I DDed a standard length van in it for 4 years, no wall and never had a problem with gas fumes. My now wife and I even drove it from NY to FL and camped in it many times. I even used it as a garage while I was at school, bike was in there for almost a solid year.

Nice set up!

Love it! I can't wait to go on the first camping trip on the van.

Well, I'm mindblown Thumpertalk still exists and why did you sell it? I don't think I will sell mine unless they offered 12k or some ridiculous offer

Looks great! My dad had a moto van all through the 70's and 80's. it was awesome! It was a 71' Econoline 200. He put plywood on the entire bed, carpeted the section from the side doors towards the front, permanently fixed in some tie down loops, put that old skool wood paneling on the sides and built some boxes over the wheel wells. He stored the jack and other things in there and it was another place to have a seat. He also installed a vent on the ceiling towards the rear that opened and closed. I am pretty sure it was for venting gas fumes when the bikes were in there.

I approve of the van life we had a lot of good times in that thing. And it IS amazing we are still alive. That thing had 2 lap belts, drum brakes, no a/c, and a very strong 302. I will try to find a picture. It was white with 3 tone metallic green stripes all the way around and a leather bra on the mini hood. Oh and it had a '71, 81', and 91' Hangtown stickers on it. Man I wish I still had that thing just for cool factor. Oh and TMI had my first coitus in that thing. Hahahahahah

Great story. I had to convince my girlfriend it was a good idea to get a van. She had in her mind that it was only for rapist or pedophiles.
After helping me build it and how comfortable we ride in the van she has fallen in love with it as well.

So the tragic ending to the van's life was this.

My dad traded it in for some SUV thing. He only got about $500 for it on trade in. I was like are you crazy? He did it anyway and I was pretty bummed. I had a friend who worked at a Pick N Pull in Rancho Cordova and he saw the van about a month later and said it was for sale down the street from him. It was being sold for about $1500. So I begged and scrounged and tried to get the money to go and buy it but could only get about half the money. Went in anyway and they said no.

So I sulked around for a few months and came home one night to my dad watching some news loop on tv and he said you have got to see this. The van was on tv!!!!!! A woman had bought it, drove it to New York, crashed through the UN gate and threatened to set herself on fire to protest the Gulf War. And we knew it was the van because of the green stripes, bra, and mag wheels. We were blown away and were kind of sad how the poor ol' van ended up.

Enjoy!!

Hah yeah TT is still there, somehow.

I bought my van for $1400 in 2010 - it was a 98 and spent all its life in NY with tons of salt. I had the alternator go on me in nowheresville MN one time and stranded me, that in conjunction with the fact that the body was rusting away, the gas tank straps were about to disintegrate from rust, and the entire brake system needed to be replaced it was time for it to go. I bought a new F150.

I've been thinking about wrapping it a flat color and putting rims on it, but no need to call that much attention to the van.
Just seen a good one at atlanta..

A couple little details we added to the van. We finally finished the futon build, carpeted and installed. All we are waiting for is the mattress foam to finish the front section.

I installed a diamond plate table to hold the tool box with a 90-degree lip and non-slip mat underneath to hold the whole box in place. The whole set up was tall enough that i was able to fit the propane bbq underneath.

A major priority.

Futon closed *still missing the foam, hasn't arrived yet*

lifted for storage underneath

Extended, the extension lays on the base of the seat when they are moved all the way forward.

The plywood is ging to be the base of the cushions. The one going on the extension is actually going to be the back cushion for the seat that will be hanging from the wall. The measures of the whole bed are 60L X 38W, it is a little wider than a twin bed. Thankfully I'm 5'9 and the width of the van is around 69 inches.

I think she approves!

Homemade mosquito net that attaches by magnets to the van body. This will be perfect for camping out in the wilderness and be able to leave the door open.
Yes I know it's Sunday and I should be riding but I currently have a torn acl so the van is a good priority.

I have screens that I cut that are a little larger than the drivers and paddenger doors windows that attach with magnets. roll the windows down and your golden and no need for your door to be open or for anyone to see straight in. Have a battery operated fan that I set on the dashboard as well if additional cooling is needed. Motovans are awesome!

Installed LED headlights. They are brighther than HID, less expensive and last longer. LED tag light and led light bulbs inside the van. I guess the van is literally lit

Any more thoughts on what you'll do in the back? I know you said you weren't keen on carpet but you don't think the carpet you've put in would withstand the dust/dirt?

I'm thinking of carpeting the walls and ceiling in the back of my van so interested in your thoughts.

I've been thinking of putting aluminum panels on the side were the windows are supposed to go following the contour of the body, raptor lining the floor and sides up to 1 foot of height from the floor up and then painting everything a light grey color including the roof. The carpet would look good for about 5 track days and then it's gonna be filled with dust and dirt and I hate cleaning the back. I'll gladly clean the front but not the storage area
My process is to finish the front, purchase and install a head unit speakers and back up camera, purchase a small portable AC for camping *I live in Florida and it's stupid hot all the time here* and then work on the back. Hopefully by the time I'm done my knee will be ready to go and start riding again.

Great use of space.
For the rear plywood, how about LineX type spray-on bedliner material?
Waterproof, durable, many colors available and you can touch it up if ever needed.

After knocking out the rust in the back of mine and coating with rust encapsulator, I finished the back end with a DIY bedliner. Just rolls on and super durable. Don't have to worry about fluid spills.

The only thing I intend to do a little different than OP's build is I'm planning on using the space under the bench in the front for a water tank.

Have you though about putting the water tank underneath the van on the side. Their is sufficient space to place at least. 10 gallon tank and it won't take any interior space.

Thought about that. Also thought of removing the spare tire for more room for a larger tank. I would like a larger capacity than 10 gallons. Can't put the tire on the rear because the van is wrapped for my business and I need the logo visible. Tricky part is I'll need to have a friend weld up a tank for me with baffles in it. We think we can get quite a bit of water in there and I don't want it sloshing around when half full. It's either that or I have to drain it before return trips, which seems wasteful.

So I tried installing a pneumatic spring to hold the lid and it was a complete fail. The pneumatic spring almost broke the lid so I installed this instead.

So today I finally finished the stupid front section. I bought a memory foam mattress, leather by the yard on eBay and 2 sets of plywood to finish the seats.

A few updates with the van.
First I put some wheels on this sucker. It really gives the Van a facelift.

2 weeks ago I was On my way back from the track and I decided with my girlfriend we were going to finish the back section.
Here is a few steps and the final result. I ended up using cedar tongue and grove wood, and doing a little storage bench to cover the wheel well.

I am still surprised it came out how it did. It’s a smells amazing and looks neat and organized. Btw the 630 is my number and my side where my bike goes and 911 is my girlfriends number.

I know this is an old thread but we just got our first moto van and I was looking for inspiration going forward... your set up is amazing! I had a question... do you think this would fit two bikes?
