125/250f regional Supercross titles/wins are not counted in official totals. National championships are 125/250f Motocross, 250/450f Motocross, 500 motocross, and 250/450f Supercross.

If we added the regional titles and races: RC's (1 125sx east title/12 wins), MC's (2 125 SX west titles/13 wins, Stews (2 125SX titles/18 wins), Rv's (1 250f SX title/11 wins) and Dungey's (1 250f SX title/12 wins). With their 125/250 Supercross wins/titles they would be further ahead. Reed (1 125 East SX title/6wins).

RC raced 2.5 years of 125s (2 SX/3MX)
Stewart raced 3 years of 125s.
Reed raced 1 year of 125s/250f and 1 year 250 MXGPs before moving to 250 SX.
RV and Dungey both raced 3 seasons of 250f.

All of these guys are badass and in elite territory. It's all just bench racing.

But to answer the original question Dungey is firmly in the top 10 greatest AMA Racers and should be in the top 5 when he's done. If he stays there that will be up to the future generation of racers to knock them off the top of the record books.

Ok cool wasn't sure if they were counted within the records or if you had counted them also either way they all deserve to be in the elite group I was just surprised at how long some of them stayed litres class till they moved up, i know in Australia most guys that were good enough back in reeds time used to to go straight to the then 250 class when they turned pro, I don't think Reed even raced 125/lites class as a pro at 16 here in Aus I'm sure he went straight to jay foremans factory suzuki team on the 250.

How do you think some of them like Rv and dungey or even Stewart would have gone had they had the chance to step straight up to the 450 class after 1 year would they have been more or less successful?
Reed might have only raced 1 125 SX season here in 02 but he was already a professional rider for 3 or 4 years before that. Stewart,Villopoto,,Dungey etc. turn pro and start in 125/lites class like most do and did 3 years in the class then moved up. Not sure how stewart or villopoto would have done in premier SX class after only 1 year in lites but in 08 Dungey in only his 2nd lites season raced 3 450 SX races and went 10th,4th and 2nd place almost winning minneapolis and this only 20 months after being an amateur B rider

Jeff Stanton is the perfect comparison to Dungey. Very consistent and not always the fastest rider in the series but never made big mistakes or rode over his head. Stanton certainly benefited when RJ got hurt in 89' as did Dungey when RV crashed out in 2010. If Dunge wins the SX title this year, it will be awfully similar to Stanton in 1992 when he won only 3 races to Bradshaw's 9.

Dude if you're gonna talk about misfortune, Reed was killing them both outdoors and was just as unlucky inside.

Ifs and buts and candies and nuts tho.

Reed was leading because the original misfortune to RD in moto 2 at Freestone.... RD should have started that season with 3 moto wins in the first 4 races.

If Dungey wins SX and MX this season I don't see how you could say RV is above him on the list. Sure RV beat him for multiple years, but is there nothing to be said for having Aldon Baker and a bike that was much superior to the KTM up through the end of RVs AMA career?

If Tomac beats him for both titles this season then it remains a tough debate...

Dungey is the Fantastic Four of MX.

They're superheros and kick some ass, but meh. They're boring as shit!

The people want Wolverine and Deadpool.

I never saw the news about Dungey being forced to sign a contract for an inferior manufacturer.

Bradshaw won...every fan knew this...years later we find out he intentionally threw the race because of contract disagreement..

I like the Stanton comparison.

And I'd easily put Dungey in my top 10 greatest, but my top 10 would factor in more than just number of wins.

Dungey and his team have developed an approach to training and racing that keeps him up front and also relatively free (not immune) from injury. His weakness is being vulnerable to guys who'll push closer to the limits of the equipment (RV, ET, JS, KR).

Guys who ride a bit closer to the edge occasionally crash catastrophically and lose a season. Reed, Tomac, and Rokzen have all gotten seriously injured in the past few seasons.

With the equipment and tracks as extreme as they are, I think the Dungey approach will be examined and discussed for a long time to come. He will definitely not be forgotten. I think his stature will only grow.

He wasn't forced to do anything, but money talks. KTM didn't have a single premier class SX win before him if I remember correctly... And if the 2015.5 bike was the improvement that everyone says it was, but is still now on a level field with the other 450s... Kind of proves the point.

You guys always rank the guys who are recent so highly. A prime RJ and Hannah dominated the sport like few others have, they were machines indoors and OUT! They might have had three titles to win but most did not care about 500s for a good deal a time and one mechinacl would derail a season unlike now. Also in Bob Hannah's champinship run he won 18 races but there was only 33 in total from 77-79. You plug his winning percentage in today's amount of races and he has 27 from those 3 years alone. All guys basically from 1990 on have benefited from nice long SX seasons to boost the win totals. MC is hard to rank because he is so SX heavy, every guy on this list is a better MX rider and most were another level outdoors vs MC. Also I get it's your opinion, just good ole bench racing. BTW I'm young not and old guy trying to re live the glory years but when you study the sport there is no damn way RJ and Hannah are 6 and 7.
For sure the Hannah/Johnson/Ward ranking is hard to place amongst the current stats for wins. I think the amount of years in title contention/winning championships has to play a factor to. MC had 8 years of titles (93-2000) RC had 10 years (97-07) Dungey has 8 years so far (09-16).

Hannah's titles came between 76-79. 4 years derailed by the water skiing accident. He kept wining races after and if not for injuries would have been a champ again in 83.

Johnson's titles came between 84-88. 5 years. He won some races after, but his wrist screwed him from being way further up the list.

Ward's titles came between 84-90. 7 years. He outlasted Johnson and out matched Stanton for those last 2 500cc national titles.

