It depends on where break is and how it's positioned. My kid had his most recent in sling as doc said X wasn't needed. Evidently coming more common not to go to the X brace every time like they used to.............

I think everyone who rides a lot has a funky looking neckline and droopy shoulder or two.

If it's comfortable it's in place, if it's burning it's being pulled apart. That's a good indicator of how it's healing and if you should use the sling. I mainly am using the sling at times to remind me to not do this or that.

The advantage is one less surgery. If you get it plated it will heal faster and thats all. It is a matter of opinion. Some doctors will tell you that you should have the plate and screws removed inorder for the bone to be as strong as before the break. Again a matter of opinion.

Broke mine into 5 pieces. Had it plated. No regrets on the plate. My shoulder seems to ache when the weather turns cold but all good other than that. As far as mountain biking the week after.... not the case with me. It sucked for 3 weeks

I'm 2-1/2 weeks out of surgery. 1st collarbone - at 40.
I think we should talk about the most important step...
What's everyone doing for rehab?

I have most of my range of motion back from just crawling my fingers up the wall then holding the stretch.
How about getting strength back? Any suggestions?

Yes yes, probably the most common mx injury. Just like most of you all are saying, most of the time surgery isn't necessary unless you want to get back at it quickly. I broke my left one for the third time this weekend and will have it replated. The last time I had it replated, I only missed 4 sx races in 2013.

Broke my left, clean snap. No surgery and functionally everything is fine but my left shoulder is a tad shorter than my right now.

I broke mine in a couple places when I was a teenager and again in my 40s. Takes a lot longer to heal when older! Broke on Labor Day, was considered fully healed in January. Probably should have had a rod installed on that one. It took a year, or more, for me to feel comfortable sleeping on that side.

I have broken my right one twice, first time was a large separation that they used a pin rather then a plate. Removed the pin after 10 weeks, kept me off the bike for 3-4 months, but it healed perfectly. The second time they just let it heal on its own and now I have a major bump next to my throat. Surgery wasn't beneficial on this one due to how it broke and where it broke at.
The second time I had asked the doctor if they could do surgery again just to get rid of the pain as it lingered on and was swollen for about 4 weeks. That was in April and I was back on the bike first weekend of June. Still hurts every now and again depending how I sleep.

I broke my right clavicle one year ago. My break looked similar to yours. My surgeon said surgery was not necessary, wear a sling if so desired for comfort. The sling cause pain, so I just held the arm where I thought it should be. Slept flat on my back for a couple months. It healed a touch short, but no problems that I can tell.

All good info, went with not getting surgery, 3 weeks in and almost have 90% mobility back. Going back in a few weeks hopefully i get the ok to start pushing it and rehabbing.
