what I did Smile

Do not get me wrong, I go to Pocono every year and have a blast. I just liked it better when there was some separation between the car manufactures. It just feels like a spec series now. I have driven all kinds of dirt oval cars, some of the most fun I have ever had behind the wheel. The 600 sprints are an absolute blast to drive. I really want to drive a 410 powered car someday...

I think the car of tomorrow hurt it bad.
Is that the car that had that stupid dam giant wing on the back? I thought that was the dumbest move ever. I really enjoy the short tracks and I assume everyone else does by the sellouts every year so what’s NASCAR do, ignor those and build boring ass super speedways like California and Vegas that they can’t give away tickets to. I think overall the SX tracks are good but need more difficulty maybe like East Ruthaford last year, but I don’t know what you could really do when a freak of nature like Tomac goes wild and makes the rest of the field look like c group qualifying.
