Incredible story..
I was there that day. I was standing next to Mcgrath while Art Eckman was interviewing him.

Awesome read. I wonder if modern works suspension would have made a diff in his injury. I’m saying no way. But made me wonder.

Was there also. Saw it from the hill across the track.
That jump, to me was always kinda deceiving.
It doesn't look big coming up on it.
Not like the man made stuff anyway.
It's like the track just falls away from underneath you.
Real easy to find yourself in an o crap situation, even just takin it easy.
At speed, jeez.

Another thing about that day, were those 2 250s MCGrath and Henry were on.
Those had to be the the pinnacle of 2 stroke motocross at the time.
The 4s, they were right around the corner, they were the future.
Some say, the R&D money was already going there.

Those bikes, those 250s, were simply the baddest motocross bikes I ever saw.
They even sounded different.
They kinda barked. Never heard a 2s before or since then, sound like they did.

Ahhh... gotcha. I'm gonna watch that now. I took a break from moto for a couple of years right about the time that the Crusty vids were big and must have missed terrafirma. Thanks.

I remember watching that race countless times on VHS as a teen. Recorded everything back then. Couldn't believe he launched it off that....

Snoqualimie,

Thanks so much for posting the link to that. It's funny, I wrote that story three years ago and it first appeared in the print magazine.

As gut wrenching of a tale as it is, I love writing stuff like that, trying to find out every detail about a single moment in time.

A little behind the scenes info: The interviews with Stacey and Doug were done in CT, in person, together, over a bottle of wine. 20 years later and their memories of the day were so, so strong.

I have another project coming up that I'm taking a similar approach with.

Thanks again,

Brett

Great piece of writing there. That was a moment in moto history that I'll never forget. I was just telling my kid about this a couple of months ago. Doug Henry is a true legend and one bad mofo.

Yes, Terrafirma 1 is the video. Scrub to the end. It's the last video part. The AIC album was Jar Of Flies and the song is "Nutshell". They also had a '93 MX recap video set to AIC's "Them Bones" off the album Dirt. It was awesome.

Thanks for the info. I can get lost in AIC and watching old race footage.
