Basically the stock clutch pack has 8 plates (I believe) and the torq drive is a normal clutch (Not and AUTO like the Exp line) The clutch design and clutch pack make for a more aggressive engagement, feels more like a hit on/off switch to engage the power vs a slide on power compared to stock. Also, the clutch pack count makes for a slightly lighter pull on the actual lever itself which has helped slightly with arm pump. Hope this helps!
Many thanks for your review.

Question for all you 17 owners. Have you found that they stall extremely easy. I rode my buddies this past weekend and with the clutch adjusted out fully at the perch it would still stall with the clutch pulled in. Is that normal for these or was it just his?

Have you tried speeding up the idle 1/8 turn at a time? sometimes this helps

It wasn't my bike and I only rode it for about 20 minutes so I didn't really want to mess with it. That would be something to try though.

Yeah, I stalled mine like crazy day 1. It seems to be better now (7 hours on bike), but I suck at riding the thing, so that's what I assumed my problem was. Also got the Tokyo Mods remap, so maybe that helped too.

Slight up in idle speed, and remap helps the roughness down low in revs

Not at all. I was just thinking about this very subject after motoing this past weekend, and that this bike doesn't stall.

Idle set at 2100, and had a remap.

What do you mean clutch adjusted right out ? Freeplay you mean.
I have had no problems at all I'm at 24 hrs all I've done is set sag at 105 I had setup out of balance early and struggled With front end grip but it was at 110 at 105 it was much better. I'm about to buy a yoshi but apart from removing the side airbox covers and removing the backfire screen , I run a twinair fire retardant one . The bikes great , no complaints. I have just had a mod done to push rod and fitted Hinson fibres and springs the clutch has a much nicer bite and feel now.

I am always stalling mine at the worst time during a race Sad
But I'm pretty sure it's just me being lazy on the clutch. Love the bike otherwise, and just have to get the electric start installed.

How do you like the FMF I'm debating between that and the yoshi but always been a big FMF fan.

Love it.. never ran the yoshi.. seeing some cracked one's lately.. glad I got the fmf.. sweet ass pipes. Quality is top notch. Feels like the transition from bottom to mid is smoother.. I didn't remap my ecu.. but probably will in the future.

No problem buddy. Bike is bitching! Glad I'm apart of the build! From the FMF to the X-Trig Clamps, it's amazing lol.

Hi Guys,

I've got a bit of a dilemma deciding between the '17 and '18 .

The '17 is now available in South Africa but the '18 will only be available for us in October. I know there was some improvements made on the '18 and of course the electric start that is now standard.

But , being a guy on the light side (65kg) I think it'll be maybe better to get the 17 as it has lighter fork springs in ?

Not really looking forward to spend a few $ to just install the electric start though, so thats why I'm asking you guys.

What would you do in my position ?

I have been out of action for almost a month now because of the dreaded Yamaha-crack-on-the-frame-weld problem and after arguing with them for a long time , I decided to just get a new bike.

Some advice would be appreciated Smile

Just wait...

The e start is awesome and would cost an arm and a leg outside of it coming on the bike stock.

The fork springs are light on the 17 (I weigh about 150lbs) and still bottom on them regularly.

The mapping is better too on the 18 (from what I've heard, smoother and less jumpy)

Lastly that motor mount will make a substantial difference I would suspect, further smoothing out any harshness felt through the chassis

I weigh 205 and had my bike revaled and they kept stock fork springs in it. But the rear went stiffer, stock valving front fork where horribly soft coming into corners it would just dive down. What ever they did to the valving and shims with stock fork springs is night and day difference.

Thanks for the advice so far. It's going to be hard to wait an extra 3 months for the 18'.

I will be able to get the e-start kit for the '17 , I saved up some money to rebuild my YZ250f's engine, but thats not an option now so... Laughing

Might get my wheels anodized at a later time then, as for the engine mounts, I heard the RX's models' is basically the same as the 18's engine mounts , is that correct ? If so , I'l just buy them from my dealer , shouldn't be too expensive ?

The 17 RX mounts and the 18 R mounts are different from what I hear. ML512, I believe said they were different. I would wait and get the 18 mounts personally. I priced out the 17 RX mounts and it was about $100 or so. Wouldn't think the 18 R mounts could be much more if they are.

Make sure your taking your free play out of it some when bikes hot or you will be pulling lever in halfway before it's even disengaging making stalling an issure.
You MUST make sure you add free play back in when bikes cold thou again or you will fry it prematurely.

I'd get the 18 it's been refined in the right places. I'm 70kg ,vet expert 45 years I'm fine with the stock 17 springs but your still better off with 18s as you will be riding higher in the stroke and gives you more comp leway.
Even at 70 kg it's riding low in the stroke.
E/s would be nice I'm a vet lol but this bike starts easy. I'm definitely curious on these engine mounts and tank mounts everyone is discussing. I have not ridden bike yet on true hard pack , mainly sand and we are in winter . I havint found the bike harsh but the mounts will add some comfort with more flex. For the engine mapping I find my bike runs great , I'm suprised how many times I have raced it on the mellow map with consistent starts and feeling less tiring . I have only done moto so far ,not one trail ride and the jerkyness is only noticeable running around slowely in the pits. Cross country guys are using the throttle cams and they eliminate it. I've added Hinson fibres and springs only also had a mod done to the push rod and use a pro taper perch and it's great , light pull with more bite . I have just put on a full yoshi system .yet to ride with that .im at 24 hrs its a Great bike and I'm feeling pretty soughted with it now.

What does your dealership cost to have electric start installed and for the kit? Thinking about doing but I'm way to worried do myself I would just second guess myself putting it back together

Just installed my e-start yesterday afternoon, took roughly 6 hours but almost 3 of that was messing with the wiring harness and trying to get it perfect. If you have a general knowledge of motors and the right tools it's really not too hard of a job. I got all the parts, including a featherweight lithium ion battery for under $550 shipped if you shop around a little bit. The only thing I paid retail for was the wiring harness, they were hard to find and the part# doesn't come up in any OEM parts supplier websites that I searched and also couldn't find it on the fiche. Nice little project to do while my busted ankle heals.

The 2018 engine hangers finally came off back order. I slapped em on my 17' this evening and hopefully will get to test them out this weekend. Not a huge differences between the two year models. 18' hangers seem to be trimmed down a few mm on each side.

Yeah. Not much of a difference. Interested in hearing a ride report if your able post some feedback. Do the 18 hangers have more of a bend (angle) to them ? Hard to tell from the pics.. Maybe their made out of a different substrate to allow them to flex more.

The bends seem exactly the same. As well as the weight in hand. I laid the hangers on top of each other an lined up he holes to show the thinning of the 18' to 17'. Looks 3-4 mm of difference per side to the naked eye. I'll try to give a update next week if I get to ride. weather looks like it might let loose here in TX.

Are you a national level rider or as good as Chad reed thinks he is at testing ?
Your not going to notice , and if you do chances are it's in your imagination.
@ the ripe age of 45 I've come to the realisation that I spent to much money and time playing
And messing with my bikes. My 17 has a yoshi a seat cover , a steering dampner from a new 16
Stock gearing after trying a 50 , decal kit ,radiator braces , a fat bar and hand guards . And a remap
For map 3 . Where does it end? Engine hanger change and all this is not going to make us faster
Spend your time and money riding and training right at your skills etc not just banging
Out moto after moto . Susspension is where I would get the comfort your chasing. The bike
Is sweet , just ride it unless your young enough to go pro.