Stanton's titles came between 89-92. 4 years. 2 of his titles (89 SX,92 SX) while won fair and square were gift wrapped to him after Johnson broke his wrist and Bradshaw threw away a massive points lead.

#1 and #2 are firmly entrenched as RC and MC. MCs 95 and 96 motocross seasons proved he was the man outdoors during the mid 90s, plus he was leading the points in 98 when he pulled out with a broken wrist he suffered in SX. He got cocky and lost the 96 title by a couple of points after dominating the beginning of the season. All he had to do was roll around at Washougal or not try an impossible jump at Millville.

He won 4 of the first 6 races that year, including catching and passing them both at the opener at Hangtown and leading them with them right on his back at Budds, and the most Motos up until that crash.

Take out Millville he wins that title. Stamp it.

Top 10 AMA Motocross/Supercross Combined in my opinion: Titles/Wins
1. RC 15 Titles 150 Wins
2. MC 8 Titles 89 Wins
3. Villopotto 9 Titles 72 Wins
4. Dungey 7 Titles 79 Wins
5. Stewart 5 Titles 98 Wins

7. Hannah 6 Titles 64 Wins
8. Ward 7 Titles 56 Wins
9. Stanton 6 Titles 37 Wins
10. Glover 6 Titles 45 Wins

If it was Supercross only Reed (3 titles 55 wins) would be in the mix for top 5-6. If you throw in World MX then you need to get Everts, Decoster, Cairoli, Smets, Geobors, and Robert in there.
i think titles are the first factor when building a list.

Its like football. It doesnt matter how a QB does in the regular season. All that matters is the superbowl, which is why Brady can be considered the best QB. He has 5 superbowls over the course of over 16? years and he only missed the playoffs twice.

I would organize it just a bit different when combining mx and sx.

he is definitly one of the greatest, though he is lucky RV was injured as often as he was. had RV been healthier he wouldve been closer to RC's title count

Dungey will be forgotten shortly after retiring. He isn't flashy enough for an entertainment sport. He doesn't talk to the media. Sure he is consistent and wins titles but he is almost too perfect. Where's the storyline?

He has faced adversity during his rise. But he is too quiet for anyone to ever know. Helping build up KTM into the brand it is today. Battling RV, Reed, Roczen, Tomac, and many other fast guys and winning. Unfortunately, he always has an asterisks next to his name because of how smart he is. That is how you win. But it isn't as entertaining as Stew jumping over walls or launching walls.

What happened to being an ambassador to the sport? He doesn't do any media in or out of the sport. Of Roczen wouldn't have crashed we would have seen him on late night shows and all over espn.
This whole post is just absurdly stupid.

I honestly don't even know where to start to counter your points, so I won't............just, wow Pinch

Good point dirtnapper, go take a nap. If you have the energy please tell me where I was wrong.

I like Ryan Dungey but the guy is just as much of a snore as you apparently are.

I give him credit where it is due. He has beat all of the greats of his time: Villo, Reed, Roczen, Tomac

But he isn't flashy. Last year and a few times this year he did have some flare of absolute speed. He was able to crank up the speed when pressured.

Dungey could literally get more titles than RV, you can never rank him above, because RV took him to the cleaner every time, bar the once that RV broke his leg due to some concrete in a jump g-out.

Having said that, people bashing Dungey's speed is fucking ridiculous. He's consistently gone faster than everyone else bar RV and not crashed. Reedy, Stewart, Kenny, Eli, Trey, Barcia, Marvin... whoever. They might have beat him here and there, but if RV didn't win, RD did. No point being half a second a lap faster than Dungey if you can't make half the races.

All time discussions are harder, because comparing generations is hard... races, opportunities, competition etc... But Dungey beat all the above dudes, and pretty fucking easily really, will likely only be two of his titles will have come down to the last round.
I'm in agreement with you about people bashing Dungey's speed. Comparing guys across generations or across the pond is difficult.

His ability to maintain high speeds with relatively few mistakes (plus his humble attitude) are reasons why I became a fan of his. If he wins this Supercross series, while I would still rank him behind RV, he would have even more weight behind his name.

This says it all - great stats! No question Dungey is one of "the greats." To any one who thinks his consistency diminishes him, I'd also point out that consistency is part of racecraft, which he is extremely good at.

I'm not a Reed fan at all, but he earned my respect. However, while I'm not trying to bash the guy, the way I saw it was every time he actually ran their pace for an extended period of time, he wadded up. Dude was on it that year for sure, but he was never able to consistently run their pace in my eyes, and if Dungey doesn't run out of gas, doesn't matter if he crashed or not.

Yeah he had three big accidents, Millville, Dallas and San Diego. I'd say two of them are completely freak accidents that fall to the moto gods and the other is basically the same. He certainly wasn't pushing beyond his limit in Dallas, if anything he looked comfortable and RV didn't.

People always talk about Dungey's consistency. At the same point in their careers, Reedy's was better.

He was consistent for sure, but to call his crashes freak accidents is just being a fan boy in my opinion, especially when you say he was more consistent than Dungey. That guy has set the bar for that, beating Reeds own record for most straight podiums.

Statistically at the same point, age/races, Reed had a better podium percentage. Someone worked it out not long ago. Dungey last year just beat his record for consecutive podiums, by one or two...

Fanboy? If you think any of those three crashes was from over-riding, I don't know what to tell you. Front wheel hit a little kicker and washed on the face at millville...

Kenny moved over to avoid a lapper in San Diego, they're in whoops, no-where to go...

And was riding pretty easily behind RV in Dallas, got a little spin on the inside of the rut and lost a fraction of drive.

None of the three was he riding over his head, when does he ever look like he's riding over his head... just shit luck.
