Nice 1st post. That answers a lot. It looks like ROI on dirt bikes doesn't measure up and the "Corporate Halo" philosophy of having racing represent the company as a whole is not giving Suzuki a warm and fuzzy way of ignoring the financial drain of racing. I wonder if MotoGP makes the cut? We've seen this before, Kevin Schwantz and Kenny Roberts Jr. are taking their shirts off. Suzuki's Glory Day's in GP:

Wow. Kind of scary. Interesting to see how things develop, feels really sudden. I hope Everts is able to pull together enough funds to give Seewer and AJ rides for next year.

For some time, I have been more than concerned about the real possibility of MX/SX fading away.
"For some time, I have been more than concerned about the real possibility of MX/SX fading away"

How many guys line up every weekend for GNCC or in Europe Enduro for one single event 1500+ ?!
they all need bikes, parts, gear etc... The knobby family is bigger than MX & SX alone but,
they all like to watch MX & SX right?! same for the trial, supermoto, roadrace fans etc. motocross will never die. However, how to "persuade" street bike owners to buy a dirt bike, that's the question

If suzuki mxgp is closing. Is it possible for factory suzuki race bikes be under a different team(independent). Kind of what suzuki is doing it with JGR in the USA. Hate to see riders losing rides on both sides of the pond.

I predicted something pretty much like this more than 10 years ago. Mx is in big trouble. I am not happy I was right. It will not get better. Just take a look around at your local track or mainstream sportschannel. No grassroots and not mainstream, great job powers in charge

I think Seewer is in a big hole at the moment, ok he'll get paid out his contract by Suzuki but I fear he's unproven on the 450, so teams may be anxious about signing him. Now he's aged out of MX2, he can't get a ride in that class either.

Speedweek mentioned : Stefan Everts bemüht sich jetzt, Seewer und Jasikonis mit Suzuki-Maerial mit einem Privatteam in die MXGP-WM 2018 zu bringen.

So Everts is trying to run a private Suzuki team with Seewer and Jasikonis for next season

Costs have to cut in motox and fast or this sport is fading down. 4-strokes are not the answer.

If Alta moved their operation out of the peoples rep of california to a no corperate income tax state, not only would they make more$, their renting would probably drop 50k a month. Which should drop the price of their bikes a bit. Maybe at 13k they could sell twice as many bikes. KTM and others are close behind in the e bike releases.

Seewer , Lawerance and Jasikonis are to damn good to not have a ride imho. Someone / some team will pick them up. They would be crazy not too.

God damn this is a bummer!

I understand that. My point being, Suzuki has been making notable moves of retracting and adjusting markets for various reasons, all over the world, with various product lines. Suzuki's net profit shows that they have made smart moves to continue and/or increase a healthy bottom line. These moves include getting rid of areas they lose or break even in, and put more focus on where they do make money. That speaks volumes of what the economy looks like in the markets they are pulling out of, as they relate to MX.

Suzuki's action of retracting their race efforts speaks louder than words. Their efforts have reached a point of loss that they are no longer willing to accept. To that, people argued that Suzuki should bring back two strokes. I argued it is a huge money loss risk, Suzuki's action's of killing them and not resurrecting them thinks so too. Apparently, they think the same thing about the current products and market that they are pulling out of, let alone bring back part of an old one. Suzuki is good at making money and cutting the areas they dont make money.

It would be one thing if MX was unique in its decline, but its not. Motorsports, and sports in general (to some degree), are having issues. If it doesn't involve a cell phone, then its having problems. Sad to see.

On first look, is "JPY" by "revenue"-- Japanese Yen?

Too much money wasted on big name riders who wouldn't even race the main events or both motos here in the US. Hope they are able to make some changes to the 450 and turn it around. It is not looking to well for the motocross world lately.

I'm thinking there is more to this than money..Suzuki has been without a major sponsor since Rockstar went to Husky, and Everts hasnt managed to pull any decent dollar in to replace it.

Ben Townley was the biggest waste of money for Suzuki.

Good post. To keep getting that healthy bottom line they need to increase revenue or decrease costs. Suzuki seems to be pretty fluid in their business model and fairly successful (even though it means bad news for some of the motorsport series around the globe). It seems to me that they think going all-in with JGR in the US SX and MX series will accomplish their brand's goal of global awareness.

A question to the non-US members here, do you and your fellow moto friends watch US SX and MX as much as possible? If yes, then this may be a reason why Suzuki executives don't feel the need to double dip with a full race team in MXGP if they can get their brand in front of your eyes with only the JGR investment. Granted there will be some bad PR initially, but it may end up working out in their favor.

Lots of interesting stuff if you search for "motorcycle" in Suzuki's annual report: http://www.globalsuzuki.com/ir/library/annualreport/pdf/2017/2017all.pdf

The numbers in that chart posted above are yearly, not quarterly totals (it says 03 because their fiscal year ends in March). They are also in Japanese Yen.
One thing you will see in the report is that North American motorcycle sales are a tiny sliver, even less compared to motorcycle sales in Japan, Asia and Europe.

I can't believe so many of you are surprised. The REAL surprise is how long it took for these teams to start dropping out.

Do you guys even watch these races?
-Millions and millions spent for nonsense overseas races.
-No rider salaries
-Almost no motocross on tv due to the ridiculous cost of tv rights
-Virtually no high-dollar outside sponsors
-Almost no satellite teams (and the ones that do exist don't do the overseas races so they play no role in the actual championship)
-No privateers, and thus no incentive for dozens of them to try and go pro, removing the possibility of bringing in new people and new sponsors.
-Ridiculous cost of organzing a GP. The reason why we are seeing a retarded beach race at Assen instead of a real race at one of the many legendary tracks in The Netherlands.

Should I go on?

Please enlighten me exactly how a company like Suzuki could benefit from pumping millions into this circus with all of that nonsense going on?

Their motorcycle segment lost 900 million Yen in 2016, compared with loss of 10 billion yen -- or about $89 million US - in 2015.

Yeah because battery and software development is all the rage all over the country.... Plus, CA is very reactive to getting technology companies into their state. Who’s to say they aren’t helping Alta?

Don't blame Youthstream for everything, blame KTM Laughing Wink it's just competition on track and on the sales floor
9/22/2017 3:36pm
Teams need to scale down on there pit presence for starters. Palm trees and fancy fans don't win races. Tyre warmers and suspension warmers need to be banned. I love works bikes but maybe more restrictions need to be placed to bring costs down.
The OEMS need to get together and talk about what they need even if it means doing there own series and pissing off youthstream. F1 have had the OEM's threaten to boycott Bernies circus and do there own series for years and look what they get something in there favour every year.
These riders ride so much I'd love to know what the budget is for practicing alone.

I was watching the "coverage" and wondering about that myself. It looked alot like a Daytona type set-up. I assumed it was a spread of the dreaded Daytona-is-the-center-of-the-Universe disease.
