For those of you that can actually throw a whip...

What was it like the first time you actually threw a good one? I don't ride anymore and when I did I wasn't very fast. It was always something I wanted to learn though. I remember one time I hit a medium sized jump that was right out of a corner and at a slight angle so it kind of threw you a little sideways. It was the coolest feeling. Wondering if there are any good stories out there from your first whip.

Don't remember when it happened. I just started throwing them one day. Really had no idea I was even getting flat. It just kinda came with scrubbing jumps and stuff back in the early 2000's when I got to A/B class. But I used to watch Charlie bogard throwing big whips over the big floater step up after the start sweeper at lake Whitney, and at the big table tops at mosier. I'd just study him every lap. Coolest and best memories of my mx life watching that magic. These days the whips guys throw are just mind blowing. Upside down and backward. Sick.

I'll never forget one night at crosscreekmx park in Tx. Some guy who was clearly a beginner level rider. Had an old cr250 with all black plastics. Lol came up to me and asked how do I whip the bike? I was like well honestly it came with years of riding and a lot of it came with speed naturally. I just told
him to kinda lean off the face and use the bars to help whip the bike around. He was like I'm gonna do it, I don't even care if I bring it back. So I was like alright man whatever. Dude comes over the finish line table top and just lays it over flat! I was like holy crap at first! But he never brought it back and just lands sideways and leaned over. Tore himself up and the bike was a mess. But he hopped up limping and shit yelling all excited. Dude was stoked! Laughing Laughing

I recall the first time over the 200 foot ridge to ridge jump at a track I built up in a hollow.

The 30 or 40 members of then motodrive that came out that epic Saturday I'm sure have it burnt into the moto hard drive of the br ain.

Your first whip was over a 200 foot mountain jump? While we at it, mine was over the grand canon, so pitted.

You see that mountain over there? I bet I can throw a football over that mountain. And your grandma broke her coccyx.

Ha wow. Guy has guts. I've "tried" to do whips many times. Never had the guts to actually try to lean off the lip. I could always do a mean butt whip however.

For the longest time I thought my whips were nice and big, and then I'd see a picture/video and be embarrassed at how little they were.

Then there was this one time at a friends private track who had this nice ~70 ft. table with generous lip and landing. I was getting comfortable sitting down and throwing some but nothing big. I had my brother follow me to see how I was doing and I put a bit more effort into the motion and I remember really leaning and sliding up the lip with the front tire and I thought for sure I was going to crash while midair. Somehow I landed it perfectly, and after my brother's eyes were wide open as he came up to me and he said it was easily the biggest whip he'd ever seen me throw.

The only time I did anything resembling a whip was about 15 years ago on my 2001 RM125. I never felt more comfortable on a bike in my life. I was racing quite a bit back then... I was also young and in shape (17 years old).

It was at "Hungry Valley MX" (before it was I-5, then Gorman or whatever they are calling it now). There was a sort of kicker/table/ski jump type deal out of the back section... I just started leaning it over off of the lip and let things happen. It was one day, did it several times and never really did it again. Rode a lot less after that and never felt right on my RM250 or RM-Z450... I really just let my skill and fitness go.

Mine was on my 1st ride day after ever having my suspension revalved. As I was heading up this jump face to a decent sized--about 70-80 foot table--I just sporadically leaned over on the side of my bike right before the face, and threw a pretty tiny whip. What amazes me most is that I was never intentionally thinking "I'm gonna whip this jump." It just sort of happened because I felt so comfortable on the bike with my new suspension. It was the most pumped I've ever felt on my dirt bike, ever, even though it was such a tiny whip! It was some sort of last second decision that somehow felt so natural. I couldn't stop telling my dad about my first whip that day that he didn't get to see. To this day, there is a certain track I go to just because it has ONE good whip jump. Whips are easily the most fun/enjoyable sensation I find out of riding a dirt scooter.

Mind you, this is after about 3-4 years of riding as a C rider. It was jump #8 at Cycle Ranch in Floresville, TX. I mention this because I have a feeling ya boi at Cross Creek knows exactly what jump I'm talking about. I think it was universally known as the perfect whip jump in Texas! If you're dying to learn how to whip, remember, it has to be just the right face to whip on. There are multiple tracks I ride at with zero good 'whip jumps'.

My first one that I thought was decent was horrible lol I remember feeling so cool and watching it on video like wtf was that. I eventually got pretty decent at them. Nowadays when I'm feeling really comfy Ill still try to just get her flat. For me its more about trying to be smooth and throwing whips makes you feel smoother sometimes. until you don't bring it back then there's nothing smooth about that.

I grew up riding bmx and watching MC ride supercross. I really just wanted to ride like MC.! I started doing baby whips at the sand dunes and on tables. Gradually got to the point where I could get upside down. Just takes lots of practice. I don't remember the first big whip but I do remember my first real big air! It was like that top of the roller coaster feel. Oh shit I'm going to die! And then I didn't and just wanted to do it again. Lol

I almost broke my back and had a nasty concussion back at a Ponca qualifier back in 04 there. Got sideways off that old double they used to have after the catchers mit turn. It was muddy as shit in practice that morning. The double was blind and I collected about 10 other bikes in that nasty crash until someone got over there to flag people. They life flighted my ass out of there on a backboard and I never went back lol so can't recall which jump was jump 8. Plus they changed that track so much.

I remember, unintentional as hell. Hit something on the upramp and it kicked the back end out? It wasn't really a whip, I guess. I didnt really pull it back, hit the old panic button (throttle at the stopper) and hoped for the best, I got out of it okay. But I eventually did it for real at this track in the middle of nowhere that a few people knew of. Had this 65 footer that was basically right out of the berm at the bottom of a big downhill. I honestly not know how anyone could hit this without getting sideways over it, so fun and so easy! You find those perfect lips just for it!

This is my first real attempt at learning. I spent about 12 years riding and not having any ability to whip whatsoever. It was a bit of a hipped table which made it more acceptable to my brain to lean off the face. I didn't really know what I was doing since whip technique is really hard to explain. This jump allowed me to start getting the feeling down and it kind of progressed from there. It's really just a feeling that starts to develop. Don't be afraid to throw your butt in there Laughing I think butt whips are just the naturally progression. You gotta get used to hanging off the bike! I still struggle throwing them the other direction. Might need to go find a hip jump the other way to spend the day working on getting my butt out there!

Lol. Did you just play it off real cool like you had it under control the whole time?

Only whip I've thrown has been on accident. There is a little hip jump at Oak Hill that is on a soft turn that makes you feel like you're whipping it. But they're probably like the whips mentioned in your first paragraph?

I remember I was at Elsinore main track and was hitting the dragons back on the back side and kept thinking to myself how cool I probably looked with what I thought was a whip, after pictures and videos surfaced of me actually doing turn downs...damn!

I mean i can get the bike sideways but can't get the bike flat...
