I'm looking to get DC power out of a '14 YZ450 and need some help. I've looked for manuals and diagrams online to no avail.

I believe the ECU, and Fuel system run off DC so there should be a rectifier on board converting the AC supply from the coil/flywheel to a DC supply.

I need to know where I can tap into that DC supply as cleanly as possible, and what output it is (5v/12v)

Not sure if its an AC or DC system, but I would look for a connecter like the one below on your bike coming out of the regulator/(rectifier?) located behind the airbox/ under the tank. This is a lighting stator module for that bike. It looks like it taps right into the existing wiring:

Take a volt meter to the output of that regulator and you'll find out.

I've also read where people who have done this, have had to wire up a disconnect switch because the fuel pump takes every bit of energy it can get from the stator to run when starting it.

sorry for dragging up an old thread, but has there been any progress with the electrical system? i also have a '14 yz450f and im trying to wire a headlight to it but im not sure where i should wire it into and i worry about burning up a stator, any insight on that? also if you need it i can upload the wiring diagram from my manual

look in the manual for service coupler or something similar.....on the suzuki, you can hook up the electrics to an external battery to power them up when not running.

also, all the OEM style connectors try cycleterminal.com

This is a plug that is capped. It has a red 14v DC, a black negative, and green ground wire you can tap into. It's right above the left radiator.

There are several connectors you could splice into to get power. The Power Tuner connector is one, but you'd have to unplug your accessory to use the tuner. To me the easiest and most protected would be the capacitor connector under the seat. You can purchase plug ends online and make a Y harness. Another thing to consider is if your accessory has a potential high power draw you may be best to get as close to the regulator/rectifier and use a fuse. The closer you can get the less amount of wire would be exposed to high current. Just a thought. I personally haven't added anything to mine, but I have thought about adding lights or making it street legal and it seems pretty straight forward. I think if you remove some bodywork you should be able to figure out a good place to connect. I am pretty certain all red wires downstream of the regulator/rectifier are 12v+.

Y-harness to the capacitor under the seat works well. Wire in a fuse.
I have a 60W LED light with about 1 billion Lumen on a 250F and that is cutting it close. It's a flickering a bit at idle and it doesn't start cold (winter). But once hot there's no problem.

How did you get a reliable connection when you made the cap into a plug? Your picture inspired me to do the same for some cooling fans, but my connection seems to vibrate loose real quick when I get on the trail. What are the yellow things, are they waterproof, and what electrical terminations did you use?

So i want to wire in a light bar or two LED pods onto my 2014 yz450,

So can I really just use the tuner plug there's no issues with that at all? Could someone explain what would be bad if I did that ? Other than having to unplug to use the tuner


And will I need a shut off switch for the lights when I start it cold?

Shouldn’t be any issues, as the 14v coming from that plug powers the tuner, so you could power other things from it as well, if you have the correct plug.

Remember that it's not just voltage you need to worry about, but current as well. I'm betting the tuner power is very low current, so hooking it up to a high current application like lights or fans could cause some issues!

I tried the cap idea but also had it vibrate loose pretty quick. I ended up taking a lead off the DC wires after the converter and haven't had an issue since. I'm running two 12vdc 2 amp fans on a switch, and find that my 2013 is hard to start with the switch in the on position. I would use a switch if I were you.

I believe the stator puts out 140 watts, and my 2013 needs all of that to start. After it's running, it has about 60 - 70 watts to spare. These numbers aren't exact. I found hard numbers in a forum somewhere when I was originally researching my add-ons.

As I previously said. Make a Y-connector to fit the capacitor under the seat, and wire in a switch. I run 60W LED, so 4-5 Amps and need to switch it off to start.

Hey I read all of the posts and I feel like wiring to the condenser/capacitor is the best route. Would wiring to the capacitor work on any dirt bike? I have a 2008 Rmz 450 and trying to wire a 18w led bar. My capacitor has a black wire and a red wire. Can I just tap into the red wire on the capacitor and ground the light on the frame?
