Interesting on filtered glasses, if you are Tomac fan you "saw" dirty team tactics in NJ. If you are a Dungey fan you "saw" Tomac playing dirty trying to take out Dungey. Osborne fans say "part of winning a championship". Get on your keyboards and have fun. The best part is in the free world you can "see" what you want to see and it is great. Have a discussion in North Korea or the old communist blocks...
Sort of frightening in the big picture.
What happened last week and this week was complete and utter BS for a fan of actual racing. But the majority of people simply like to be entertained under the guise of racing. WWE is perfect analogy.
When professional racers start racing backwards for championships, there is obviously something wrong.
I for one am a little shocked out how few people question the legitimacy of Osborne's takeout. I always thought a 'blockpass' was legit and a 'take out' wasn't, but apparantly when it's 'for a championship' you can clean a guy's clock without repercussions. Not only is this sport filled with undereducated people, it is filled with dangerous, undereducated people.

Certainly a different type of race, good to watch, but year would suck to see that type of race week in week out.
Now that 250 race was epic, every rider trying their hardest to race forward and Osbornes attack to win the title.
Fearo, I didn't really see anything wrong with that move, I certainly think it took Savatgy by surprise, I doubt he knew Osborne was that close, if he did more than likely he is prepared for that type of move and is able to either block the inside or at least turn out of the contact.
It was a hard pass for a rider moving forward, it was not like Osborne was falling through the filed and trying to hold on to one spot at a time with take out moves. There was an opening, he went for it with 100% commitment and made it work.
Marvin in NJ? Not the first time it's happened, and who cares? Maybe make it look a bit better next time? I mean, at least don't pass the guy and sprint away proving a point and making people madder in the process!
Eli in Vegas? See the first point. If anything, be mad that he did a piss-poor job of it after witnessing exactly how TO do it!
With the situation between Tomac and Dungey, the points spread was significantly more, and the questionable riding tactics weren't something that only took place with a couple of corners to go - it was multiple instances of purposely slowing down to try and mess with another rider. In other words it came across as cynical and calculating rather than desperate. Not saying you're wrong but I think it's easier for people (who aren't overtly bias) to sympathise with one scenario over the other.
You're literally saying every block pass with contact needs a penalty, deliberate or not...
That's never been what MX was about and there would be no way to do it. Fuck me, they can't even police something as black and white as a "100% retaliate and you're out rule!"
It wasn't even a hard hit, it was perfect, he literally took his wheel. No t-bone. Nada. And if Savatgy got injured, then shit happens. Osborne lost his shot at a title when Bowers broke his finger... it happens. How the fuck could the janky AMA/FIM clown-show officiate such a stance?
Do you seriously want to encourage even less passing "just in case?"
It reminds me more of watching grand national dirt track motorcycles and the strategy of not wanting to lead going into the last corner because somebody is Damn sure going to draft and blow by right before the flag.
I don't see anything wrong with what tomac did. He could have done what Osborne did to savatgy several times but didnt. Dungy, being dungy, rode smart, never folded, and did the only thing he could have done. Both men raced admirably.
Some of you guys want to talk old school this, and old school that.
This was kindergarten stuff compared to what matesivich, bradshaw, Larry ward and others used to do to each other, and is absolutely nothing like what the Russians did in the gps.
And if you guys thing Savatgy wouldn't have done the same thing given the opportunity, you're wrong AF.
I was triggered when I saw the post-race press conference and someone asked Osborne if he ever considered the idea that he could've been penalised and he with this really dumbfounded look he replied 'It was for a championship, what are you gonna do?'. I absolutely can not disagree more with the idea that if it's "for a championship" you can just clean a guy out. There is no special rulebook that comes into play on the last lap of a championship race. A takeout should be dealt with the exact same way if it were for a championship or for 15th place in an LCQ. This sport needs more uniformity in its ruling, not more 'ifs' and 'buts'.
