MXGP: 40 riders
MX2: 40 riders
EMX300: 50 riders
EMX125: 92 riders

Might be something to consider for the people that still think the GPs have 20 riders on the gates.

Hsu and Pootjes both seem to have peaked early , they were supposed to be the next Roczen and Herlings , but expectations were high , and they both failed to reach potential . Conrad Mewse is another one who has struggled after being factory for so long, but he looks to have steadied the ship a little. Hopefully they can all be the riders they promised to be.

Michele Cervellin will be out too with a knee injury he sustained in the second moto in Argentina. He expects to be back at RedSand.

How come having qualifying is OK for EMX but they won’t do it for the GP classes...?

Because it would suck if a contender would have a crash or blow a bike and not qualify because of it.

Just kidding, I have no idea honestly. But I do know that there would be more than 40 guys lining up this weekend if they would allow it.

They scrapped it because in years gone by they couldn't get 30 entries, let alone enough to have qualifying. Now they do, on occasion, get more than 40 entries why not swallow their pride and allow qualification?

And if your favourite rider crashes out or DNF's then tough shit. Go to the LCQ like in EMX.

Track is deep and wet at the moment as you guys can see. Wonder How it will turn out with the cold weather What is coming up, this wet ground will be frozen pretty fast....

What class is Emil Weckman in now?

I think last year he passed up the ( 2?- he won the 150F class twice, if I recall correctly) Honda backed EMX250 rides for the Suzuki 125. It seemed so bizzare. I know he is (was? - has he 'sprouted' and become the usual giant Scandinavian?) a tiny little bloke, but seemingly walking away from what looked like a hell of a deal(s), was strange.

I think MBR here was a backer of his. I'd like to see a Fast Finn out there winning, and Emil looked to be a great prospect to be just that for the future.

I'm caught up with a mates wedding this entire weekend, so will be playing catch up Monday on Valkenswaard.

How is someones favorite rider important in discussing fields and qualifying?

Trying to make it personal? For what?

It wasn't personal. Sorry if it sounded like that.

A wet , muddy track , not good conditions for Herlings home GP.
Simpson, Anstie and Searle have their names written all over this Wink

It was Biderella , not me!

I've been to Valkenswaard several times, as well as many other GPs. Valkenswaard could handle plenty of rain normally, but if it's (the ground base) currently frozen a few inches down, it will be a bloody nightmare. And / or worse if the temperature drops / or it snows.

Fear and Loathing, I reckon.

Either way, it's going to be Real Motocross, not some plowed and pampered chocolate cake course, or overgrown , vicious BMX track.

Rob :

With your being a GP rider in the past, could you shed some light on the Entry fees for riders charged in your times, with comparison to what's charged now?

I suspect it might be pretty bloody expensive today, even when compared in 'real' terms.

I don't know the exact amount, but I think I've seen it being well, well over a Thousand Euros to enter an MX2 / MXGP now. Except when Luongo feels the need to get riders out there (Overseas rounds) and he / Youthstream 'massage' the entry fees.

No start money - though I'm not sure if that happened with GPs - maybe just Internationals / other big races - and, certainly, No prize payout now.

Were Top Ten (or some other number) riders given a 'protected' status in GPs years ago?

I've never really seen the entry fees for the various EMX classes - I'd bet they are not low.

Just questions I've gone really 'fuzzy' on as I get older.

Entry fee in my day was zero. Nowadays, (last I heard) it's €1,000 for a wild card or €10,000 for a season entry.

Back in the eighties you were paid 700 Swiss francs start money if you qualified at GPs, nothing if you didn't. Plus prize money for each moto on top of that - back to 25th place in each moto.

Top eight in points didn't have to qualify.

Entry fees in EMX, I believe, are €300.

Pootjes just keeps on getting injured. And when he isn't injured he is having issues, like now with arm pump.
He got a 3rd at the Dutch Masters last week, but in the interview after the race he sounded like a guy who doesnt have confidence right now/is fed up with issues.

Important year for him, KTM contract ends at the end of this year.

I think the track is covered in snow right now, this is a picture at my home nearby Valkenswaard this morning.Shocked
It is freezing cold, windy and still snowing.

Yeah he hasn’t grown much. Wait for the races, I think we will see him out front some this year. It’s his last year on a 125 because he will age out and has to move to EMX250.

And I believe (and hope) the Honda Cup is done forever.

I told the guys I know racing this weekend over there to take winter tires and hand warmers with them to gain an edge but we laughed it off. Should have taken it seriously though Laughing

Yes, the 'Honda Cup' was a farce - and I've repeatedly given my reasons for feeling so many times on this site.. And, it certainly is gone , now.

But, there were certainly some very real benefits for the Riders, Parents and Teams that participated in it.

Emil Weckman won that Championship , at least once, and I think twice.

The 'Prize' for winning it was a years support on an EMX250 Honda Team - a heck of a thing to not take up.

I knew he was a tiny little bloke, and it's been confirmed he still is, so a(nother) 125 campaign is entirely logical.

But, does anyone know if he still has the opportunity to step into the EMX250 Honda 'prize', when he leaves the 125s, or has he lost that ride?
