What happened to the live helmet cams?

If I remember correctly there were some live helmet cams in use a two, or maybe three years ago in SX, that were used in the broadcast. Pretty cool feature if you asked me. Do you know what happened to these and why they're not in use anymore? Is it because those were not gopro's maybe? Not sure what brand it was...

I was just thinking that this weekend. I remember RC running it in SX 2005, and as recent as a few years ago. That'd be awesome to have the split screen with the spider cam on a battle, and one of the riders wearing a live helmet cam.

I think MX vs ATV bought out all the rights to show any FPV of the track. At least that is what it seems. We get a full lap with commentary in FPV in MX vs ATV, but they will show maybe half a lap on a go-pro. It's so dumb. I want to see and hear what the riders see and hear. They also said they would have live heart rate monitoring this year and they have barely shown that. They really need to use the LitPro, heart rate monitors, and gopro or FPV footage. They have all this technology and would rather show you a video game layout of the track that looks nothing like race day conditions. I could rant about this all day....

Not sure how much its evolved but it sounds fairly out there that a streaming helmet cam will send out HD video to the broadcast booth wirelessly quick enough to match the other cameras.

They have it in F1, MotoGP and other forms of motorsport. Why would this tech be unavailable for MX/SX?

And while we are at cheap technology, what about helmet to pit communication?

Clearly you all haven't watched race day live? Feld is on the stream struggle bus. Can't imagine how poorly a live helmet cam would be

Exactly, but why? I understand that 30 years ago it was cost prohibitive, but now? Any 10 year old could do it with a cell phone and bluetooth. https://readwrite.com/2012/05/23/5-push-to-talk-apps-that-turn-your-sma…

I'd imagine to repress the sophistication of "team tactics" versus "just racing".

I cant imagine even hearing a radio or conciously understanding the words while racing sx.

You could if your whole job as 2nd or 3rd guy on a team was to focus on those words, maybe even over your own racing

And how much concentration does it really require to comprehend, "He's coming on the inside", etc?

I could see it being particularly useful in the 3 moto format final moto.

Speculating here, but it might be because of GoPro's draw back in advertising dollars and sponsorship of the events.

What happened? I think GoPro is what happened. When GoPro took over the rights to MXGP and SX/MX the live cams stopped. I think GoPro never produced a camera that was good enough. IF you look at some of the GoPro live camera footage its actually the camera they used when we got the live footage. The screen (TV) showed the footage but had a GoPro logo on the screen even though it was shot with the previously used camera.
I may be wrong but i remember this thinking it was shit for the sport

That's exactly what I thought. Which is a damn shame, as it was really cool to see the first turn rampage live in first person pespective. You could step into rider's shoes a little more that way.