And of course I don't think Osborne should have handed it over, he had every right to try to make a move, and like everyone said, every other rider would have done the same thing. BUT, and here's the kicker, it's not because you try to make a risky pass (for a championship or not) that it can't be considered an overly aggressive move by the people who actually monitor and judge the race, in this case the AMA/FIM. I'm all for making your own calls during a race, but riders are not gods and should be held accountable for their actions on the racetracks at all times.
As for the question if the AMA/FIM could enforce better rules around blockpassing and takeouts, well that's a whole other story. I'm pretty sure most people would like there to be some brighter people calling the shots, but it is what is is, and it's what we have to live with for now.
Like I said, I'm on the fence about the whole thing, I just find it really strange that so many are on one side of that fence, and so few are on the other side.
You have people saying its wrong for tomac to block dungey, yet its okay for osborne to totally smash savatgy.
Osbourne rode his ass off with a ton of heart, came through the pack and raced for a title, great ride.
Tomac was brilliant in what he did too. He slowed enough to Bunch up the pack in hopes of causing Carnage behind him. He held the paid out there for Tomac to pass told Matt took it a couple times and got knocked around, Dungey on the other hand you didn't fall for it and never really let himself get hit too hard. I don't think he'll I was on a mission to actually knock Dungy down, but he was definitely on a mission to not done to get off the track and get people to pass him.
I have a friend who saw things differently than me, he thinks Osborne came through the pack made a lot of aggressive moves in the past he made on Savatgy was part of him racing forward. He said Eli on the other hand waited around and took sheet shots hoping to disrupt Dungeys race.
I thought both guys did what they had to do, it just didn't work out for one of them.
If Osbourne would have center punched him, I'll be the first one to say it was cheap.
Zach Osbourne has worked his entire life to become a champion. Think about how many hours he has spent preparing for that moment. You honestly think after the ride he put on to get back to Joey that he was just going to lay back and let it go? The riders do not get fucking participation trophies, they are paid to win....and that is what he did. He took the sole opportunity he had, no one got hurt, no one protested, and it made for one of the best sx finishes of all time.
I just do not how someone who loves the sport of MX can have issues with a solid block pass for the title with two turns to go.
It wasn't a t-bone. It wasn't dirty. Contact sure, but for a title and at the end of the day just a block pass... something that is at the very core of the sport and particularly Supercross!!!
Pit Row
It's for a title. It's all on the table barring straight t-bones and even then, you'd probably try it and see if you get away with it.
We've sooooooo very rarely seen any contact that is completely out of line. The rest of the time, whether you like it or not, it's probably been ok. And if you don't, you've either got an axe to grind or don't get what SX really has always been about.
From a technical standpoint though (and if things were judged purely by a cold, unbiased, super computer AI) you're totally correct. One blatant takeout shouldn't be judged any differently from another due to the outside influences. But again, due to the human equation... I'm not sure there's completely any way round that.
Did you even read my entire post? I try really hard not to get involved in pissing matches online, but you wrote basically an entire paragraph with sentences like You honestly think after the ride he put on to get back to Joey that he was just going to lay back and let it go? after I wrote And of course I don't think Osborne should have handed it over, he had every right to try to make a move . If you really read my post and thatt's your reply then damn...Don't really know what to say to that.
Despite my best attempts, pretty much everyone except Motocross83 (thank you) completely missed the point I'm trying to make. And like you wrote in your last post Motocross83, of course the officials are human, but really that shouldn't matter. Like I said, there is no special rulebook for the last lap in a championship race. And I'm not even saying a bad judgement call was made, I just think it's strange that a guy goes flying off the bike after an aggressive pass and everyone is like "yep, that's racing".
Anyone who has ever raced knows why Osbourne came in hard. Savatgy should have seen it coming. He looked like he was day dreaming about his victory as he trail rode into that corner. Next time he might not be caught so off gaurd two turns from the finish when a championship is on the line!
Ride of a Life time for Zach-O... Savatgy left a 1 ft hole, Zach took it and made it a 3 ft one..
