I'm so sketched-out on road biking right now. We've had several (relatively) local riders killed in the past year, and one of my club buddies hit a dog a couple of weeks ago and is still in the bed recuperating. Yesterday evening I was warming up for our weekly group ride when my front tube basically exploded, ripping my tire off of the rim. The dislodged tire got wedged between the rim and the brake pad. Thank God I was just cruising uphill when it let go. If I'd have been running 20+ it would have been ugly.

Back into the woods for me for a while.

UPDATE – 11:29 AM: Hayden is out of surgery, and has been put into a medically induced coma. He is expected to stay in the coma for the next 24 hours in order to faciliate healing.
UPDATE – 8:51 AM: Hayden has been transferred to Bufalini Hospital in Cesena near Forli, in order to see head and trauma specialists at that hospital. His condition is said to be very serious, but stable.

Last summer I was on the road bike and did a short ten mile ride around the neighborhood.
A few friends passed me on the way home so I turned around and caught up to them.
We rode a mile or two and I don't remember much after that.
A dog or something furry ran in the road and I hit it.
Or so I'm told. Smashed my face on the asphalt and messed my lips and shoulder up pretty bad too.
Took three days before I could walk without getting dizzy.
A year later and I still have weird little things happen to my memory and balance. Head injuries are no laughing matter.

THE DOCTOR'S BULLETIN -
"Nicky Hayden is hospitalized in the resuscitation department, under very bad conditions. Due to the wounds reported, it was not possible to intervene surgically. The prognosis is very serious. " It is the medical newsletter spread out in the evening by the Hospital Bufalini of Cesena, where the 2006 MotoGP World Champion is hospitalized this afternoon. The 35-year-old US was driven by a car while riding a racing bike around 14, on the provincial road Riccione-Tavoleto, not far from Misano Adriatico
At 21.30, the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena released a first update on its condition, which did not improve when the pilot came to the hospital from the Infirmary in Rimini where he arrived with a code of maximum Gravity immediately after the accident. Hayden, according to the information, is too weak to be operated and is currently in the resuscitation department, with a hematoma in the skull that is the main problem. But it also has fractures to the femur and the pelvis. update for Thursday 8am.

Well looks like I might be selling my road bicycle, I have only had a close encounter once but this shit is scaring me to death, I know a few people personally that have been hit by cars and got mildly messed up, and a few that had pretty bad crashes and had road rash from hell.

Get a mountain bike than at least like moto its up to me to crash lol plus dirt is better then pavement ( plus about 8 miles from my work we have a sick Mountain bike trail area ).

I can't speak for certain on the extent of his injuries but a friend of mine close to the situation says that it's possible he won't make it, wish him and his family the best of luck. Sad deal in general, I hope he pulls through. Really makes you think about road biking but I guess you can't live in a bubble.

Lord I hope you are not correct. Nicky is such a humble down to earth guy. Some guys I'm jealous of their success because I don't think they deserve it. Others make me feel happy they have it with zero jealousy from me. Nicky is one the guys I am always happy for.

People in Italy drive CRAZY!
5/17/2017 2:44pm
Love my road bike. My favorite rides are during the week early in the morning out in the country. Seems to be less traffic then. I have 1 more year on it, 1 more Ironman triathlon, then I'm heading to the woods for more "fun" riding and less training rides. No close calls on the bike, but I hear stories all the time.

On the counter, I hear of way more dirt bike crashes with worse injuries then I do road bikes.

ahah you're ridiculous. search on youtube videos about russia china and india. in those countries people drive crazy and die every day.
in northern italy people drive normally, there are a lot of police and speed controls. south italy is a bit worse but acceptable for people security.
Incidents can happen everywhere. USA too.

You should read more news, just in the last 2 weeks we've had 3 or 4 car vs. road bike collisions that have resulted in significant injuries and this is a town of only 350k. Way more people get significantly injured on road bikes than motocross bikes.

Sorry to hear this...hope he recovers completely. I lost a friend this year the same way, and the MX world lost Gassin' Gaylon Mosier in a road bike accident many years ago. Stay safe out there, guys!
